Yes, for sure, but that's also a false binary.
after reading this:

What I meant is that our choice is not merely between over-the-top flashiness and stagnant re-colours - we could have, for example, a more tasteful mediation between the two, wherein a small pair of wings at the top of a bow makes an elegant difference between it and another piece. But this is really a very minor issue, and I fully understand that one could never really expect SE's aesthetic to differ from that which they have consistently shown us.

Items clipping through characters' bodies seems to be inevitable, even in what is arguably the fanciest-looking (and most carefully drawn) MMO out there, FFXIV. My level 1 alchemist, fresh out of the oven, had clipping issue with his standard gear.
You're mostly right, of course, that there are many variables to consider in an MMO and that conflicting models is bound to happen, but I still would have expected SE to watch out for the clipping plane when it involves unveiling their equipment for the first time. Of course, much of the problem is a result of weapons constantly attempting to outdo one another both in terms of size and effects. It's like SE doesn't think it's a good design unless it has a full-size twirling moogle on top of it, or a pair of wings larger than they foresaw any wand would be.
