I've perused this forum and I've found some very useful information here and elsewhere but I still have many questions. If you all could help me out it would be very much appreciated. Last time I played was mid 2009. I think FoV was released shortly before then, though the rewards weren't that great. I quit due to losing my job at the time and I never fathomed coming back until now. I've played Wow and different free-to-play after I re-achieve some financial stability, but the dynamics of this game make me miss it. I've installed enough and read enough to know that my server Kujata was merge with Valefor. I've installed PlayOnline and confirmed that my old characters are still there. So here we go with the questions.

Money making + food: I won't ask for your gil making strategy, just tips regarding what I used to do.
I used to love fishing. To me it was a relaxing way to decompress. Black sole was an awesome fish back in 2009 since there were very few botters and lots of people used Sole Sushi during leveling parties.

I checked FFXIAH, and it appears there is no movement on this fish or for many others that used to sell well. Is fishing still an ok way to make gil? Do people still down food in parties/alliances b/c their performance depends on it? Perhaps it's just not fish based foods? The reason I ask this is that I also have a 100 cook on another character. I only used it before for my benefit, but if making food for others is viable, I'm ok with that, and I'm willing to farm the non-fish meat or whatever.

End game gil is probably a lot different than leveling up gil. Do I need to worry about gil when leveling like I used to or is there and another way to get the necessary equipment for leveling? I heard some things about something called "spark" I think, but will that get me what I need to level from 1-99? What about my character that is still 75 war, or 50 drk, or 32 mnk? Should they get this spark thing or just do as they did in 2009 and buy upgrades off the auction house? This is perhaps my point of most confusion. If someone could clarify it, it would be very helpful. I used to be a very conscientious player. I certainly don't want to show up to a party/alliance in sub-standard gear and leach off of the other members.

Job/Subjob for parties/alliances:
When I left the game there were certainly "best jobs" and best "sub jobs".
Best jobs/sub job combos when I left in no particular order:
war/nin
sam/war or nin
drg/war
drk/war or nin
pld/war
nin/war
whm/blk (maybe sch?)
blk/ whm (maybe sch?)
rdm/whm (maybe sch?)
smn/whm
thf/nin

I may be missing some.
Are these still the preferred combos? If not, what are? Will most parties/alliances not accept me if I am not one of the preferred combos? If I missed any jobs and/or there still are "best" choices that are different than above please let me know.

End Game + LS size:
I've read that most things can be accomplished with smaller groups and that large LS's aren't so common anymore. Is this true?

Can a group of four members accomplish most things? Or is there a need to team up in a larger LS and/or a larger parties than four for most end game events (story line missions, BCNM, Dynamis, other stuff that was introduced after I left the game)?

Crafting in general:
I assume not much had changed except for the skill cap increase I read about. If that's the case, then most crafts are just for fun still and not for profit, right? (Cooking may be one diff... depending on answer above..) Again, if you make a profit in this I do not want you to tell everyone your niche. I'm just looking for general advice. But do niches still exist, or are all avenues saturated? If so, I would like to know, but please leave it to me to figure out what they are. I'm not looking for a free ride.

Leveling up:
I've read that most people do FoV and GoV until 30 and then do Abysses. I know what FoV is, but I have no idea what GoV is. Any links are appreciated. I haven't read up much on Abysses, especially how it works or the options involved, but my general understanding is once you reach 30 you can do "this" until 99. Or you can do they same old zones with a party and get double exp (b/c all mob exp has been doubled) which is slower than Abysses, but still viable. Is this correct?

Party invites + jobs that are below average:
When I left the game, once people got to Aht Urhgan, no one would invite a blm or whm. Rdm were the mage to be.
Are there still jobs that are undesired in general? Or at certain levels? In 2009 SMN where considered below average for any roll they could fill (dd, support, healing), they just couldn't be average or above average in anything. Are they still below average in everything? Are there other classes who are considered below average?

I have more questions, but I think this is enough typing for now. Any help/advice is much appreciated.

I can't personally speak on the acquiring of gear from 1-99 since the majority of my jobs were leveled well before some of the major changes to the game were made, but there are readily obtainable gear options from Abyssea (which, while accessible from lv. 30, is tailored towards characters starting in the mid to upper 70's) that can serve you until reach lv. 99 and gain access to Adoulin gear and the like. There are several lv. 99 (with varying item level) weapons and armor that you can obtain through Skirmish, Wildskeeper Reives, Records of Eminence, and Bayld that you can at least having a working set of equipment to use in a good deal of end game content so you can work towards some of the harder to obtain/more time consuming gear (item lv. 119 Artifact/Relic armor, Divine Might, Arch Angel/etc hard mode weapons, etc).

For job combinations, based on lv. 99 content, so there might be some different SJ options at lower levels due to when you'll get traits/abilities, it depends largely on what content you are doing. Subbing Ninja is still used in fights like hard mode Divine Might because of the vast damage output of the Ark Angels, but in general Dual Wielding isn't as often used as before. Samurai is basically /War or (very rarely) /Nin, and most other two-handed DD (Drk, War, etc) will use /Sam due to Store TP for X-hit builds, Meditate, Hasso, Seigan + Third Eye, etc. Dual Wielding axes still has its place for War here and there should you have the Ruinator merit weaponskill, so /Nin is still an option for that too. Drk, in situations of pure offense, will sometimes go /War in place of /Sam, as their high delay weapons and the "recent" buff to Last Resort, help to make up from some of what they're losing from /Sam, as well as gaining Berserk, Aggressor, Warcry, and Double Attack.

