Make sure the DirectX you installed had either version 8 and/or 9 in it, as the game isn't really modernized per se for modern graphics tech.

This happens to me and my GF's computer right after an update every single time. The only solution I can find is by doing a system restore to an earlier date. We both have an alienware and windows 8, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I have seriously tried everything else. From researching on google for a while the ONLY solution is a system restore or restoring your PC to factory defaults and reinstalling the game.

Everyone else who has found difficult loopholes around it still had huge problems from the game after that. No idea what causes this but it's game breaking.

The only way I have found to prevent it is after the version update is complete, completely close POL by X'ing out of it instead of clicking the "OK" button to launch the game. Relogging in and starting up the game causes no issues from then on.

You mentioned you upgraded your video card. Did you bother to uninstall the drivers for the old card, and then installing the new drivers? Even if you purchased the same type (NVidia or ATI (AMD) I would recommend uninstalling the drivers, and reinstalling using the disc that came with the card. From there, then update the driver from the manufacturer's website. Direct3D is dependant upon DirectX, so if you are planning on playing FFXI, I would make sure DirectX 8.0c and DirectX 9.0 both are installed on the system you use to play FFXI. Also, make sure you use the PlayOnline installer from www.playonline.com for Windows 7, and not from any disc or other download.

Also, if you are running Windows 8, please make sure you download legacy game support from the windows app store, or search for how to download it online.

Hope this helps!

you dont have to install the drivers from the cd just go straight to manufacturers website, the drivers on the cd are always out of date.

either here for nvidia http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk

or here for radeon http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

then go here and install older directx updates http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=35
