I add to what I posted yesterday.

Here's my chat log with SE support:
Agent Daniel A: Hello and thank you for contacting SQUARE ENIX Customer Support. Just a few moments while I review your question, please.
Agent Daniel A: While I look over your ticket information, may I have your first name and PlayOnline ID please?
Agent Daniel A: Are you still there?
You: sorry
You: yes
You: My name is Bander
You: but i don't have the play online ID, it is what I am lacking
You: It could be solathan tho
Agent Daniel A: No, a PlayOnline ID is four capital letters followed by 4 numbers.
Agent Daniel A: The next thing we would use to locate it is a Final Fantasy XI registration code tied to the account.
You: yes, ill give you that
You: Play online registeration code : X
You: Final fantasy 11 registeration code: X
Agent Daniel A: Please hold while I look into your issue.
You: thank you
Agent Daniel A: Ok, I am back, Bander. Thank you for holding.
You: thanks :)
Agent Daniel A: We apologize, but the account that was located through your registration code has been deleted due to an extended period of inactivity. Because of this, we will be unable to provide any assistance with recovering the account.

In order to create a new PlayOnline account an unused registration code would be required. This can only be obtained from a new physical or digital download verison of FINAL FANTASY XI. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
You: hmm, does square enix have the right to destroy the game i bought with cash? is it in the EULA?
You: and, can you give me the playonline ID and password anyway?
You: deleting the file I can get, but destroying what I paid for is unbelievable
You: I know its not your fault, sorry. I'm just very upset
Agent Daniel A: We did not destroy anything, the account was deleted too long ago to be deleted, and per the EULA, you retain no ownership rights to an account. Again, I do apologize.
Agent Daniel A: Are there any different issues I can assist you with right now?
You: Fair enough. Can you give me the old ID ? just for keeps?
Agent Daniel A: I cannot provide it. It is deactivated as it is. I do apologize.
Agent Daniel A: Anything else?
You: No, thanks
You: Good luck

So, that's it. All my hard work gone, because I didn't play for a while (around 2-3 years)

And the money I paid to buy the game (59.99 us$ I think, back then), is now also wiped out.

I really want to play the game, but I can't bring myself to pay for the original game+expansion.

Thanks for listening :)

The full collection with all expansions is a $30 digital download on Amazon and comes with 30 free days. Even if you got your old account back you'd still need to buy this in order to get all the new content anyway, but if you start a new account with the codes you get 30 free days.
Maybe it's a shame to lose your original character, but starting over will only cost you about $17 if you count the free month, whereas reactivating your old account would still cost $30 to get access to current content.

I thought they no longer did that. It sure is an archaic policy if they still do. None of the major MMOs that I can think of delete accounts or characters due to inactivity. I haven't played WoW in years, but if I wanted to start again right now I could do so without any hassle at all. I'd be hard pressed to want to do business with SE anymore if they did this to me. I'm not trying to convince you to not sign back up, but you have every right to be P.O.ed at them.

That really sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. I thought they had discontinued it too, as I reactivated a couple months ago after 3yr off and I was still there.

I actually "deleted" my main character once a few years ago so I wouldn't be tempted to come back again, and was able to retrieve it with the character reactivation service, about 6 months to a year later.Damn you SE . Different scenario i know , but that sucks you can't get yours back. It does go on sale on steam from time to time for $10-$20.

With recurrent waves of returning players, I think it makes sense for SE to keep accounts.

Pretty damn sure they don't unless it's been a few years. My account was inactive from march 2013 - december 2013, well over the '3 months of inactivity' they used to use over 6 years ago.

My account was inactive from 2011 until 3 days ago, and all my chars were still there.

Seems like random deletion rather than "inactive for extended period of time".

There used to be a policy that they had as far as when characters were put up for deletion. It didn't mean they were actually deleted, just queued to be up for deletion after awhile. I know that even back then, some people had their accounts deleted almost immediately after they hit that queue, and others who never had theirs deleted, even after it was queued to be.

The only thing worse than a bad policy is an inconsistent one.

In my experience I've never seen a character removed due to inactivity.

If you don't "delete" your characters when you quit the game, and instead simply disable the play online IDs associated with the account but leave the characters "in existence", I don't believe they'll ever, barring very extreme circumstances, get deleted.

I have had my character permanently deleted after just a short time period (a month or so) of not playing as a result of me selecting to actually delete my character the first time I quit. They were unable to recover this character. I started a fresh character which I've played on-and-off many times over the years and never had it removed because I no longer choose the option to "delete" my character when I leave the game.

I'm guessing you deleted your character as well, so hopefully that bit of info helps someone in the future avoid running into this situation.

If you check this guy's previous posts, he hasn't has his account active in 6-7 years, even before the first server merges. I remember way back at launch the ToS said something about deleting your character after 2 years. Given how long it's been since his character was active, and 2 rounds of server merges, plus the deprecation of the old style POL log in, I can comprehend how his data got lost. It still sucks though.

It still shouldn't happen. If they deleted his account due to inactivity then they're just misers when it comes to data storage. If his account was lost due to any of the above factors then they were careless. If they have no means of recovery then that's just freaking stupid. There's no way they come out of this looking like a well run operation.

Yeah, I know $hit happens, and sometimes data really is lost and unrecoverable, but it never looks good when it happens on the corporate side.
