Firstly, some background information: http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/05/29/lineage-ii-classic-server-detailed/

Lineage 2 is currently in the process of launching three subscription-based hybrid-classic servers (classic servers with some modern amenities) which are being beta tested at the moment. NCSoft originally planned to have only one, but it became popular enough to warrant three. They're currently the most populated servers in the game.

Second classic server launched, with international ones being considered: http://2p.com/6773375_1/Innova-wants-to-launch-a-Lineage-2-Russian-Classic-Server-by-Apophis.htm

Third classic server launched: http://i.imgur.com/e2zryGU.jpg

EU classic server confirmed: http://boards.rochand.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=1265&start=350#p27507

NA classic server being considered: http://s16.postimg.org/ce6zleln9/Dear_NCsoft.png

Now, how is this relevant? Quite a few people have hoped that Square would release some sort of classic server for FFXI. With the recent influx of players, the aging Lineage 2 has proved that it might be worthwhile for Square to test the waters with their own hybrid-classic server. If it'll revitalize the population and bring people back, having some sort PTS to gauge the interest wouldn't be a bad idea.

What are your thoughts?

i like the idea of a "hybrid" classic server. mix in some new with the old for the best of both worlds.

they could lower the level cap to 75 and make the classic server pre-abyssea, but still keep things like trusts, fields of valor, level sync, etc to keep leveling somewhat fluid and enjoyable. keep the rate of exp gained from mobs the same as it is now, so you don't have to spend ages grinding like you used to. keep mobs at their current difficulty, so you can still solo EM-T mobs for exp if you want.

this way, you could choose to solo or group up. neither method would be inferior to the other, and you wouldn't be forced to wait hours for an invite. they could also keep all of the current ui enhancements, and keep the level caps removed from mission-based objectives. stuff like that.

that doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. i'd play on it, and i wasn't even particularly fond of the older FFXI.

if you were not particularly fond of older XI, why would you play on a classic server VS today's servers?

i enjoyed the social aspect of older xi and i enjoyed how it was different from other mmos. however, i was never particularly fond of having to wait hours for groups to grind exp or complete mission objectives. if se were to make a hybrid classic server with modern enhancements (keeping trusts, level sync, fields of valor, increased exp gains from mobs and allowing players to solo EM-T mobs, etc) while still maintaining the best parts of old xi, i would play that over the current servers.

Being able to solo everything would hardly be a classic FFXI experience though...It would just feel like the current game with less zones. Leveling to Qufim for 50 levels wouldn't really feel like a classic FFXI experience either..Like at all.

I'm not even sure where you would classify a "classic" FFXI experience. For me it would be right around the conclusion of all the CoP missions and the release of Sea and its endgame content up to Absolute Virtue. That way, it would be more content but wouldn't negate any older content simply by existing.

I would probably go back to it, but only if the population was really high like it initially used to be in 2004-2006. That wont ever happen, so I guess I can say "No". It would be very hard for me to start over, but going back to a point when the game felt alive would be an easy decision.

EDIT:
The only hybrid aspects I would even like to see thrown in are some of the quality of life adjustments. Like just going to "Sell" and having the auction history pop up, and the new gear swap system.

yeah id play on a classic server, basically the game how it was just before abyssea and the level cap rise, so level 75, but all expansion content up to wotg, and the 3 mini expansions. i'd keep current rate of exp gain so leveling is quicker than before but no trusts, so people would have to group once again! no force popping, bring back king camps! If you dont like camping, there's still sky/limbus einherjar etc! Also i'd reverse the mpk patch so when you zone a mob will move slowly back to its spawn location and agro everything in its path like the old days! Also none of this zone jumping, make people use whm teleport, airships and chocobos again!

'Classic' FFXI (to use the term as it's most often applied to those wanting 'classic' WOW, aka. 'vanilla', and other long-running games) was never seen by NA players and I doubt many here played on the JP servers when 'classic' XI existed .. or does 'classic' mean whatever flavour of pre-SOA XI you want it to mean?

Seems to me most are using 'classic' to refer to whatever state XI was in before the expansion they [the poster] didn't like, as in the case of the post above this one.

Classic, to me at least, would be FFXI as it was when I first played it back in 2004; FFXI + RoTZ with nothing else. I don't particularly yearn for those days, though... As I aged, I was able to see past my rose-tinted spectacles and realise those days weren't as good as I remember them.

I'm sure a 'classic' server would be a nice nostalgia trip for a while, but I really doubt anyone would be happy going back to it for too long. Depending on the era you're from, you have an enormous collection of problems to choose from that I'm personally glad to see dead.

Here's a short list of what I remember:

- The introduction of Colibri, and the death of the Black Mage in groups.
- Camping Kings/HNM for 8+ hour windows, claims being 'stolen', bots! drama! subterfuge!
- Fishing. Oh, god... the fishing.
- 3-4k exp/hr (Lower exp/monster, lower chain exp cap, etc).
- MPK.
- Higher exp needed to ding in the upper levels.
- Mobs taking forever to respawn.
- Competition for exp camps which crippled exp for all parties involved.
- Using less optimal camps because of said competition and getting even less exp.
- Healer/Tank/(Job) leaves, can't find rep, party you spent an hour forming breaks after one exp chain.

Now, don't think I'm hating on 'classic' FFXI. I have many fond memories of it! Those parties that took an hour to form sometimes lasted long into the night. You and five other people slew crabs, lizards, crawlers, and flies for hours on end. You chatted, you laughed, you formed friendships, gained Linkshell pearls, and all that good stuff. I do miss those days. When I occasionally go back to FFXI I feel isolated from everyone else, and it just makes me click the cancel button on my subscription that little bit faster each time. I'd play a 'classic' server for a while just for the opportunity to chat to random people in a party once again. PUGs of 18 people are so impersonal... there's very little social aspect to FFXI any more, imo.

If SE can think of a way for people to converse and relate to one another in game again, then sign me up and take my money.

Most people who are talking about "classic" ffxi are referring to the game as it was before the cap was raised to 80. I suppose you could argue it could be the end of any expansion, but no expansion ever out dated old content the way that raising the cap past 75 did. So the accepted "classic" experience for most is the final patch before the raise to 80.

As for the server itself i would definaely play on it, and i know a few more that would too. It would be interesting to see but if its ever going to happen, it would still be at least a few years from now. In my opinion i dont ever see this happening though. Would be nice to see but with the success of ffxiv i doubt they will want to revisit such old content. Lineage 2 might be doing this simply because subs are falling too low and they needed a reason to save it (just my thinking i know nothing of that game).
