EDIT: Because its not possible for me to keep the information up-to-date I advice you to check out the alla wikki on Chocobo raising here Here people can add the information they think is out of date or needs to be added. Thank you for all the help the last year!

On request by Pikko i moved this topic from quest and mission to here. If you want to see the tread where this used to be (to look at the replies), click here.

Ok i know its a bit early to start this seeing that everyone needs to start breeding before they can start Raising there Chocobo. But even the breeding could have effect on the abillities of the Chocobo. So i wanted to open a post where everyone can put there finding so we can start to make a guide to Chocobo raising.

2.0 About Care

Ok you got an egg. Now what?
You have to turn it in, in one of the 3 towns.

Chocobo raising NPCs -

Hantileon - Is at (I-11) in Southern San d'Oria. He's the San d'Orian Chocobo Raising NPC.

Pulonono - Is at (K-12) in Windurst Walls. She's the Windurstian Chocobo Raising NPC.

Zopago - Can be found at bastok chocobo stables. This is bastoks Raising NPC

Arvilauge - is at (I-11) in Southern San d'Oria. He gives all the information about Chocobo Raising you could possibly want. And which is why i've left this so bare because you can just get the information from him.

Kiria-Romaria - Is at (K-12) in Windurst Woods. He gives information on Chocobo Raising.

Gonija - At the Bastok stables explaining Chocobo Raising

2.1 The chocobo raising menu

The Chocobo Menu

Inside the Menu there are a few options.

Care for your Chocobo -
See more info in paragraph 2.1.1

Check my Chocobo -
Here you can hear about the status of your chocobo. (gender, attributes level, affection level, personality, weather preference and if it knows any abillities.

Care Schedule -
Here you can plan what type of care you want the NPC to use for your chocobo. See paragraph 2.1.2 for more info.

Give up Chocobo Raising -
This obviously discards the egg you're currently raising.

2.1.1 The "Care for your chocobo" menu

Types of care

Watch over the Chocobo Available from egg phase
Strengthens bonds of affection. Places very little stress on the chocobo.

Go on a walk Available from chick phase
Strengthens bonds of affection, but depletes stamina. The chocobo may meet someone on its travels!

Tell a Story Available from adolesense phase
Strengthens bonds of affection and trains mental faculties. Telling various stories may have a beneficial effect for the chocobo.

Scold the Chocobo Available from chick phase
Disciplines the chocobo. Slightly weakens bonds of affection. Will also wake up your chick when it goes in to "Chocoma" when choosing the rest plan.

Compete against others Available from adolesense phase (after CS)
Strengthens bonds of affection, but depletes stamina. Entertains a bored chocobo.

2.1.2 The "Care schedule"

Care plans

As the chocobo matures you will be able to select a care plan for your chocobo. Here you can boost his stats according to your plan. If we look at the attributes and you want your choco mainly for travel you want to boost his STR and Endurance. Perhaps in the future we will find out what will be the attributes used for digging, racing etc.

3.1 The egg fase

It will take 4 RL days to hatch an egg despite what kind of egg it is. All Chocobo's hatch Yellow. Im doing research about the skills of the chocobo's per egg.
While it is an egg the only thing you can do is care for your chocobo. This will raise your affection.

After your egg hatches your allowed to name your Chocobo. The names has a max. of 15 characters. You can pick your name out of a list with words. You can find the list Here. Or if you cant decide use Valadhurs Name generator

3.2 The "chick" Phase

Now that it is hatched its time to care for the little baby. You need to care for it, take it for walks and feed it. You can also set up a care plan.

3.2.1 Going for a walk (short)
Going for a walk will raise your affection level and make your "chick" stronger. But it will drain its energie/stamina. So you can only take him for so many walks a day.

When you take your chocobo for a walk you will meet the chocobo NPC with his chick (everytown has there own chocobo NPC with there chick).
We are still investigating how to get the Cut Scene with the NPC untill now it seems pretty random.

On the 3th meet you will get a key item: Chocobo story wich you can use later on.

  • San Doria: Story of an Impatient Chocobo.
  • Windurst: Story of a Young Chocobo.
  • Bastok: Story of an Worriesome Chocobo.

