14 Day trial acct class question. +more!Follow

#1 Mar 16 2008 at 5:31 AM Rating: Decent
Hello all, I am trying to decide if I want to add another MMO to my monthly MMO bill and I came across DAoC. Smiley: grin

My question is... if I am planning on downloading the trial am I limited to what class/race I can choose for the trial?

And also... I need to be able to solo. I dont mind if it is a magic user or a tank/fighter or a hybrid, but I want to be able to solo effectively.

And does race matter?

I have zero interest in RvR or PvP... PvE is my style. It seems that I will be doing a Classic server.

If I dont like one class, and I want to try out another class can I just make a new character and try it out without deleting my other character? What if one class is Hibernia and the other is Midgard?

I have seen mention of the Shrouded Isle expansion having a graphic enhancer or something... is that on the trial?

What expansions are included on the trial?

Thanks for the replies, and if I have anymore questions later I'll ask.

Thanks again.

I am not 100% positive on how the trial works b/c I never did it..but regardless, I can tell you that up to Catacombs is for free. You will have to pay your monthly subscription price, but you won't have to buy any software to play the game.

I believe the trial is still in Shrouded Isles..after that, you would get Trials of Atlantis and Catacombs off the herald (EA Mythic website for DAoC). It will be a lengthly download for this and you will then have to patch up to the current game content which will also considerably take some time.

For straight PvE, pretty much any tank can be successful. I am assuming you will be only playing one account, so because buffs would be an issue, perhaps a heretic, friar, vamp, warden or heavy tank would be a good choice..the first four I listed are self-buffing classes, and can take a decent pounding.

Race does not matter much..your final stats in attributes you care about will be 330-400 when all is said and done at level 50 after buffs and items in template...the 20 or so difference in selecting a class makes a small difference, but if cosmetic is what you care about, then go for it..note that certain races are restricted from all classes, so you can only choose between races available for whatever class you want..the start-up screen helps a bit on this.

You can have a near infinite amount of characters without deleting. This will not be a problem for someone starting late. You can have 10 per realm/per server..now since there is a cluster of at least 3 servers everywhere you go (except Gaheris and Mordred), that means you can have at least 30/realm on any cluster..there are not even that many classes per realm.

Graphics will get much better once you download catacombs.

Now, that being said, this is a game that is primarily based on RvR. It does have a lot of PvE, but it is not done in large groups of people anymore..dragon raids, Master Levels, Epic dungeon raids would be fun for you, but they are usually done in specialize groups.

I would recommend Gaheris server for you..It is a Co-op server, so essentially, it is all PvE. There is no RvR..it is the only server that hibs/mids/albs do not fight each other..they fight mobs only and work together. I do not know how populated it is..I suspect not very, but if you know any friends, this might be the best place for you b/c I do not think you will enjoy the PvE in this game on a regular server just b/c you are starting so far behind and it is all you want to do..not just see it with an end goal of RvR.

The current trial includes the catacombs engine. Last time I checked it did not include the instances of catacombs. Very weird.

As Thuri said, the content is only up to Shrouded Isles...which is plenty for a 14 day glimpse of the game (except that you miss out on the instances that EVERYONE now uses for leveling...which is catacombs).

DAoC seems a weird choice for someone not interested in PvP at all, but I think that either the Co-op (severely underpopulated), or Classic servers would be best for this choice.

You can indeed make new chars, but not all on the same server in different realms (since they're competing) unless it's on the co-op server.

Good luck!

Classic servers are servers where it is kinda PvP/PvE, correct? Meaning PvP/RvR can only happen in certain areas and the other areas are PvE. Am I reading it right?

And you mention that I can have other characters but not different realms on the same server (Classic server), so could I have a Midgard character on Classic server and a Hibernia character on a Co-op server?

I want to do this mainly to get an idea of classes (which I want to play if I do subscribe), and an idea on how the different servers work.

