I'm not to worried that the FFXIV trailer shows a lot of similarities to FFXI design. In fact I'm quite relieved! Since leaving I've been looking for a better version of FFXI so far, FFXIV quite rightly (and hardly surprisingly) has done this.
When I'm playing a new game, the first thing I notice is how the characters move. It takes a loving hand to animate well. To capture every single movement, no matter how small and make it look and feel like you're really running through a grassy feild. As dated as FFXI the movement in every action performed by the characters is fluid, graceful and convincing!
Each time my girl swung her weapon, I could almost feel the arc of the swing and the impact in the final thrust. Every spell was started with utter concentration and at the moment of release, I could see that in her body language. I felt every bump in the road when she rode her Chocobo and I smiled when she would /laugh.
They poured everything into those simple movements, they'd be mad not to use them again because for me they were perfect.
I've watched other toons. In LOTRO the running would be more convincing if their upper bodies moved with the motion. So far its just the arms, and the legs and don't get me started on the horses. For one their feet seem to close together the further towards the hoof you look. It's very basic, there is no sadle, no bridle and no personality. I can literally see the places frames have been skipped to perhaps... I dunno how it works but, save space? Maybe they just got board of animating it.
WAR to, while it's not as bad as LOTRO. When you turn while mounted, its literally like you're on a turn table. It seems the only motion the horse is capable of is running and the few idle stances thrown in for good measure. (Yes I am aware Chocobos done this to, but the convincing way in which they moved over all more than made up for it. The Chocobo's blinking was more convincing than some other MMO's actual movement.)
WAR have something good to work with but it seems to me (and my BF has said this, which I happen to agree with) is they've got one of the BEST fantasy universes right there to play with...and they're doing nothing with it at all. Almost every piece of story is tied up in the rather boring Public Quests which you grind over and over again for Influence to then purchase Equipment. There's no progression of story here at all, no sense that you're getting anywhere. I agree, its mad fun in RvR but a MMO, for me, needs a lot more than mindless killing and depending on the time of day sometimes you couldn't even do that. Depending on circumstances, people work or school, the game was dead. You could walk into a Battle Objective take it with no resistence. Boring.
I do like WAR and I hope they at least look at the PvE side and realise they have a whole world of things they can do with that. It's not been out long at all, its still a new-born in the life of MMO. I wish it well. But FFXI held me for three years, so far, its the only game in history that's been able to do that to me, which is why I'm so excited about FFXIV!