Asking the chocoboy about 'Tell a Story' gives you:
'You can tell a chocobo a story you know. This will foster the animals sensibilities. I've heard that by listening to a story, the chocobo might even realise it has powers it never noticed before.'
This makes me think it will raise its attributes or learns it an ability.

3.2.2 Feeding your chocobo

Checking on your Chocobo will tell you what the hunger level is for your chocobo.

The hunger levels are:

  • Level 1 - "Starving"
  • Level 2 - "Quite hungry"
  • Level 3 - "A little hungry"
  • Level 4 - "Neither hungry nor full"
  • Level 5 - "Neither hungry nor full" (no this is not a typo)
  • Level 6 - "Almost full"
  • Level 7 - "Quite full"
  • Level 8 - "Completely full"

To feed your chocobo you trade food to the chocobo NPC.

3.3 The adolecent phase
It takes 19 days to grow your egg into a young chocobo.

3.3.1 The colours in the adolecent phase
What Feielle found out by datamining is:

Once your choco gets to the adolecent fase, there are 4 colour combinations it can have:
Yellow with white tips
Yellow with Black tips
Yellow with purplish tips
Brown with Yellow tips.

Picture here

3.3.2 Tell a Story

Strengthens bonds of affection and trains mental faculties. Telling various stories may have a beneficial effect for the chocobo. You can tell general chitchat or tell one of the Key item: Stories. I believe telling the key item stories will unlock abbilities as described in paragraph 2.3.
We have three confirmations of getting an abillity while rieading the story its:
* Auto-Regen from the Happy story
* Gallop from the impatient story
* Burrow from the worriesome story
* Canter from the curious story
* Bore from the Young strory

3.3.3 Going for a walk (regular)

Regular walks go to the teleport zones. La theine/Konshot/Tahrongi. After getting a CS with 3 other chocobo raisers you will get the option Compete against others.

Also its possible to meet up with chocobo trainers for the 2 others towns and get their story (Impatient, young, worriesome)

3.3.4 Scold chocobo

All we know so far is: "Your chocobo hangs it head with shame"

3.3.5 Compete against others

When you select this you get a race in town. The facts say that this entertainms a bored chocobo. So when you get a message that your chocobo is bored I suggest this option.

After winning 3 races you will get a new story to tell your chocobo.

Winning the race seems random at the time.

3.4 The adult phase

After 29 days you will have an adult Chocobo. It is possible to get a coloured chocobo out the 1st generation eggs. Its still under investigation how to.

Fullgrown, you have 2 sizes: Large and Medium (the largest difference being the head sizes)

Large:
Yellow
Black
Purplish

Medium:
Black
Blue
Red
Green

Here some images thanks to Feielle

3.4.1 Obtaining the Chocobo whistle

To obtain your chocobo whistle follow this small guide.

3.4.2 Going for a walk (long)

Long walks go one zone further than the teleport zone. You have a chance to meet up with Dietmund and Brutus (Both speculated to give you the last 2 stories).
Confirmed: Brutus will give you the Curious story, you can meet the NPC breeder from the final town here too.

3.4.3 Registering your Chocobo for riding it

In the root of the Chocobo menu you can register your chocobo to the whistle

4.0 Breeding

I want to know alot more about breeding before putting up the info. Its kind of complicated with the generic code. Altho i will put up the how to soon.

Summary Notation of Findings and Claims In The Thread By Category By Risae

Food
  • 1. indyracing's Chocobo drops a level of Endurance after eating a Carrot Paste.
  • 2. Strangeone notes that feeding Chocobos different foods results in different amounts of energy the next day.
  • 3. indyracing later confirms that the Endurance drops was most likely not due to the paste, and shows that Carrot Paste raises Endurance.
  • 4. Valiere gets Patient Personality using Vomp Carrots.
  • 5. Gatero gets Enigmatic Personality using Zegham Carrots.
  • 6. bertieem gets Ill Tempered Personality using San d'Orian Carrots.
  • 7. Hitorisan gets a change in personality from Patient to Ill-Tempered after a steady diet of San d'Orian Carrots, then one day of just Gysahl Greens. Also reported that the chocobo had less energy on the day after the 3 greens.
  • 8. Mistre reports a drop in DSC after feeding a Vomp Carrot.
  • 9. Kriptex notes that a Carrot Paste drops RCP, and caused a loss of Enigmatic Personality (enough of a drop to cause Receptivity to drop below Endurance?). A Zegham Carrot (plus a day of listening to Music) restored the Receptivity.
  • 10. CrazedZifnab notes that Sharug does not raise affection as much for him anyway. (Note that there hasn't been any true evidence that they give more affection, just a lot of times it seems that way)
  • 11. Risae notes that three Vegetable Paste raise her chocobo's affection by two levels almost exactly.
  • 12. Risae notes that seven Sharug Greens will not raise an entire affection level from the bottom.

