Hello,

Just started up again and are remembering the woes of being broke. What are the best ways for newbies to amass some cash nowadays?

Buy stacks of skill up books at the sparks vendor and put them up on the AH. Depending on the book one stack can go for 50k-100k gil.

or

Buy higher level sparks weapons and vendor them. For instance, Darksteel Sword (lvl 51) costs 750 sparks and vendors for 7500 gil.

Edit: I suppose the methods I mentioned don't help very much at low levels. Crystal sales are always good starter income, and nowadays there are some decent drops in brown treasure caskets that spawn randomly. Sometime you even get a rare item worth a fair amount (very rarely, but they do exist). Walking around with signet ensures all mobs can drop crystals, and holding onto crafting mats is another solid income. Now that ores and logs stack to 12 they're more viable to sell then they used to be, so holding onto them is pretty viable even with limited inventory. There's also HELM (harvest, excavate, mine, lumber), in many low level areas worth checking out. In zeruhn mines for example, you can farm up zinc ores pretty reliably. They're almost always in demand because of their attachment to a quest in Windy which raises tenshodo fame, so they sell reliably and fast. You could probably list several stacks and move them with little hassle.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Yes, they are all linked, so you need not worry.

As for a low level, I'd suggest selling crystals for gil. Just sayin'.

If you are lucky, mystery boxes kupo power will be active. I was running out of inventory space with all the armor I kept picking up. I'd keep a set to wear, and npc the rest, just from the initial run of zones (gustaberg, K. Highlands, dunes and pashow or their equivalent areas). Depending on the gear, it would NPC between a few hundred and almost 2k. More than enough to buy most spells for rdm 1-60 (farmed the ice spikes scroll), increased my gobbiebag, and pay for blu AF. Nothing close to rich, but it is enough to get me what I want to do what I do. Sparks basically eliminate the need to spend gil on weapons. Don't underestimate what some people will pay for stacks of generic items you get while killing low level mobs. And don't be afraid to put up stuff that has a 1000 gil price history. It most likely sells quickly, and you could possibly list new stuff 2-3 times a day depending on your playtime. It can add up.

For evidence, I cite my ffxiah history. 193 transactions since May 9th. In two months, I've spent 986k and sold 775k. Closest I came to purposely farming for gil was selling stacks of gausebit wildgrass for 30k. I knew this sold for a decent amount, so I purposely xp'd on flys in Mer. Mountains, making it a double goal for the day.

If you have access to mog gardens, you can make some steady gil that way. It'll require gil or the SoA currency bayld to upgrade to the upper levels to start getting the good stuff. Plus as an added bonus you'll have a random item wash up on the beach every real life day, ranging from logs to NM pop items to dynamis currency.

If you're level 99, salvage is basically free money. Arrapago remnants takes me about 10 minutes to solo on mnk, and gives a guaranteed linen purse, worth about 750k on average.
