Ok so i've been playin for a few days, got spark armor and weapon for my war, access to adoulin, some trusts, and now im not sure what to do next. Can someone explain the basics of getting into endgame content and what i should be doing? I'm trying to get into it with my war or paladin so if you can give me personal advice on either of those that would be appreciated too. thanks.

Eh... You should focus on getting a 119 weapon. The easiest route to that is to get it from Oboro. You will want to get Minos for your WAR and Priwen for your PLD

Priwen is a poor man's ochain... you're also going to want to work on getting a 119 sword for your PLD. The most accessible one would be the regular skirmish one, so you'd start with doing Skirmish in Cirdas then you'd need to do Yorcia skirmish to get translurry, then Raz skirmish to upgrade it to +2.

It's not the best sword by any means, but it's probably the most accessible 119 for a new player. On the way to getting it you should be able to get some skirmish gear as well, and then you'd be in a position to start to upgrade select bits (I have to confess I don't know if any of the 119 skirmish heavy gear is decent since I don't play jobs that wear that armor I haven't looked at it!)

You should also be doing wildskeepers as there are some decent bits and accessories you can get, especially with the augments. Like the helm from Achuka is really nice, as is the sword (it's too low ilevel for a lot of content but with Occasionally Attacks Twice and another augment, it's definitely a fun toy for Acc capped situations)

It really is worthwhile. Even though the weapons are a tad bit expensive many of them are totally decent, they will definitely be a good start for you to do any endgame, especially since as a DD you need all the +skill you can get... really you are just paying to whiff less, even if the weapons themselves are not fantastic. Either way Priwen is actually a fantastic piece for PLD - especially if you don't plan on spending 6 months farming ultimate weapons before you plan to play.

My advice is try to make some friends to do a "difficult" battle with to get your unlock, and in the meantime start farming some money - Things you can do for money that don't require good gear are joining voidwatch shouts (you'll ideally want to be skilled up in all your weapons), Walk of Echoes (when it's going) farming dynamis dreamlands zones (if you don't have them unlocked that is something else to work on - although it's not ideal unless you have /dnc subjob), salvage (if you have access)... etc.

awesome that all helps a ton, just money will be an issue because im not far into vw at all, and never done walk of echoes, dont have the dreamlands zone nor do i know how to farm them properly, but i will figure it out eventually. Thanks for everything :)

You don't need to have the clears to join void watch shouts. The disadvantage is no warp to the site, but it's pretty easy to get around these days.

If you sell a lot of the skirmish upgrade stones you get you can make decent cash too. Not ideal since you will probably end up wanting to buy them back later to get augments but in the short term it can make sense to help you get weapons

Well you can use trusts and you are allowed to solo... I haven't tried the Cirdas/Rala skirmishes solo but I couldn't quite pull off Yorcia solo... so I'd recommend getting a couple friends together. Three players in 117 gear with 3 trusts shouldn't have too much trouble I don't think, not with Rala and Cirdas anyway.

A well geared BLM is great in Yorcia if you can get one. BLU is also nice. Your WAR should be in good shape in so far as AOE WS will come in handy (as long as you can survive!). Really though you can probably run with anyone, might take a few tries to get the hang of it, but just make sure to run in the back, get the Noetic Ascensions and kill the nests...

The pop items are cheap, if you're worried about being able to complete it just use a tier 1 head, body and legs. Shouldn't cost more than 10-20K max for a pop. The gear drops are party wide so most groups let the person who popped pick 1 item of their choice - but if you are running with friends you can divide stuff however you want. Yorcia is pretty tedious if you have a good group, so if you get comfortable it is worthwhile switching to a higher tier pop since you just have to wait and wait and wait and it can be very boring.

There is more info about Cirdas/Rala/Yorcia skirmishes here: http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Category:Skirmish

Unfortunately no one has updated the info about Raz'Ka'Nar skirmishes really yet. On the bright side, you have a lot to do before worrying about that.

Oboro wont even let you get 119 weapons until you do difficult content first.

This was my problem <.<

Totally, it is a problem. That said, I did my first "D" with other people who did not have 119 weapons for the most part. We had to use our one hours and it was definitely tough but we managed. (We did the orc one if that helps)

It will be hard to find a pick up group willing to take you as a DD without a 119 though. I am not going to lie. That's why I suggested making friends. A lot of people are geared up well enough now that they can carry one lower output DD.

This was why I dropped out of FFXI after hitting 99. The endgame is such a confusing pain in the *** to break into. The game offers no pointers at all, and even when other players are nice enough to explain it I still I walk away like "Wait, what?" It's really convoluted.

I'll still end up returning eventually though cause this game is nostalgia crack.

well it's just that there is a big diversity of ways to approach endgame. It's the downside to having a lot of content remain current. It means that you will never ever ever run out of things to do (especially if you haven't been playing for the full decade or so), but it also means there is no "one clear way" forward.

Frankly the best way to approach it is to make friends at a similar-ish position to you in the game and learn together.

Also, I think the biggest issue is that most players want to get into endgame before they are really ready for it. Like, I don't know what it's like in other games, but actually, hitting 99 does not in any way mean that it's time for endgame in FFXI.

I understand the desire to get started in endgame, since soloing forever is boring, but this game, for better or for worse, has a ton of content gated by old old old content. I know, because I hate doing missions, and I am locked out of a lot of end game opportunities because of that. Honestly, I think it's a dumb design decision by the devs because it makes it much much harder to keep new players (it is discouraging to constantly find out you can't do an event because you haven't soloed hours of cut scenes).

Anyway, the only way to enjoy this game in the long term is to not get into the mindset of "rushing" because you will inevitably hit the wall and ragequit because this game WILL NOT LET YOU RUSH. Pretty much everything is gated in one way or another, and that gating often requires you to spend a lot of time soloing regardless of whether you are endgame geared or not.

Also I should mention some of the unity NMs drop 119 gear. Even though it's generally not the best 119 gear it's actually probably the most accessible. To access those NMs you need to spend unity accolades, so do your Records of Eminence unity objectives.

Also you can work on getting your AF/relic upgraded to 119 but that requires the near completion of Chains of Promathia missions before you can start (other than getting the base pieces anyway)

To talk to Oboro, it's easiest to solo a Sacred Kindred Crest BCNM with trusts on Difficult. If you're not confident doing that maybe bring a friend or two. The Chamber of Oracles one in Quicksand Caves is the easiest by far. Just doing this will enable Oboro to talk to you.

If you need gil for the weapon, just do a Salvage II run or two-- can easily solo 700k-1.4 mil a day in Alexandrite (depending on server and your luck with drops.)

Aside from that, the hardest part I have found is getting into groups regardless of what gear you have. It seems like sometimes people would rather shout in Jeuno for 12 hours looking for a perfect setup for even the easiest content. "Need 4 song bard!" "Aegis/Ochain pld!" "DD must have capped accuracy at the expense of other stats even though you have no trouble at all hitting mobs in the easy BCNM we're doing" "rng rng rng cor plzzzz" it's really kind of stupid.