Eggs/Breeding
  • 1. Likeduh reports getting a Somewhat Warm egg from breeding a chocobo with relatively low stats to a chocobo with all Poor stats.
  • 2. Mozyr reports getting a Bit Warm egg using the Sports Plan
  • 3. Rotd reports getting a Somewhat Warm egg using the Jeuno Tour plan
  • 4. Ryslil reports getting a Little Warm egg using the Sports Plan
  • 5. Mystyt reports getting a Blue chocobo from the breeding of a Black and Yellow on the Sports Plan
  • 6. Tsuuga reports getting a hatchling that came with Burrow ability from parents of Poor, Poor, First Class, Deficient +Burrow +Canter (Mother) and Poor, Poor, Average, Substandard (Father) from a Hiking Plan.
  • 7. The One and Only Poodlehat reports getting a Faintly Warm egg from the Gourmet Plan with Yellow First Class Discernment +Burrow +Bore and a Blue of unknown stats.
  • 8. KadenOfKujata reports getting two Green Chocobos from the mating of two first generation Yellow chocobos (both Physical stats)

Care Plans
  • 1. Luinealcarien notes a raise in STR after a day of Exercising Alone with an Ill-Tempered chocobo
  • 2. Wolfaura notes a loss of Patient Personality after a day of Listening to Music whereas normal activity was walking around town.
  • 3. Strangeone reports a raise in DSC after a few days of Interacting with Children and Z. Carrots (no mention of personality)
  • 4. Captzee reports a rise in Endurance after the Day 64 message.
  • 5. Nezzi reports a rise in Discernment after the Day 64 message.
  • 6. Risae notes that since a certain Enigmatic chocobo's STR became equal to its RCP, STR has not managed to rise again, nor has RCP dropped.
  • 7. Risae reports a chocobo rising a full level of STR in only 3 days of Carrying Packages
  • 8. Vidien reports a chocobo that has First Class in STR and END on day 50.

Energy/Affection
  • 1. pdragonfly reports Chocobo got two more watch overs than usual, even though affection dropped, and diet did not change, implying that affection does not 'give' energy.
  • 2. Kirol notes a Slightly Warm egg and mentions having 3 Walks and 3 Watch overs, but doesn't mention if any energy is left after that.
  • 3. Tinuvael reports Chocobo being Perky yet at Wants To Be With all the time and hadn't been fed the previous day.
  • 4. Risae notes being able to get 31 Watch Overs on a newly hatched Chocobo.
  • 5. Risae notes being able to get 3 Short Walks but 8 Watch Overs, which she calls an anomaly.
  • 6. Cairstonia notes having one Chocobo that only gets one Watch Over after his three walks, and at another point manages 3 of these.
  • 7. Hepzibah reports Chocobo getting varying amounts of Watch Over (3 mostly, sometimes 8) after three walks, with no change in diet or care plan, and varying statuses.
  • 8. Shadowsfell reports that both chocobos being raised with Basic Care alone, only normally get 24 Watch Overs.
  • 9. Risae notes that it takes more than 20 Watch Overs to replace the affection lost by Delivering Messages when the Chocobo gets lost.

Abilities
  • 1. LeinadiOdin's Chocobo learns Auto Regen with 'A bit deficient' Discernment, whilst Perky.
  • 2. SinToMental's chocobo learns Gallop with 'A bit deficient' Discernment. No mention of Perkiness.
  • 3. Laxedrane's Chocobo learns Gallop whilst lovesick.