Pld/War is still common, as is Pld/Dnc for situations of needing to tank a monster away from a healer and needing to be self sufficient in terms of status effect removal. Nin/War is also still very common, but /Dnc is again a good SJ as well, especially for soloing. It offers you a way to cure yourself, additional ways to enfeeble enemies via Steps, a decent Stun from Violent Flourish, and, most notably, Haste Samba.

For Black Mage and White Mage, /Rdm has pretty much become the new standard subjob, as it gives them full potency Refresh, Convert, Phalanx, and Fast Cast, while still giving Blm just about everything they got from /Whm, barring AoE heals and -na spells (which Blm aren't going to often need to cast anyway). Scholar will also use Rdm for most all situations (for the same reasons given for Whm subbing it, as well as being able to Accession bar-spells, Phalanx, and en- spells), except for when they're needing to Stun, in which case they're going to go /Blm. Sch, thanks to its various Grimoire abilities, has the most accurate and quickest casting/recast Stun in the game right now, making them the best stunner in those situations where it's necessary. Rdm will often be either Blm or Whm sub, depending on the situation they're needed. Smn will generally use /Rdm for all but the rare situation where they know they'll need to remove debuffs too often to rely on Bloodpacts, in which case they'll go with /Whm.

Thf now has access to natural Dual Wield and, at 99, has access to the same potency of Dual Wield as it'd get from /Nin, so the only reasons to /Nin are Utsusemi, Sneak/Invis, and as a proc trigger for things like Abyssea. Otherwise, they'll generally go /Dnc or, for purely offensive purposes, /War.

Mnk is a job you didn't mention that has become quite a major powerhouse again, and outside of the situations where it needs Utsusemi (namely those hard mode fights, etc), they're /War.

While some of the higher-tier content (namely the Hard mode versions of fights like Divine Might, Stellar Fulcrum, etc) are catered towards full party/full alliances, a lot of content now is tailored for more casual, low-man situations, where a handful of people can go in and make quick progress. Most Skirmish fights only require a handful of people, and each run is over in half an hour at most, and that's the general sort of change to playing the game. It's better suited for quick progress with smaller groups rather than gathering up alliances and taking several hours to do something (like old Dyna used to be). Usually those larger fights are either LS based or formed with pick up groups.

Grounds of Valor (GoV) is essentially Fields of Valor, but in dungeon areas rather than out in the field (Gusgen Mines, Crawlers' Nest, etc). Grounds of Valor has benefits over Fields of Valor, in that the actual exp per page completed of the same trial is increased with subsequent completions up to a cap. For example, page 1 might start out with 600 exp reward, but doing page 1 again will result in an exp reward of 700, and so on and so forth until it's 2100 exp per page. Again, I can't attest really to what others are doing since I'm not exping anymore, but generally people seem to not bother with Abyssea exping anymore in favor of leveling through GoV pages and using Trust NPCs to act as supplement players in a party. The new Trust system lets you summon multiple existing FFXI NPCs to aid you in battle, acting as DDs, buffers, or healers, depending on each (Shantotto's a Blm, Ulmia's a Brd, Zeid is a Drk, etc). They're very hardy and reasonably intelligent in terms of AI, which lets you kill things with considerable ease and rack up exp quickly.

Some jobs have become far more sought after than before, while others are now or are still relatively unneeded/unwanted. Red Mage for example has become far less desired than before, namely due to its strengths in the roles it was called for becoming overshadowed by other, better options . Puppetmaster, Dragoon, and Beastmaster are also ones that aren't really wanted, though part of that is due to continued persecution despite several advances job adjustment wise that have made them far more formidable. Recent changes to elemental magic has actually made Blm very strong in general, for the damage formulas and cast times/recast times have been changed to where you can readily spam tier I spells for significant damage. This was done to counter to help even out the distance in damage output that existed between melee DD and Blm.

I know that doesn't cover everything you've asked, but that should hopefully help a bit in terms of catching you up to speed on some things.

I can answer the fishing/cooking questions; Sushi has not been used a lot until recently. It's just coming back into vogue b/c things in Delve and the new endgame events (including the new higher level bcs and DM v.2 and such) are hard to hit, so everyone wants sushi again for those events if they don't wanna wiff lots.

For a good while the only fewd that'd sell well was either meat dishes or the skillup fewds. (If you're curious, the magic skillup fewds by rank (lowest percent gain/cap to highest precent gain/cap) are: Stuffed Pitaru, Poultry Pitaru. Seafood Pitaru, and B.E.W. Pitaru. The physical skillup fewds(again, lowest to highest) are Saltena, Elshena, Montanga, and Maringna.)

I've also had good luck with yellow curry buns, and red curry buns never go out of style. Mind this is on the Quetz server; check FFXI AH and stuff to find out what sells.

Also some of the sushi currently on ah may be coming from fish from Mog Garden; I know I get sole in there now and then. ^^ And jsut a fyi, I've been working on my fishing so I can make gil outside of events and so I can more easily make tacos/sushi/fish stuff for my shellmates and me. ^^

As for new recipes, I've been meaning to try out making some pizza slices to slip to a friend tomorrow for tests. They just bought that out, I don't know if it's enough acc for the endgame events though.

Anyway for fishing specifically, I would have to ask a friend of mine. My strats for making gil usually involve combining fishing, farming and cooking and selling stuff that sells for good profits and that doesn't take me very long to gather the mats. (Farming smarter and not harder) However, he has tons of gil, mostly made from fishing on SEVERAL mules (don't ask me how many) so I think there's still a way to make gil from fishing.

Also gil isn't as necessary for gear anymore, as Vor said. But on the reverse, you'll still want some for food and meds (My endgame shell requires you bring some minimum meds for delve) and proly for gear to get yourself started even tho you can get better with sparks and the new eg events. More if you're a wee bit nuts and start a R/M/E weap, but that's another kettle of fishy all together. ^_^
