The last time I played FFXIV... Was probably just before or just after thew newest expansion was announced. I spent a plethora of time in Abyssea trying to farm my damn Summoner boots, (which never dropped from the chest, bleh).. I believe I remember coming back during a free weekend...
Anyway, I'm rambling. The world of Vana'diel seems to have up and changed on me. I'm seeing a lot of new terms, along with terms I know but never saw in FFXI like item levels... Just how much has the game changed? Would it even be worth putting in the time at this point, or would I be too far behind? What should I know before considering turning my account back on?

It depends on what you want to accomplish.
Do you want to try to aim for being a #1 player on the server and being the best dressed in the endgame party? Don't bother joining again. The rat race today is rough to catch up on. Even people who played steadily aren't always geared to the teeth.
On the other hand, if you want to see what kind of story they're telling in SoA - and it's a pretty intriguing one - and test out the new mechanics of the expansion, or maybe level up jobs solo with a bevy of NPCs supporting you, or try out some of the new "hard mode" fights - then by all means, please return! The hard mode AA fights are rough but doable in a party of six, and between Trust and Records of Eminence you can just do you own thing a lot of the time.

Also you can trade any 3 pairs of chest boots for boots of your choice now! Good news!
