hard drive gone badFollow

I need help! For starters, I purchased FFXI online 2 yrs ago and downloaded the game onto my laptop without a disc. Now the hard drive on my laptop has gone bad and it needs to be replaced. I am almost certain I cannot copy the files from the hard drive to another so is there any other way I can download the game onto another hard drive?

I think if you have the codes and remember your info from the site you originally downloaded the game from, you should in theory be able to download it as many times as you like.
If it came with an installer, then you can save the file to an external HD to back it up once you have managed to download it.

Failing that, you can buy a new SoA ultimate collection and have all the expantions but this will mean starting again unless you know your FFXI codes and login info.

I know my login info to playonline and SE. Just dont think I can access the files on the old HD. If I can locate them on the old one is it difficult to transfer to a knew HD?

It's honestly not worth trying to copy the files over. I'd say just re-download it again and reinstall. You'll have a sizeable update to do, but it's less headache than trying to get everything copied properly from a malfunctioning HD. Assuming you didn't backup macros to the server recently, that's all you'd really lose. Your POL ID and password are all you'll need to get back up and running.

Cool thanks for the help guys! One last question, do I have to pay for a new game or can I download it for free from playonline since thats where I originally bought and downloaded the game from?

I've never purchased anything directly from PlayOnline, but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't just re-download it. I've had FFXI installed on half a dozen places in my time here and never had to pay extra, other than for new expansions.

Hopefully someone with PlayOnline-purchase experience can chime in and explain how to access previous purchases.

Hi-
If you saved the e-mail link from SE/Digital River, you can use that link to re-download the game. That's what I did.

I had my laptop hard drive die a few days ago, pulled the old drive out, placed it in a refrigerator for a few hours, put it back in the laptop, and managed to copy the playonline folder before the hard drive died again. I had to use the e-mail link for the Seekers of Adoulin to download and install the SoA expansion. Included in that download file were ALL the game expansions. Still had to download most of the patches so you'll be stuck with some updating.

oh, I bought a new 500gb laptop hard drive from newegg for $48. just make sure to get the 2.5 inch hard drive and not the 3.5 inch one.

You're probably best off reinstalling--I've been going through a similar experience with computer problems this weekend too.

I believe you can download the "Ultimate" edition for free from the SE website, which includes everything up to WoTG. Also, if you are able to access your old hard drive, copy the User folder. This folder contains all macros as well as config settings for all characters. You can just replace the User folder on a new install with that and recover all of your settings and macros.