Weather Preference
  • 1. KhaineSylph reports that digging under the chocobo's disliked weather results in nearly nothing, as well as saying that a huge difference in digging ability is apparent at Outstanding Discernment

Datamining
  • 1. Tinuvael's Datamining shows that all stats go from 0-255 and speculates that HP is not always 255 but increases toward it as chocobo grows.
  • 2. Tinuvael's Datamining shows that it is likely that chocobos have 3 gene 'slots' for color.
  • 3. Based on that, Nezzi notes that two Black chocobos may have a Yellow child from a BBy x BBy mating, but if one parent passes on two genes and the other passes on one, it may not be so, since one could only really get Byy at 'worst'

Risae has updated her theoretical Care Plan stat table.

Risae wrote:

Using the newer 0-255 numerical structure, I yet again revamp my stat table.
I'm still not sure about how many levels of affection are effective in
'allowing' stats to go up, but for now I am still assuming that the top 4 or
5 work. However, for simplicity reasons, I have changed the gains to reflect
what happens when one is at max affection. Just note that if your affection
is less than 'Regards as Parent' it is pretty sure that you are not getting
the full boost from the care plan.

Assume that chocobos gain a new stat level when they reach 32, 64, 96, and
so on up to 255.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The numbers given here are only for reference and experimentation.
They are not guaranteed and in some cases are strongly speculation. We still
need more data to make concrete assertions

STR = Strength
VIT = Endurance
INT = Discernment
MND = Receptivity
AFF = Affection
ENG = Energy

Due to the most recent findings, I am also speculating that boosts are not
done in this static way at all, but are actually calculated by the following
process or something similar:

1. The Chocobo's total HP at the start of the day is reduced by a percentage
according to the care plan.
2. The HP reduced, for example 25% in the case of Delivering Messages, is
then multiplied by the Affection level (as some percentage form) and then by
the Personality Modifier if there is one for the Stat.
3. This number is then divided by some value, probably corresponding to
which stage of development the chocobo is in.
4. The final result is added onto the value of the stat.
5. (Strong Speculation) The final result is negated IF it would cause the
Stat that opposes the Personality Stat to drop below the stat in question,
and no change occurs.

Even considering this, the above table is still most likely as reliable as I
can manage, for the most part, if your Chocobo has 'standard' HP and high
Affection. Add a few points for Personality Bonus.

I took some intresting things out of my day 11 report:
Day 11 report wrote:

Your chocobo seems quite perky lately. It should be responsive to anything you give it now.

Your chocobo has been receiving plenty of affection, and seems extremely happy. It is in excellent condition now!
It does not have much of a personality, making it easy to care for.
Your chocobo does not seem to mind any kind of weather, but usually animals have a preference.
Last of all, your animal does not seem to know any abillities.

Perky isnt a personality its a thing the NPC says about it. I think its a trigger to give it something... but what?

The White Handkerchief doesnt require you to be on a choco to get the smell(since what youre after is to get YOUR smell on it); i left my char afk in sandy for a couple of hours, zoned and the NPC took it back.

As for the Perky mood, it'll get that every now and then if you always keeps his affection high; when it is perky it'll have a bigger reaction on the actions taken on him. Like this: Giving him a Ghisal Green adds up, say, 2 points of happyness(since he eats it contently, i assume Veggy paste adds 1 cause he simply "eats it"), when he is Perky, the Greens might add around 3 or 4. Same goes if you make him do something it doesnt like during that period; it'll suffer a bigger loss in affection than it would if he was normal.

If anyone remembers EXACTLY what they did to get the dirty hankerchief please post... ive only seen one post about it and that person rode the rented choco till it bucked him, but i did that twice and nothing... need specifics.

eg. Where did you ride it to? Did it say the hankerchief changed to dirty as soon as you got kicked off or when you zoned somewhere? How long did you wait before taking the ride? Stuff like that ^^

Thanks

It never changes to dirty. Still smelled like soap when I handed it back and it worked just fine. All I did was wait a vandiel day, zone, come back and talk to the chocobo breeder.

I like this thread.

My chocobo, so far, has no personality. But she is, LITERALLY depressed every other day. Yesterday she was depressed, the day before she was extremely perky. The day before that, she was depressed. The day before that she was "passing time here in the stables without a care."

I'm not sure why. I feed her a green, a paste, and a carrot everyday. This usually gets her to "almost full". I take her for about 2-3 walks. I've turned in the handkerchief. I didn't get it dirty though, I don't think. She regards me as a parent, and I have kept her on a walk, music, basic care plan. :P
When she isn't depressed, and I examine her, I usually get the message "Your chocobo looks very happy to see you."

