Played FFXI years ago on ps2 and had planned on waiting for this game to come out for ps3... whenever. I'd given up MMO's after playing XI for 5 years but I've been thinking of taking up a new game or at least picking this up come whenever it hits the 2.0 version I'd heard about.
Back when this game came out I was running on a dinky laptop that never would have been able to run it but a while back I upgraded to a PC. Only problem is I never really designed the thing for gaming and at the most I've used it for playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas, nothing I believe is exactly system intensive, plus I really know next to nothing about PC specs or how things measure up.
I used a site that scans your PC against system requirements and it brought up red flags for my processor and video card It lists the recommended processor is an Intel Core i7 (2.66 GHz) or faster while I have an Intel Core i3 CPU 550 @ 3.20GHz and the recommended video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 with 768 MB VRAM or equivalent while I have a GeForce GT 430. I'm really not a hardware person so I have next to no idea what any of that means though.
Could anyone give me an idea of if/how well my system would play the game?
It's been a long time since I've been on this site so if there's somewhere better this question belongs please let me know.

That is the benchmark. In all honesty if you don't score above a 2500 i wouldn't recommend the game, no one likes playing a game in mass choppiness when the action is going down.
Keep in mind FFXIV is a newer game. A lot of people i have talked to complain because it requires high specs to play. Expecting a solid 2004 computer to run a 2012 game is just being naive.
I have not been playing long but i plan to play for quite some time as i really like the game, however I do work in the computer industry and know quite a bit about hardware. First off is you have a "GT" 430. There is a huge difference between nvidias GT and GTX series. Being that 14 is such a video card based game, that alone makes me not positive you can run the game at "very smooth" levels. Maybe if you bumped it down to 800x600 small resolution? dont expect to play a smooth game at 1920x1080 by any means.
All ways keep in mind, in general, mmo's take higher system requirements to play just because of the very high load put on your computer. Its one thing to play call of duty and walk down a hall where you computer has to process 2 to 3 people, and another thing walking in a city with hundreds of people all around you.
If you really have your heart set on a long term 14 career i would say make the decision, do you prefer PC games or would you prefer a PS3. Odds are you can get a ps3 for cheaper then it would cost you to bulk your PC up to very high standards. So yah i would keep that in mind if you are REALLY dead set on XIV, however if you are not positive i wouldn't jump the gun and go out and start doping stacks of money.

Phenom ii x4 975 (clocked to 4.2ghz)
Nvidia GTX 560 ti
8gigs of ram
high res: 3500
Low res: 4500

The Core i3 should be acceptable (I'm doing just fine on a lower processor, technically), but you probably need a video card upgrade. Your card is from 2010 and current sells for about $50. Good enough for a lot of games from the last few years, but not the latest and greatest by any stretch.
That said, my card is a Radeon 5670 from 2011, and once I turned down the graphics a notch or two I'm playing without too much judder.

Well damn, considering on the lower res benchmark I couldn't even hit 2000 I guess that should answer my question.

It is kind of early to start the ps3 vs pc debate, but in all honesty if they develope it right im sure the ps3 can handle XIV at very acceptable graphic levels and frame rates. Its a great piece of hardware. And yah im right there with you, i dont know enough about ps3 to say its equal to THIS video card, but regardless its a solid machine.
The fact is, when XI came out for ps2, it was fully comparable to pc in every way. Sure, as time went on, new hardware came out and people learned to tweak the graphic resolutions to bump quality, but strictly speaking on default stats the PS2 was badass. I played on ps2 till like 07 lol. So i really have a good feeling that XIV for the PS3 should be similar.
Keep your chin up, you all ready have a PS3 so things arent all bad... Imagine scoring that benchmark under 2k and NOT having a fall back lol then your XIV career would look dodgy.. If you plan to play the ps3, for sure keep an eye out for when the start the ps3 beta.
The only draw back with consoles, and this applys for all consoles, is you cant upgrade them. What you see is what you will get, where as in a few years, 2015 for example, the PC will eventually overshadow the ps3 as new hardware comes out and prices drop. But with that obviously comes like i said cheeper prices, then you can hop on the pc bandwagon at a fraction of what it costs now lol.
EDIT: Forgot to mention when i wrote "if they develope it right" what i meant by that is look at FFXI on the xbox360, its almost laggy-er then the ps2. Wasn't developed correctly. But considering it is 2012, technology is increasing, more importantly people know MUCH more about game design now they they did 6 years ago, i have a good feeling ps3 will be done 'correct'.

I'll put my hopes on their not cutting any corners on the ps3 version.

Delaying the ps3 release and then giving people a laggy port with noticeably worse graphics would be the worst thing they could do.
