FFXI rumorsFollow

I heard a rumor that ffxi might be shutting down, I really wish they wouldn't shut this game down. To me this is the best game I've ever played and I think all they need to do is update the graphics and the game would be perfect in my opinion. What I would like to see is FFXI go offline and just have to buy it for one price. I would buy it for 100 dollars if I could buy it once and play it all the time anytime I want. I really hope they don't shutdown, I just hope they either go free to play or offline. They would still make a lot of money even if the game was free to play or offline because they could do like other games do by buying stuff ingame like special items such as mounts or whatever. But I think ffxi is way better than ffxiv and the reason for that is the combat and story in ffxiv aren't as good as ffxi and I could play that game for hours and just get lost in crafting and farming for things or just the story quests were just awesome and I think the crafting is better in ffxi also, that's mostly what I did in ffxi. I made money constantly just by crafting or gardening. The guys that made ffxi knew what they were doing and I played this game for 10 years now and I still cant get enough of it. But to break things down I just think that ffxi need to update their graphics and make this game either free to play or offline, and they would still make good money. Honestly I don't know why people play ffxiv it looks just like wow and honestly that's exactly what it made me think of when I looked at it. The graphics were cool but that's all I liked about it.

i dunno where these rumours came from - there holding a press conference that's all! the game still has a healthy population and has been stated to be there most profitable game quite recently, worst case scenario is server merge, they might even announce a new expansion, or at least a series of add ons like Abyssea. Makes sense since the adoulin arc has now finished.

The stuff people are coming up with are pretty asinine honestly. The most we are going to see tomorrow is a road map for what they have planned for the next few years and maybe a new expansion since Seekers is all wrapped up.

No rumors just theories and here say,: but on the most positive front:

- Mass server merge
- Killing off PS2
- No new content
- The return of mini content.
- Expansion to the Vita (How will the memory/drive space work?)
- Change to the pay model
- Visual upgrades (recently with WoW)

Mind blowingly far stretch:

- Minor server merge
- New expansion
- Complete engine overhaul ( they did it with Ever Quest)
- F2p with a cash shop to buy the items you need for relics, BC etc.. (Think those free I pad games that charge you $$ to buy things so you can progress.)
- Ps4 virtual port.
- Offline/Single player modes/content.
- A new overhauled relaunch.

Bad News:

- A date for when the game ends.

Until tomorrow Its anyone's guess.

I think they should work with Turbine to make a remastered FFXI. Same code set with slight modifications. I think sending FFXI to Nexon to likely die in the future is stupid.

It is technically the beginning of the sunset of this game, it's just being dragged out over the course of a couple of years. The fact they're eliminating 2/3 of the multi-platform support tells me that there will be news later this year of server merges. However, the remaining PC players will certainly see improved graphics, UI and so forth since the PS2 won't be 'holding' the game back any longer. They most certainly didn't come right out and say it, but the implication was there during the announcements that FFXI is going into modified maintenance mode.

I believe some folks were hoping for an expansion announcement to come with this press conference, though I suppose y'all might get to see some of the undiscovered parts of Vana'diel through the Rhapsodies events. At least they have made a commitment to providing new content for at least another year to two years, so that's promising that the final shutdown wouldn't even be on the horizon until 2017.

I'm not trying to be a negative nancy or anything, just how it looks from someone who no longer plays and has seen multiple MMOs' downslide and shutdown. Sad as it is, all good things must eventually come to an end.

Id say the sun started setting about 6 years ago, shortly after the release of WoTG.

They're ending 2/3 of the platform support, but I think at this point those two combined supplied less than 10% of the players. The remaining PS2 player base for FFXI died with the Seekers expansion (all 5 of them) and the hardware is seriously beginning to show its age. Sony, too, probably gave them a warning that PS2 support itself is going to end in the next year or two - that the PSN servers will be disconnected and no more games can be routed through it after that.

This is incorrect, the majority of the JP player base still plays on PS2 and there's still a decent chunk of NA players who play on Xbox 360

I just wish they'd merge servers, to make the world actually feel.. alive. Might even get some action going that way.

The announcement should not have been a shock to anyone with the dwindling populations, only those cocooned in well established ls didn't seem to notice just how dead it is for so many others.

As a more casual player over the past 10 years, I still have oodles to do in the game, so content for me at least, is plentiful for a long time yet.

It has been a wonderful game (as much as I openly disagree with some aspects/decisions over the years), I still very much enjoy the game, the best in many ways imo. And I will continue to enjoy it, finish up content and start things I haven't even touched yet!....as long as legacy support remains for pc

It simply been too good and memorable not to.

(op as for ftp?....errrr, what could they offer to make any money? the have no store, they have no mounts, no pets, no vanity gear, no xp potions or anything that any ftp game needs to survive. As for graphics, that should have been done 6 yrs ago..way way too late for that now .)

Many do enjoy ffxiv, myself included, I'm capable of enjoying a few games. Not any one game has it all imo. They all have certain aspects that lure me in...but none have it all. Graphics in ffxiv are not even close to wow LOLOL omg . I play wow and ffxiv too, not...... even ............. remotely............. close..............The conent design is similar to wow which is why it will be quitye successful in todays mindset of gamers, but the look...totally wrong.

At any rate, we all have to accept the changes coming, make the best of them while we can.

I too suspect SE's decision is in part being driven by Sony, but I'm also sure that SE have looked at the console player numbers and figured that sad it is may be they [SE] could no longer use resources to carry on.

One thing I am sure about, unlike developers such as Turbine and Zenimax, I have no cynical views of Square Enix, especially in the light of how they handled the FFXIV 1.0 debacle, so I think they're genuinely trying to plot a path where they can continue to support the game for as long as there are enough players who still want it.

Personally I've never played an MMO that came to its natural end .. one of two clearly crashed and burned .. but however long FFXI may continue after November this year SE seem to be seriously trying to make it memorable and I applaud them for that, rather than just posting the 30-day closure notice other dead MMOs have had.

Am I being naive? Possibly, FFXI was my 'first' and even though some aspects of it are the antithesis of what I enjoy in MMOs .. forced grouping simply to level, the level-capping of old, etc. .. I have continued playing since '05, with a few months break here, a couple of months break there, and will do so likely until FFXI sails off into the sunset, following the course SE have mapped today.

Or not
#17REDACTED, Posted: May 06 2015 at 5:29 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The sad reality for FFXI is that the day they decided to just revamp old maps and call it an expansion and kill group leveling was the day the game really went down. That was a game ending decision. Was a fun game while it lasted though, back in say 2005 this game was a blast.

If you're talking about wings of the goddess I agree to an extent, but then abyssea came and the game had what is in my opinion a successful second wind.

Is this just some kind of photoshop trick or fanart? Or is a graphics upgrade happening in the shadows?

Someone needs to stop pulling on my heart strings...