I haven't put her on rest because of that chocobo death bug or whatever it is, lol.

Since the old thread was unstickied:

I have a feeling the Parasite worm is causing sickness in my poor little PrinceZippy ><

I was lucky enough to grow some of these, and decided to feed them to my chocobo.

The day I fed him one of these the first he was fine, but the next he was sick, so I feed him the toko. grass. Not thinking anything of it, I fed him another parasite worm too. The day before he gobbled it up, so I figured it must be something he liked.

The next day I logged in again and the same thing. So again I gave him the toko grass and worm >< Well one more day and the same pattern, including what I fed. That was today.

But then it hit me just now (duh ><,) I bet it's that worm! He's been sick for 3 days straight. Needless to say tonight when my next day begins, I'll give him carrots...

Anyone else have this happen?

I posted it already on the other Thread but since it's unsticked now i'll post it here again:

I don't know if anyone noticed this so far. Since i havn't heard or read of it i don't think anyone did...

Yesterday was day 13. for me and my lil AutmnFairy. She was perky and in high spirits. The trainer said to me: "It should be reponsive to anything you give it now." So i thought she ment something like food. So i gave her a carrot paste but she ate it normaly like she did all the days before. I took some walks, got my chocobo story (finaly) and took care of her. Then i left.

Today, 10 minutes before my 14. day, i decided to check on my care plan setup. Because i wan't to avoid basic care right now and want her to listen to music to increase her discernment and receptivity. When i clicked in my first care plan, the plan that will kick in on day 14, guess what i had? The whole list of care plan! Dig for treasure, act in group play, play with children, just everything! I was about to select "dig for treasure" (since i want a chocobo who's good in digging) but then i got the status report for day 14 automatically. The VCS trainer said that my chocobo has calmed down. When the CS was over and i switched back to the care plan menu... all the new plans were gone! *crys* ;_; And because i didn't selected one before the new day it's now on basic care...

I hope she'll be in high spirits again soon! And if someone is lucky enough to have a chocobo in high spirits right now please check if you have any new plans and change them before it's to late!

Day 14 btw... no growth update... still a lil yellow chick...

That's very odd Andra! Cool info.

My chocobo is in high spirits, but those options don't show up for me, hm. :3 Do you think it could've been a bug? Don't wanna be a pessimist, but you never know. XD Think it'd be kinda weird if you could get your little chick to do all that stuff, but obviously I don't know. :o
Be on the lookout! XD

Nothing new for me on day 14.

Our Chocobos will probably mature any day now, be sure to enjoy your cute little chick while it lasts. ;-;

Thats awsome; you have new care plan options!

I believe it will happen to us all soon, maybe its influenced by the chocobos affection/stats? Either way, it is true, any day now our babys should reace the teenage years...

Damn ;_; they grow up so fast sob...sob...

Well, like i said, after the CS with the new day report and after my chocobo calmed down the new plans were gone... that's really odd... i thought it might has something to do with the high spirit status... strange... damn, i should have made a screenshot... but i was so excited and the CS poped up while i was still switching to the different plans.

By the way: After looking to the care plans picture i thought you have to pay gil for the better plans like carrying packages and so on. But instead you'll get gil. I selected "Exhibiting to the public" short and the VCS trainer said to me that because i'll lend my chocobo for that service i'll get some gil in return. After that i was about to select "Dig for treasure" and then the CS poped up... *crys*

I really want to know now what it triggers... maybe the right feeding? Today my chocobo was starving. Must have been used up all of her energy because she was in high spirits. On day 12 i only gave her one carrot paste and then she was full. On day 13. she was in high spirits and i again gave her only one carrot paste, i don't want to overfeed her. Some ppl said that you should first feed a vegetable paste because it dosn't makes full, and then a carrot paste after. Maybe that's already to much, even if the chocobo just eats it happily.

I think there are still many mysterys we have to solve... from now on i'll check my plans every day!

