Multiple Jobs on one characterFollow

I've heard that, at least in the old days, a character could only have one Job and one Subjob at a time. Everyone says that having multiple Jobs is one of the biggest draws of FFXIV.

Now that there have been many more "Advanced" Jobs released, is it still that way?

For example, if you start out as a RDM and at level 30 decide to switch to a GEO, do you lose all your levels in RDM and have to level it from 1 again if you want to play RDM again?

I never actually tried switching Jobs out of fear of this happening.

Its never been that way ever since I played back in 2003/2004, you can switch jobs without any risk.

You can only have one job and one subjob set at any given time, but changing between jobs and subjobs can be done more or less at any time (you need to be in your mog house, garden, or speaking to a nomad mog) and without any negative ipact.

Note however, that each job is leveled independently; your level 99 red mage will have very little impact on your level 5 warrior, other than having some shared skills leveled. Skills, however, are capped with respect to current main/sub job and level. So, that level 5 warrior will have access to the level 99 red mage's sword and evasion skills (as examples, there are additional shared skills) but only to the maximum available to a level 5 warrior; changing back to red mage will give access to the fully skilled (for red mage) skills. Because skill caps are based on level and job, taking a different job to 99 (thief for example) will result in some skills being available for even further advancement (particularly for thf, evasion). However, if those are brought to cap for the new job, switching back to another job will cap them at the previous job/level cap for that job.

In short, change jobs and subs whenever you like, learn their different strengths, weaknesses and play styles. You will not lose anything, but may discover that you have additional skills, spells and equipment to aquire.

This.

Right now, my Marksmanship on my WAR and THF is going up a lot slower than I'd like, and my Shield skill is way back, too.

So, someday when I get bored... I might level RNG and I already have PLD on 63? something like that.

The thing about FFXI's job system, is that each job has a "Grade" in skills: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C, D, E, F.... IIRC, a THF has... what in Marskmanship again? C? Something like that, while a RNG has something like an A. This means that a RNG would have a higher skill cap at any given level, and higher grade skills increase faster when you use them. So, if I leveled RNG up to the 70s, 80s, etc... I could probably *easily* cap my Marksmanship skill so that my WAR (or THF) would miss a lot less often with crossbow bolts (Acid Bolts are still awesome, years later).

Paladin and Shield is another example. I don't use a shield often on Warrior or Thief, but when I do... I don't block all that often with it, partly because my skill is so far behind but it goes up so slowly because both Warriors and Thieves have somewhat of a low Shield skill. Paladin, however, has awesome shield skill. Also, PLD is good at leveling Clubs and Swords.

It encourages you to level different jobs if you want to increase different skills faster and easier for better overall performance.
