New Benchmark for 2.0Follow

If you have 2 arms and 2 legs you can work and build a pc. Let's stop catering to systems from the year 2000 and build a quality looking game.

If they went with a stylized look like that of FF Tactics (ala WoW) they could have successfully done this. The look they're going for is going to require a high end machine to run on high settings. A dual core with a 9800gt will still run it though. I'm fairly sure it has been stated that the pictures we've seen were taken on this set up.

*edit: The current game doesn't lag on most PCs because of it's incredible graphics but because of it's horrendous engine. They really failed with it.

The engine is kind of crappy, so it's hard to reach max settings even with a good computer.

I built my system in 2011, with my own two hands, and it has a graphics card that is powerful enough to run the majority of games at high to very high graphics. But not FFXIV in its current form. I had to dummy down my graphics just a bit.

I think what we are saying is that a relatively new system with a new $75 video card ought to be able to play FFXIV on at least standard graphics. I shouldn't have to run out and spent $300 on a video card for one game.

This is a problem you'll always run into when you do any kind of gaming on a PC. What SE needs to do is make sure the game runs at about the same level of detail on the same systems as other comparable games. What really pissed people off when FFXIV was launched their system could run Crysis with max settings no problem but FFXIV run like crap. They need to make sure the new graphics engine is optimized as much as possible.

No matter what though, some graphics cards will not run at the level of detail you want or sometimes even at all. That's just the nature of PC gaming.

Even so, I think that this game should work on any computer, pre-built or built by yourself. I got this laptop and I bought it after checking if it could run Sims 3 and then this game, I finally got it to work even in Standard, Idk how but I can play it well and it runs amazingly. But I wish I didn't have to run around forums looking for a way to fix it, they should make the game for any computer.

Just thought I'd chime in on the engine crappy-ness discussion (of the current engine). Yes it looks great, the Shaders and geometry LOD is very nice. But the main reason it lags isn't because of the quality, it's because of one simple thing: No occlusion culling.

To explain, most logically made game engines, automatically do not process things behind walls. This means you don't waste time processing objects that are not even going to be visible on screen in that moment. This current engine does NOT do that, at all... I discovered this truth, to my confusion, while mining. Normally the game runs a little bit sluggish for me, so the mining circle would sometimes be choppy and slow to react. I found that if i turn my camera to overhead, facing the ground, performance became smooth as silk. This is because there is nothing to process below the ground, and you see the performance boost that would be there at all times if the engine was doing occlusion. Facing a wall will not help that way (unless that wall is at the edge of a zone) because even though you may just be staring at a simple wall, the game is processing the entire zone on the other side of it for no reason...

Long story short: This engine doesn't even clip out objects that are not currently visible. The most basic optimization technique, amazingly missing from this engine. Let's hope they at least have those basics in place for 2.0

The lower the requirements the more people they can attract.... no sense in having a pretty looking MMO(Like for the past 2 years) if everything else in the game is broken.....

I'm pretty sure you're the only one thinking that. In other words:

Making the game accessible to lower performance PCs != Lower the quality on high end machines. In fact, it should only improve the quality of the game on high end machines since the missing optimizations that need to be there for low end devices should allow good GPUs to push the boundaries even further.

Also, the more machines FFXIV can run on, the more players can actually play the game, and the better chance your expensive rig will actually be able to see FFXIV running because it hasn't shut down for lack of players. So, really, this is not a waste of time at all, but rather entirely in your best interest in every way.

Squeenix has stated that if you are able to play FFXIV 1.0 on 2.0 your machine will see an increase in performance, so if you are able to already play on max, on 2.0 you will play on max. They have optimized the engine for lower performance machines, so that they can also play the game.

Is a win win
