Fishing Questions...Follow

I hope it's okay that I'm not posting this in the trade skill forum, but I see it has only had 3 posts in the entire past year so... Yeah, sorry if this is a problem.

Hopefully some of the anglers of Vana'Diel can help me with a few of my questions.

There seems to be several guides to fishing in FFXI. One made by a person named Talila on ffxiclopedia, the other is on BG, made by several people. I just recently started fishing again and haven't really played much for quite awhile. I must say I absolutely hate the new system with the little arrows. Instead of actually fighting the fish it seems more like a DDR button mash. I'm not certain, but it looks like the new system has made a few of these older fishing guides obsolete. I went out and farmed the gil and bought a Lu-Shang's thinking it would help me. I guess it may have at one time, but for example, the BG guide says you can go from 0-52 in Nasmau. When I try to fish in Nashmau, due to the current system I cannot get any of the fish below 3/4 of their life with even the utmost care. I also read that the lake in Sea Serpent Grotto at J12 is a good spot, but after catching maybe 10 Nebimonites I could not catch anything else, even after a good 20 or so casts, nothing but rusty items.

I feel like there's a lot to fishing now that I might not know...

Also, do you really have to wait up to one real life month just to get a Pelican Ring? From what I see, the "contest" to get it lasts for 2 weeks then the next one doesn't start for another two weeks. It also seems like some one could very easily knock you out of your spot and you would not get the ring, making you have to wait another whole month for the chance to get one once again.

Is this truly what fishing is in Vana'Diel now? Thanks for any help.

I only fish off and on these days, but here's my take:

Fishing skill matters. A lot. Fish you outlevel will be very easy to pull up. (A change which makes me very happy - I would frequently be pulling up all sorts of odds and ends to feed other crafts, and it was annoying that I still had to work almost as hard to reel in fish 60+ levels below me.) But when you're levelling, you just can't do fish with a huge gap like you used to. I'm not sure what's considered the ideal range, but it's probably something more like 5-10 levels above you.

The Lu Shang's rod is still good to have if you're going to be serious about the craft. And the fishing gear should help too, due to the "skill matters" thing.

As for the Pelican Ring, I can't help you there... I never bothered with it.

Hi, it sounds like you may be using a shrimp lure in nasmau which will mainly get you mercs and ahtapots, these are a pain at lower levels due to the massive regen, try switching to a robber rig with your lu shangs and you can target the istridye which are the level 53 fish. I personaly switched to the shrimp lure about mid forties and aimed for the higher level fish I mentioned before with a lot more success.

The pelican ring is definitely worth doing the wait for, I got my first one yesterday and the difference was noticeable, similar skill up rate to fishing during the recent campaign. I'll be going for another one when the next contest comes up too as the charges dissapear quite quickly and if it lasts that long you can wear two and the effects stack.

Nope, I was using a robber rig.

So the Pelican Rings really do take a month to obtain some times? And how do you assure yourself a ring without being butted out at the last minute?

If you're struggling to catch Istiridye then maybe aim lower for a few levels. I went to about 30 on the Cystal Bass at the crystal pond in Jugner Forrest near the cavernous maw. They were easy with a Lu Shang and Minnow.

For the ring i just used the wiki to get the weight range for the fish then aimed as low/high as possible, I came 16th so it was close =)

Seems like pretty much all the guides and what used to work for most people is invalid now since the fishing update.

Also I've noticed something strange. I didn't log into FFXI for a couple of weeks, maybe just a week or so? When I logged in, I tried fishing. All I could fish up for what, 2-3 days was rusty buckets, didn't catch anything's, monsters and every now and then an actual fish. Same level, same spot, same bait. Fast forward a few days and now I'm back to 90% fish 10% other instead of the other way around. Is there something I'm missing here?

Also, does anyone know what the most updated fishing guide is? Thank you.

Think part of countering fishing fatigue as an anti-botting mechanism is to zone. If you'd just logged out and back in at the fishing spot, that probably didn't count. Guessing in your frustration, you probably left the area to do some other things.