After i now read that it has nothing to do with the high spirit status i'm really angry that i wasn't able to select a plan in time... on the other side you might be right... maybe it was just a bug...because i don't know if it's really good for lil chicks to do hard work like dig for treasure. o_o;

Edit: Ah, i forgot to mention something. While i browsed through the list of plans till the bottom of the list i noticed many --- Just empty list options only marked with 3 --- Don't know what that could mean... maybe it has something to do with the abilitys a chocobo can learn? Maybe special plans to improve the special skills of a chocobo? Well, i think we just have to wait and watch it carefully.

My chocobo was in high spirits yesterday, and I had to set up my care plans (I had just finished my previous cycle with them), and I didn't see any of those. :( Maybe it had more to do with what you were feeding it? I'm not sure. Mine was in high spirits and I fed it a vegetable past and then a carrot paste, then took it on 2 walks and watched over it. /shrug

That's cool though, about getting those ^^

Reguarding Affection Levels, I had breifly "Your chocobo seems to want to be with you all the time"

It was just after his 4 day sleeping stint (stupid bug) and he woke up sick. So I'm not sure if it was because of the sickness that I got that or what. Haven't gotten it again.

Important NPCs -

Hantileon - Is at (I-11) in Southern San d'Oria. He's the San d'Orian Chocobo Raising NPC.

Pulonono - Is at (K-12) in Windurst Walls. She's the Windurstian Chocobo Raising NPC.

Zopago - Can be found at bastok chocobo stables. This is bastoks Raising NPC

Arvilauge - is at (I-11) in Southern San d'Oria. He gives all the information about Chocobo Raising you could possibly want. And which is why i've left this so bare because you can just get the information from him.

Kiria-Romaria - Is at (K-12) in Windurst Walls. He gives information on Chocobo Raising.

Gonija - At the Bastok stables explaining Chocobo Raising

There is a little typo here that i know of. The Raiser and the information NPC and in Windurst WOODS.

I believe that the chick wanting to be with you all the time is probably the second level of affection. When my chick hatched, it's affection was "It seems to like you pretty well", which later changed to "It seems to want to be with you all the time", to where it is now "It seems to regard you as it's parent".

Anyone have an opinion on whether the chicks who got the rest bug are 4 days behind?
#21 Sep 04 2006 at 9:02 PM Rating: Decent
I just found out an interesting bit of information. I had "perky" once but it downgraded to "parent" for 4 days. "Perky" returned after I spread out my chocobo care over 3 vanadiel days. Try spreading out the affection over several vanadiel days and see if you guys also experience better affinity. This would be analogous to NPC affection getting a single affinity boost for multiple visits.

Another note: My chocobo is ill, I fed it the recommended wildgrass and got the "hope it gets better" message. I also fed it a carrot, which had no message. Lastly I fed it a Gysahl Green, which gave me the message. Gysahl Greens apparently have healing properties.

Hmm why is the quest such a big deal?

The egg you get is just like one of the eggs you can buy

And the eggs dont cost much at all

Do people think the egg you get from the quest has special/hidden properties?

For me, it changed from "it seems to like you pretty well" to "it seems to like yo a lot." Then it changed to "it seems to want to be with you all the time." Now "it seems to regard you as a parent." There might've been one before "it seems to like you pretty well." Possibly "it seems to like you."

My guy isn't sick anymore, but I seem to have a new personality:

"It seems to have a rather enigmatic personality, making it difficult to know what the animal is thinking."

He is in high spirits today as well, but nothing different for the care plans.

Status Report!
<MagicVive> Day 13
Male
Strength: Poor
Endurance: Poor
Discernment: Poor
Receptivity: Poor
It seems to want to be with me all the time.
Seems to be starving (Can't do anything about it >.<)
He's Sleeping soundly in order to heal its fatigue.
Doesn't have a personality making it easy to care for.
Doesn't mind any type of weather.
And doesn't know any abilities.

It's been in "Chocoma" [Lightgoldenrodyellow]for about 2 days now. Energy is 0 and it just sleeps. I've heard that setting plan 0 to rest and plan 1 to basic care is the remedy for this bug.

So far I've gotten the Story of the Impatient Chocobo, and I've handed in the white handkerchief, heard rumors of a dirty handkerchief you can get...
mainly been feeding him the cheap stuff, San D'Orian Carrots, Gysahl Greens, and Vegetable Paste.

I'll update this post

When it says:
Quote:

The new plans are gone.
