For those who don't get it:

The banner's gone.

Wouldn't be a surprise if they're starting to close down the forums.. since they laid off most if not all known admins.

They better not do it until I reach 30k

Granted, my posting has dropped off quite a bit since becoming jobless... now when I'm at home I generally prefer to, y'know, actually play the games that I post about, rather than post

Damn straight. FFXI > RL

That censor really reminds me of the fact that this place may very well potentially be going down the tubes >_>

Yea, don't think I'll hit 10k before everything is shutdown.

I'll be sad to see this place go but it does seem to be moving in that direction.

Also sad I will probably never reach 10K. So close, yet so far.

Realistically, I don't expect the XI section to just disappear. All the sub-forums will probably get merged together and it'll just be a free-for-all of whatever gets posted does so. I don't think the banner added much. As well, I always kinda thought it was ugly as sin. It actually took this thread for me to even realize it was gone, heh.

Unless there's some wider Zam issue I'm unaware of.

In case you guys haven't saw, guess the forums might not be shutting down after all but I agree with flameflash's post the layoffs due to relocation is very bad form.

And honestly... really... who in their right mind would want to move to LA?

That said, I never really liked the Young Aldo image. For all the iconic imagery this game has given us, there were so many better options.

The reason most people left Alla is because the Rate down button.
People like others to read what they have to say, when people are defaulted end of getting skipped even if they have something good to say.

Back when I used to come on here once in a great while and have opinions or wanted to talk about something, I always noticed this happening.
I have seen it happen to others and the more and more it happened, I seen less and less people coming here and they all jumped ship to another forums board.

Like FFXIAH or BlueG, I believe I said the same thing a long time ago also about the Rating, giving someone the power to shut down someones comment just makes people feel not welcomed.

I remember what I said that alla was filled with sharks, doesn't matter if those people are friends for a long time, if you strike and draw blood, all the other sharks attack and leave nothing left.

I don't believe the mass's stopped coming because of FFXIV or because FFXI slowed down.

Most left back when I played FFXI to FFXIAH that was a while ago.

Tough pill to swallow I might be defaulted for this as well I just was bored noticed the news and decided to put my 2 cents on the subject.

I've been reading this forum on a daily basis since 2005. I have only played FFXI for about 5~ months total since 2011, and I still read this forum almost every day.

Since I'm 27 now and I was 17 when I discovered this forums existence, that means I've been on this forum more than 1/3 of my lifetime. Damn, Alla!

Having been on the receiving end of some hater circle-jerks, I can at least relate to the point brought up. In practice, the system is basically a poor man's moderator in the absence of admins readily patrolling threads and banning less scrupulous things that manage to slip through filters. As a result, the inmates effectively ran the asylum. Pair this with the frustration of SE's monolithic silence under Tanaka's regime and it isn't hard to see why we'd go at each other when the game wasn't as it should or could be. The language barrier was just added insult to injury.

That said, if the bigger point was to imply Alla was the lesser board during a time of things like the "wars" between it, KI, BG, or whatever... then I'll just say such an opinion is likely to be heavily biased. Most often there were good people at all locations, some even braving multiple fronts, but they were either unseen by people who believed the anti-hype or were pathologically ignored as not to shatter a sense of superiority in "aligning" with a particular hub. Where new information was released first realistically didn't matter, as these cross-lurkers had a tendency to disseminate the info. And as much as some BG posters loathed me, I was one such person. Meanwhile, when someone like Tummie was more about dat mining, you'd usually see the lists here first. Times have changed, of course, and with that comes different faces taking on different tasks, but that's natural and okay.

I thought of the rating system as a way of finding good posts if you didn't bother reading the entire thread.

That's the pie in the sky ideal, but the potential to blindly downvote someone you don't like/disagree with is ultimately what people took issue to. Could also say there was a sort of a domino effect where if one person had a bad post in a thread, any other they made were likely to get hit, too. The actual swing between a good post and a bad one really isn't all that dramatic. If you're someone like me, only one green arrow would nab an excellent. Someone in the gray, but still decent by default, would only need 3-4. That's really not a lot to accurately sway opinion, but at the same time, also empowered the negativity. Especially if they had socks or a couple buddies.

Basically, there's a reason some places only instituted systems with upvotes. Good posts still get highlighted, but there's less subversive trolling to be done. I think in Alla's case, the ability to rate in a thread should've been restricted to having a posting in it. Those who frequently made +1's just to do that could've been more easily hammered out. But again, this would've required more active admins than we had. The report button would otherwise remain for the handling of spam/****. Thanks to users being listed at the bottom, it's not too hard to see who might've rated one way or the other these days if you check in within a half hour or so. It's basically how I know about my stubborn "friend" that I probably should've contacted someone about a while ago, but have been lazy. They think I'm wrong no matter what and that's that. And this really isn't me trying to spin some personal conceit, it's just pattern recognition.

Your opinion.

I know people who left XI, so they of course left this forum. I poke my head in here to keep an eye on the state of XI - it still played a major part of my life. I used to know about a dozen people here and all of them have walked away from XI. With XIV they spend most of their time on the official XIV forum or REDDIT (of the FC/LS Site).

While others gave up with forums all together because it was no longer needed. Even I spend little to no time on our LS/FX Forum, with so much more available on XIV in regards to the boards, again whats the point of a forum anymore.

Even XIV ZAM is quite compared to what this place used to be.

The XIV section is likely more quiet for a combination of reasons, those being that XIV is more self-contained in not needing so many guides or outside resources while the dev process itself is more transparent. Some tend to spin that as hurting the game/community, but I think those of us who played XI enough knew there were people who either didn't know about forums related to the game or didn't care to waste time on them due to their own being more limited. XIV also launched with its own official boards from the get-go. So, while some may treat them as the scourge of the internet, it's still the "right" place to vocalize anything toward SE.

I think a potential contributor to that is the fact that FFXI went quite some time into its life (as far as I remember, anyway) before it gained its own "official" forums, and these were around quite some time before that.

Not so with FFXIV, which (at least for ARR's release; I don't know anything about the game or what it had prior to that) already had its official forums at that point.

The FFXI portion began to die following the outcome of Rog v Catwho.

Also told ya so.

But now its "dead" because FFXI is "dead". All the other sites are dead too, comparative to the past.

This post made me go to youtube and listen to "The times they are a-changin'" by Bob Dylan.

Just sayin'.

I'm going away now :p
