Hey everyone. I just started playing DAOC and I was hoping to get a little direction in the game. I just spent the last five years or so playing World of Warcraft, so I came to DAOC a bit spoiled, as WoW players typical have levels, armor, and weapons handed to them pretty easily.
I started my DAOC character, ran around the little tutorial zone until about level 10, and then was tossed into the world with no clue or direction on what to do. I found a quest here or there which gave me some armor and exp, and I spent alot of time doing those dungeon assignments for the guards outside Howth. I spent quite a bit of time on this site trying to find guides on what I should do next but I really haven't found much as all the posts seem to be from pre-2005.
My problem is that I'm now level 30 and most of the quests now want to send me into RvR zones. However, most of my equipment is gray and I believe I would be absolutely destroyed out there. I talk to the "Channelers" and they offer to transport me to about 5 different places I have never heard of, and am hesitant to go to because I don't want to go to parts of the realm I have no business being in. If anyone could answer a few questions or could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Where does a level 30+ get armor from? None of the quests I receive at my level give me any armor, and the armor I am able to purchase from merchants in the capital city is blue to me.
Where should I be hunting/questing/leveling? I'm running around the same old area and am not sure where to go to next.
Thanks for your time everyone. I like playing the game for the most part, but I really don't want to get to level 50 wearing level 20 gear and embarass myself and my realm. Anyway, hope to see you all in game!

Welcome to the game,

It is kind of tough for new players to get the feel for the game, because there are not a lot of new players playing. the game is for Level 50's in New Frontier, and leveling up your first time can be kind of challenging with so few faces you see.

I would recommend trying to get aurulite. It is a form of cash that can buy armor/weapons in the Catacombs areas of the game. In hib, that area is the Shar Labyrinth. You ahve to run there the first time. The entrance to Catacombs is just outside the main castle in Tir Na Nog. It is a small rift you enter. There are dungeons there where you can enter and get aurulite, but probably the easiest way now is to go to battlegrounds. You can get quests to kill players or mobs to get aurulite as your reward, and they sell gear right there that is appropriate for you. The level 30-34 bg does not have a lot of people in it, but that is probably good for you if you are wearing grey gear. The level 35-39 is very popular, and although you might have trouble competing against tweaks that are permanent Molvik players, you can probably occasionally find a group and get some RP's as well as XP.

Finding a guild is very important. I no longer play any realm besides Albion, so I can't offer much help to a hib, but try to find a friendly guild, and they will be able to answer some questions, help you level, and give you some gear. You will probably have to stick with this game for 6 months or so before you are comfortable with it and healthily competitive. You can buy most higher level items with BP's (earned from fighting in New Frontiers), glass (a form of currency in Trials of Atlantis ares which can buy artifacts and Master Levels), and dragon scales, which you can kill mobs in Sheroee Hills to acquire. For now, just learning the basics is what your goal should be. Molvik might help you learn what is expected from a tank in a RvR experience. It is not New Frontiers, but it is similar because you will encounter other players.

Feel free to ask for more help. You can also ask a question in the /advice channel. You may get some smartass comments, but eventually someone will offer to help. Alb is probably the friendliest realm for new players. Midgard I have heard also has some helpful guilds (and both of these realms offer public battlegrounds to join at level 50 for all realm mates in New Frontiers). Hibernia is kind of a tough realm these days to get groups in. Finding a guild that does PvE and RvR will be key if you plan on staying there.

Thank you thuri for the post. I am in almost the exact boat as the OP. It's very difficult to find any good information or even recent posts, so much so that I dug up the password on this account that I haven't posted on since 2004 just to tell you thank you for the informative, mature post. Thanks!

I do want to add that I am playing Albion and everyone has indeed been kind to my very noobish questions in the /advice channel. Thanks again thuri.

No Problem Brayden. Glad it was helpful/informative.

this forum is not very popular for DAoC. Most people post on the VN boards. I think Allakhazam is more popular with WoW, and people used to posting for WoW come to DAoC and use it, but until this last post, it had been almost 4 weeks since the last post. About once a month is all you get here, and I try to reivew it every now and then to help people, b/c I know the people that do post here are new players, and I don't want them getting so frustrated they quit b/c the game needs new people to keep up with players leaving to other games/real life.

The game can be fun for a new player in a month or so after starting, but you have to get to 50, which if you are willing to pay someone, takes a few hours, but if you do it yourself, can take 50-75 hours, and those can be very boring.

Thuri,

Thanks a lot for your help. I have traveled to Shar Labyrith and started questing and getting new pieces of armor out there. Haven't yet gone to the battlegrounds yet, but the advice you gave me really helped me enjoy this game more. I look forward to leveling, grouping, and exploring some more once I feel my understanding of the game is a little better. Hope to see you all in game!

You are welcome Hikus.

This site is amazing for quests and for finding what mobs an item drop off of. But it does not offer much in the way of help guides or class specific questions. Try this link for Hibernia Melee. There are a lot of templates for Heroes.

http://vnboards.ign.com/hibernia_melee_professions/b20907/p1

Once you hit level 45, you should start to think about getting a decent template. That will include a mixture of player crafted armor, artifacts, and other drops that maximize your stats, resists, Hit points, and specializations. Again, this is where you are going to need someone in game to get help from. There is only so much I can type.

You can get artifact credit and the artifacts themselves by farming for glass in Trials of Atlantis areas. You can also buy Master Levels with this glass. Almost all mobs in ToA drop glass when you kill them. Some of the artifact mobs you can solo on a hero. here is a useful website for Trials of Atlantis areas and artifacts and such. The guide is out of date in that the description of what is needed to kill them is no longer valid. All artifact and master level encounters can certainly be killed with one mediocre group, and almost all by one or two people. But if you want to save money, you can farm scrolls yourself, and that is still up to date even though you probably have no idea what a scroll is, and perhaps not even what an artifact is : )
http://www.daoc-toa.net/

You can get dragonslayer weapons and gear from farming dragon scales in the Sheroee Hills area. There are mobs you can probably kill there at level 40.

You can buy both of these things off the housing merchants, but I'm not sure if you have any cash or not to do this. I suspect if leveling the first time, you are near broke.

Good luck, and keep chugging away. It will become much easier in a short while. We were all noobs once. Just now there are less noobs to run around with and find out things for yourself, and the world can look so lonely to a new player, but there are plenty of people still playing out to have fun.
