Hey all, Its only 1 day till the Head start release of Warhammer Online. God I thought this day would never get here!

With the last patch before release in I thought I would put down my Warhammer Online Review which I titled...

Warhammer Online: The Review "A Strong Game with Several Weaknesses"

I worked hard to make it fairly comprehensive and fun to read.

However I would really like your input. Aspects I overlooked, things you liked or didn't like. I don't mind if you post how much you hate the review, just be constructive as to how I can improve.

Thanks all!

Just a few points to note:

Your overview of the graphics options available is either outdated or your video card doesn't support much. I can play the game at 2500x1900 res, and there are about 30 available options there for me, not 6 as you wrote.

You also spoke a bit about population imbalance on the servers. Its interesting to note, that even though the general feeling was one of Destruction > Order on a large scale, on the server I've been on (Darklands), the population was about even whenever I was logging on. Also, I don't know if you checked the Realm War page and looked at the guild rankings, but the split for the top 10 guilds is 5/5, so Order is gaining xp and renown at the same rate Destruction is, something that wouldn't be happening if Destruction controlled everything.

Even on my server most of the teir 2 keeps were destruction controlled. There is a very good reason for this though. As you said, Destruction is the "it" side, and many of the players who hadn't seen the game until OB picked Destruction. As such, keep warfare was a big thing for them. I'd have to say my guild wasn't all that interested. We'd all seen it, and since in the OB owning the keeps meant nothing, we prefered to check out the changes to the game and play around on alt classes since we'll be sticking with the one class at release for a bit. Keeps will be much more contested at release.

You mentioned that all the characters look the same due to the fact that everyone is wearing renown gear, but my rank 20 Ironbreaker in the OB is ony wearing 2 items of renown gear. Everything else I've replaced with better stuff thats dropped off of PQ's, Influence rewards or random world loot drops. Also, I think your discounting the fact that there will be more gear options available in release than in the open (or even the closed) beta.

You wrote about bugs and pathing issues, and while you did mention that they wil be fixed, you failed to remind readers at that point that its still in beta. I'm not sure how many beta's your've been involved in but WAR is a pretty polished product atm compared to many other pre release MMO's. Its not perfect, but as you also mentioned Mythic are very proactive about fixing problems.

Overall I thought your review was well written, but you need to point out in several more places that at the time you wrote it the game was not released. Its far to easy reading through it to think that your commenting on the final product. You do mention patches and fixes alot, but you make it sound like it something their working on and you'll just have to put up with it. I'd be surprised if 1/2 the problems we saw in the OB are in the release version.

Hey Loarr,

Thanks for your input. I updated the Windows section noting your corrections. Thanks

As for player population: If I was a better man (and I am) I would bet 1 copper that Destruction easily outnumbers Order.

Your right that each of the recent patches has made drastic improvements in the game. I put that in, thanks

You spoke about several points that have been addressed this week.

Writing a review before a game comes out is extremely unprofessional. More than that - it's unfair. Beta is not there for you to review - it's a chance to help out with development while experiencing the game in the process.

I don't think you've seen much of the game ... You certainly haven't seen the game past rank 20. You haven't seen how everything comes together. The game hasn't even been released. There is still one more patch slated for pre-release and head start is tomorrow.

They have done an incredible job of listening to the community. They addressed a number of things at a rate unprecedented in MMO release history. There has basically been a significant patch every day during open beta.

In conclusion, while your review is well written and thought out, you failed to see the bigger picture. The general rule of MMO reviews is 72 hours - 72 hours played on one character is usually a strong enough impression, as it should ideally give you a good idea of the early- and mid-game. That's 50 hours POST-release, of course. Keep that in mind for your next piece.

Thanks Jord,

Althought I know the release is not slated until tomorrow. Unlike most reviews, I continuously update mine to change with each patch rather than "write it and forget it". Should anything change , the review is changed that day.

Any specifics you think I miss the mark on. I'd be happy to revisit.

Thanks

I agree with the previous posters. I think your review was well written except in some parts. Perhaps I am one of those people who are tired of hearing games paired with WoW (I know it has become the next medium in MMOs) but still WoW has its own world as WAR has done an amazing job in theirs.

The game itself is quite expansive. Me and my wife enjoyed just running around the various zones exploring what was laid out before us. You mention how the game didn't have anything eye popping or what not. I have to disagree. Walking into my first public quest and watching a huge hydra rush out to attack the masses of people was great!

As far as the RvR goes I find it very balanced. Sure, i've only done scenarios and the nordlands RvR lake area. I would sit there for hours going at it and watch as we would push destruction back to their hub, we would hold them there for a bit then all of a sudden they would rush back in and push us back. It is quite satisfying to be honest. Any other MMO I have played that was a rare thing to happen. If one side had control that typically was how it stayed till people abandoned the hope and moved on. I also find the abundance of options as far as Combat goes refreshing. Career tactics, Renown tactics, and Morale skills offered much to play with. As a Shadow Master I was able to help pick out those pesky classes that like to run in, do some damage, and run out. Heck, at one time I was even able to use my morale skill to knockback the enemy into the water to prevent their retreat.

As far as population goes I think it is way to early to even try and predict. AS with all new MMOs your gonna have a rush of people who "have to try it". After a month you will have those who can't break the addiction to the game they came from and will cancel their accounts. You will have those who review the game and break it to pieces and then those who swear the game is to die for. People will come and people will go. All the time I played I noticed a really good balance of the realms. I never had a problem getting into a scenario, I never thought that any open RVR was overpowered by one side having to many people. My one complaint if any on RvR is the fact some classes are a little unbalanced. Not enough for me to even really go into details though. I do believe the "Max population" buffer will curve some of the one side out numbers the other. Besides, most times I logged into my open beta I actually noticed Order was at a High or Full whole Destruction was only at mid or high.

In closing I believe mythic has a very good track record of how to make a great game. They proved themselves with DAoC. DAoC had three factions to pick from and until people left for EQ2 and WoW they was very balanced. I think with all that WAR offers from the endless unlocks of the Tome of Knowledge, the very detailed quests, to the extremely fun RvR, we have loads of years of fun ahead of us.