From The Herald:

Cooperative Server
Cooperative servers step away from the traditional ruleset, in that you may play in all three realms on these servers in a cooperative fashion. The server is completely Player vs Environment (a.k.a. "PvE") with the exception of the dueling options.

- May not attack any player character.
- May play cooperatively with characters from any Realm.
- Characters may travel freely to all three realms.
- There is no RvR, only one-on-one dueling.
The current Cooperative server is Gaheris.

Classic Servers

Servers with the Classic flag set run under traditional server rules (see above); however, these servers cannot access the Trials of Atlantis expansion (Trials of Atlantis races are still available) and they have specific limitations on buffs. Players cannot be affected by beneficial buff spells unless grouped with the caster and are limited in range.
The following are our Classic servers:
Bossiney Cluster
Ector
Gareth
Lamorak

And yes, how you described the character creation for different servers is accurate! =)

No.

classic servers are almost exactly same as other "regular" servers.

Only Gaheris (PvE only, which sounds like it is for you) and Mordred (PvP..anyone can kill anyone) differ significantly.

Classic has 3 main differences from "ToA" regular servers.

**No buffbots..If you want buffs, you have to self-buff or have someone in group give them to you...also they have a range on them. People with only one account prefer this

**No artifacts or Master Levels..these are the primary aspects of Trials of Atlantis. Trials of Atlantis areas do not even exist.

**All players must start at level 1 and level..there is no /level 20 feature.

And actually, on Devon and Killbury anyway, you can now have characters on different realms of the SAME server. I'm not sure why they did it that way, but they have.

On classic, you can not, but there are 3 servers on classic...so you can have albs on gareth, mids on lamorak and hibs on ector..10 each, so you will not have a problem with running out of spots for toons.

I think that after 32+ characters, mostly on Albion, Merlin I am going to make a new one on the co-op server.

Most of my enjoyment has come from PVE...the Sidi raids that never happen anymore, Krondon raids...been 2 1/2 years since I have seen a raid there, Circle of Five in Brimstone is hardly ever done anymore and I am getting a little weary of going to lab to try to get an RVR group and waiting around to get a group.

I cannot solo very well with my main and am a good support person.

I know Albion like the back of my hand, so lets see what happens....the flip side is....going there after owning almost every artifact there is and all the master levels done and being like a land baron with 3 houses and plenty of money I will be going into a place pennieless, guildless and not knowing anyone.

Lets see what happens.

Good luck Steve

You can probably use a plat trade service to get some cash there if you have a lot on ToA server

Nobody really answered you question about the expansions. You can actually download those expansions FOR the 14 day trial up to and including Catacombs. Just go to the download section and select Catacombs and select the option for the 14 day trial upgrade basically and install from there. It's a good deal. I installed it.

Actually, I did answer that in the 2nd paragraph of my first response, but always glad to have some others help with answering the newer people's questions.

Perhaps you were more clear and that is appreciated.

To the original poster, let us know what you decided to do, if you tried the trial, and if so, are you planning on continuing it once the trial ends.

Will do. I am trying to figure out a way to get the trial and not miss playing it for as many days as I can after I download it.

I wish I had a vacation coming up but that is not til early May, so I am going to try to get the trial and actually put some quality time in on it within the next 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for all the help.

I believe if you buy the epic edition, which you can find on amazon.com, you get a free month's subscription, which more than pays for the price of the last two expansion packs IF you plan on getting them.

So, if you like the game in the first few days of the trial, then perhaps you can order the epic edition (this is a set of discs, which will save you a ton of download time). The epic edition only costs about $10 (plus shipping), whereas if you buy those last two expansions from inside the game, I believe it costs $30.

However, you do not need the last two expansions to play the game. They just add extra areas you will not be able to enter without them and more content that you may someday want/need (champion levels, mythirians, etc.), but that decision can come later.

I have a little question. As this game cought my eye and I found it in a shop nearby... My question is this... Is there a monthly fee after you purchase it or is it like "Guild Wars". As soon as you buy the CD you have unlimited access?
