have you set the taskbar to autohide? I ask this because even modern programs like google chrome won't cover the taskbar except in boarderless fullscreen, which the official windowed mode doesn't do. Also, I checked and being covered by the taskbar shouldn't have any effect on the way FFXI is rendered. Though from the context of your post (it seems that you have been away for a number of years), it may just be that it is so long since you played, that 2002 era text rendering from a port of a PS2 game no longer looks as good as it used to (compared to other games), and by going back to it, you are unintentionally comparing it to more modern games.
The text rendering bug does not happen in fullscreen mode, though.: It ONLY does it with the official windowed mode. I tested Windower's Borderless Window mode, and it doesn't have the text rendering bug either.
So it isn't a problem of me comparing FFXI to modern games.
As far as hiding the taskbar... that'd be awkward to turn that on and off every time I go to play FFXI; I just don't see that being feasible. I like my Taskbar being visible when I'm not playing games; I'd have to keep turning auto-hide on and off every time I go into a game and that's just not a reasonable solution to the problem.
But if you're sure that FFXI's text rendering has nothing to do with the fact the window is being squished by having to allow for the taskbar room, then the taskbar isn't even the cause anyways.
Though that reminds me. I do remember seeing a "Menu Resolution". Maybe I'll try lowering that and it might be able to fit the menu on the screen without distortions.
EDIT: nope, that didn't work either. Tried setting it significantly lower, still distorted.
EDIT2: Wow, seriously, a ratedown for this? *rolls eyes*
