Gets better, but yes you need to enlist first.

The last fight so far has you going in a boss fight against a magitek machine. It's a level 50 fight and not soloable.

But you likely won't get that far in 10 days. To be fair though, the starter missions of any storyline won't have you do anything stand-out, you're not even a Private Third Class.
