I'm sure many others noticed that in an interview (i forget which) it was commented that seasonal changes were going to happen to the different areas of the game?
What do you guys think of that? I think it'd be pretty cool to see snow, and perhaps autumnal changes too? Perhaps seasonal changes to spawns of different mobs could be cool (mainly would be cosmetic, would suck if good drops were available 1/4 of the year).

That would be very cool. The one game I've seen this in is Saga of Ryzom, they had seasons and the weather would change depending. Also harvesting could depend on what season it was. Always wanted to see something like this in another game. Hope it's true. ^^
If its how I think it will be, it's gonna be pure awesome.
Snow covered areas in winter, dead trees in autum, flowers and stuff in summer etc.
It will definately make a welcome change from a completely random snow whether once a month in Batallia lol. Also, the weather forecast NPCs aren't used all that much, I think this would be a good place to expand on that system.
On the boat in the trailer, I'm guessing that was "rainy" weather which has obviously gotten a big rehaul, with intense lightning and rain. Compare this to other parts, it looks all summery and warm. I'm hoping this is the type of transitions we get.

This is something I would like. I'd also like to see all weather types in all areas, including cities. That's something I've wanted in FFXI for a long time, but I knew they wouldn't do it.
Seasonal changes could work based on game time. Taking a page out of FFXI, if a game day is 1 hour again, a month could be 30 hours. Every 90 hours could mark a change of season. So a game year would be close to 2 real weeks.
The seasons could affect weather, and maybe other things.
I like to see changes, instead of areas always looking the same. So if they add something like seasons, I'd probably like it.

Seasonal could also depend on region. It probably wouldn't snow in tropical regions (maybe monsoon? heheh). Harsh winters in the north? Certain mobs hibernate? Lakes freeze over? Who knows...

Little things like that make games feel more real like I'm in it almost as cheesy as that sounds. It'll be nice to see a change of weather throughout the game time not just when you zone into different areas. Wonder if there will be the zoning in XIV? Maybe I missed it in the article so forgive me if it is, but anyway back to that it'd be nice to see that transition as you move out of one area and into another along with seasonal weather.

oh man that would be so cool! i could imagine lakes/etc freezing over giving access to certain areas not accessible the rest of the time. could definitely be a pain in the butt, but also a unique aspect.
speaking of seasons, something i've always thought would be cool (and also annoying) for a game (but maybe not for xi/xiv) would be a relationship between equipment and weather. if you're in an arctic zone, coats/boots would provide higher defense/protection than something skimpier. the opposite goes for tropical locations. this could definitely be annoying in the fact that you'd have to own/carry a wider variety of armor, but would also be a little more realistic.

Honestly I am curious in the implementation of this concept. A slow and gradual change doesn't seem all that feasible. for some reason. And surely it wouldn't be an on-the-clock instant change, how would that look if you happened to be in the zone, rofl.

I think a gradual progression of seasons is certainly a feasible idea. In Final Fantasy XI, time moves differently, more quickly than in real life. We already have years in XI, as well as a week cycle with distinct elemental days. Adding seasons could certainly be done, and would add some exciting features to XIV. Seasons could adjust gradually depending on a set calendar. As a season draws to a close it could gradually phase into the next season in a period of 3 or 4 in game weeks.
