Weird stuttering issue with my gameFollow

#1 Sep 15 2015 at 1:45 PM Rating: Decent
So I last played this game about 5 months ago and decided to take a break. I felt like playing again recently so I reinstalled the game and everything except for some reason the game now stutters every couple of seconds. I'm not really sure why it's doing this, the last time I played this I didn't have any issues at all. I've tried different things like rolling my graphics drivers back to the ones I used when I last played it and messing with different graphics settings and none of that has helped. I haven't really made any changes to my computer since then either so I'm not sure why it's doing this. I notice when it stutters the music is fine but the game itself stutters. Does anyone know what could be going on?

Windows 7 64 bit
AMD A8-3800 APU 2.4 GHz
Nvidia GTX 560 Ti

Also this is the only game I have that's doing this, everything else is fine.

I have had this issue when I played on a laptop. It however would come and go.
Is it in every zone?

Try disabling your virus scanner while playing, presuming you run one.

Yeah, it does this in every zone. It starts doing it as soon as the game boots up. And I tried disabling my virus scanner but that didn't do anything, it's still stuttering.

Hmm, make sure you have DirectX 8 installed. Also make sure you don't have things like Shadowplay enabled since you mentioned Nvidia.

I have Direct X 11 on my computer, is it possible to downgrade back to 8?

I don't think it's so much of a downgrade as it is just adding to the library your card can pull from for rendering rules. Someone more technically minded will probably bite my head off for implying such, though. Anyway, you might have to pick the executable up from a third party site nowadays, so just use caution.

Well I found a DirectX 8 installation and installed it but I'm still getting the stutters. So I guess that isn't what's causing it. Shadowplay isn't enabled either.

Kind of running out of general ideas. You got the Win7 version of POL, correct? Try tinkering with the sound channels option in the game config, too. I also hope you aren't running their version of windowed mode (or worse, have it set while running the third-party version).

I have the Windows 7 POL and my game isn't in windowed mode. I did find something else out though. I ran the benchmark and it runs perfectly fine with no stutters or anything. So maybe it isn't something with my graphics setup. Any other ideas on what could be doing that?

Possibly some corrupted files. Run a file check from the very first POL screen before logging in and see if that helps. Dreadful as it sounds, a full reinstall may also be required. When you left, did you uninstall the game?

I did a full reinstall a couple of days ago when I noticed the problem and that didn't fix it. I'll try checking the files and see if that turns up anything though.

Is there a particular reason that the built-in windowed mode is bad? (I just started playing again after years off and have had no issues w/ their windowed mode).

Does the stuttering occur in regular full screen mode (without windower)?

Is your monitor plugged into the APU out instead of the GFX card out? (doubt it, but like someone said running low on ideas)

Is there any difference if you right click on the executable and "run as administrator"?

Are you trying to run in compatibility mode (you shouldn't have to).

Mainly just worse performance and a seeming washing out of the graphics. But such may be build-specific issues.

Checking the files didn't turn anything up unfortunately. The stuttering happens regardless whether or not I'm using Windower. I'm pretty sure my monitor is plugged into the correct place, it's never given me any issues like this before. I've tried running it as administrator and that didn't do anything. And I'm not running it in compatibility mode either.

At this point I think I'm just about ready to give up on this. I've tried literally everything I've seen online that's supposed to fix this but nothing works. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my computer or the game so it doing this doesn't make any sense. I really appreciate you guys trying to help but this is just driving me crazy.

I had a similar problem on an older computer, particularly in cities and old dynamis, but to some degree, everywhere. When I checked my config, I had just about everything maxed out. I hate to ask, since it looks like your machine should be fine, but have you tried turning down some of the graphics settings? You can access some settings in-game through the menu, and some additional ones in the FFXICONFIG application. Maybe try turning down some effects and render settings, and see if that helps?

Yeah, I've tried turning all my settings down but not much luck with that.

Ok, so I don't know if it's entirely kosher to talk about but I tried playing on a private server to see how it ran there. When I logged onto the server it ran fine with no stutters at all. So I only get this problem when logging onto Square's servers. Does that help narrow anything down?
#20 Sep 20 2015 at 3:54 PM Rating: Decent
I've also noticed that my FPS doesn't go above 26 on Square's servers but when I tried on that private server I was getting a consistent 29.8 fps. Could something on my computer be interfering with the connection or something?

Private servers tend to bypass POL and its functionality which could understandably contribute to some kind of performance issue. Try running a file check on POL itself if you haven't already. Could also try reinstalling that from a fresh download just in case your initial one corrupted somewhere.

In the past, I've heard of some virus scanners treating POL as a form of virus/trojan, which could be contributing to lag with key files getting isolated. However, if you had your stuff disabled as I'd earlier suggested, that's probably not the issue itself. A less helpful possibility is that your ISP is somehow messing with the packets going between you and the SE servers. I don't know their IP offhand so you could try a tracert to see if the packet ping is unusually high, but if you haven't already, I would strongly suggest trying to go through official support channels on the forum if this is the actual culprit.

Well using tracert the packet ping with the Square server is 198ms. I guess that's higher than it's supposed to be?

Eh, I'd say that'd qualify as "green" for most other games. I'd be more worried if it was consistently over 400ms. But I also don't know what server you pinged specifically. Something like squareenix.com isn't the same as the XI farm.

Do you have multiple characters, by chance? Would be good to know if the problem persists across multiple characters. I guess in another attempt to try and troubleshoot, have you tweaked aspect ratios within game (most importantly to match selected resolution). Your video card will also have a helper program call Nvidia Control Panels that allows you to set things globally and per-program, particularly in Manage 3D Settings. Looking at mine, there's a section for "All Playonline Games" which probably winds up including XI. For experimental purposes, tweak everything to let the app handle whatever setting it asks for.

A while back FFXI had a problem with Zone Alarm (or AV using the same engine such as CA). The sound files for Ru Aun Garden or Arrapago Reef would hang the game. Turning off sound or using a different AV fixed the problem. That has not been a problem for a long while though.

I do have another character, I logged onto the one I used the last time I played when I didn't have any issues and it's stuttering now too. It's also on a different server. I'm currently on Asura and my old one was on Odin. I tweaked everything like you said in the Nvidia control panel but that didn't seem to do anything.

I had this issue a while back I think. Run run run skip almost predictable?

If that is the issue here is how I "fixed" mine (and I don't know why it works)

1) Change the setting of your UAC/Compatability (if its set to Run as admin, disable that.)
2) Run a File Purge on your Temp Folders/cache (a program like CCleaner)
3) Change the setting of your UAC/Compatability back to what it was before.
4) Run the game.
5) Exit the game.
6) Run CCleaner Again(or similar program)
7) Done

Now I have no idea why this worked for me, it is stupid but if it is the same skip as I kind of described (it sounds like it) it should clear it out.

From time to time I will have to run CCleaner (or alternative) because the stutter comes back, I think perhaps its calling some cache file that is being "skipped" or something...I dunno im not a computer person and this suggestion and line of "fixing" was given to me by another person who had similar issues as I did.
