Returning player unsure what to playFollow

#1 Nov 27 2018 at 8:22 AM Rating: Decent
Hey, I'm returning after over 10 years, was looking forward to leveling dark, dragoon, monk. Which I'll level for fun as it seems there not really viable endgame. Any advice on what to play for endgame content without gimping myself or not waiting hours for groups?

Blu, smn, cor, geo are what I see people are looking for mostly

Thanks

Endgame is mostly done with ls groups instead of shout groups depending on the server, DRK is fine for a DD but would require RMEA weapons in order to be competitive with already established DDs in a group. Having other roles, like whm, blm or sch, or support like brd and geo would help a group more and be flexiable.

Would smn be good option? And is it possible to unlock all summons quite easily now?

SMN is a fine option if you are willing to gear (including Nirvana) and get job points. Unlocking all avatars would be easy at 99 (item level 119) as all fights and missions would be quick fights.

There is much better balance to jobs than there was 10 years ago, and a well geared drk, drg or mnk can be a great DD, but it means being very well geared. Blu is also a great DD, but as with any DD, will only truly shine when equipped with top line gear.

Smn can be incredibly powerful, and with a mythic weapon (Nirvana) can be the closets thing to an "easy button" the game offers. But finishing a mythic weapon takes some work.

If you want a slightly quicker path to getting involved in some groups while building up your other jobs, support jobs will generally get you to a viable state a bit quicker. Cor, geo, sch and whm are probably the paths of least resistance there.

You will find that the game is much more casual friendly and much less job specific than it used to be (although there still are, and will always be content driven niches) so there is much more opportunity to explore the jobs that you are interested in. That said, it is normally desirable to have jobs that fill a mix of roles; everyone wants to be DD, so having a tank, support and/or healer will help fill out your capabilities.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm looking at drk, bst or blu at the mo. Was debating sch but don't like healing lol.

Cor is an option but again not sure if I'd enjoy it

Any advice on them 5 jobs would be great

Thanks

Sch isn't about healing, although Regen V and Embrava have their niche uses. They perform skillchains with spells using stratagems, in which magic bursting groups is possible with blm's tier5 spells and death.

Cor isn't about just roll buffs, they are expected to DD, i.e use wildfire/leaden and savage blade. The downside is alot of gearing, having ranged sets, melee sets, roll set, etc. It can be fun, if you are up to it.

Bst is generally not used in groups, but their pets can perform skillchains, the distance nerf really hindered the job.

BLU is popular because of their spells and traits, being able to self heal, self cap magic haste, nuke with added effects (gravity, defense down, etc), unlimited mp with their mythic Tizona.

DRK has the most attack, greatsword is more popular than scythe due to resolution being pure STR mod. You would want ragnarok (relic) or calaboldg (empyrean).

A little more about sch: it has the ability to, as Szabo noted, to create skillchains purely off of spells. This means that a sch can make SCs, and blms (and the sch) can nuke for a manaburst all without requiring melee to be involved. For some content that has particularly brutal aoe or aura, this is great, because it means only the tank is close to the mob. Sch also had a period where it was (ab)used for its ability to rapidly stun. That isn't as common anymore, as a lot of newer content is immune to stun, but it was a thing for a while. If you're worried about getting stuck healing on sch... well, I often joke that I never did the quest to unlock light arts for my sch.

Blu and drk can be great DDs, and a lot of fun to play, but understand that there will be a large time investment getting them geared up. In contrast, sch and cor can perform some basic functions with moderate gear and, in the case of sch, 550 JP. This isn't to say that they don't benefit from good gear--a well geared cor, for example, can be an incredible DD--but they do have a slightly lower bar for being able to contribute to a group.
