wanna be RNGFollow

#1 Jan 09 2014 at 6:22 AM Rating: Good
Hi, in the years ive played ffxi ive allways wanted to be ranger but never did. I been wanting to more than ever this time around but it seems abit impossible. Ammo is very scarce so I thought I might make my own but ingredients seems just as illusive. Am I missing something? I heard rangers are now not wanted which I find sad but even so ammo for other jobs or rng for fun?
I checked a few servers on FfxiAH and seems the same Asura.

Does that mean rng is deado? Looks like a visvious circle not popular so no ammo, no ammo no rng :(
Arrows are available at some shops, is it worth playing rng with shop bought arrows or should I move on?

Thanks.

At level 99 ranger get's a very potent recycle trait by default, which you can further enhance with merits. The base value at lvl 99 is 55%, and each merit will increase it's activation rate by 5%, up to 25% with 5 merits for an 80% activation rate. The recycle cap is 90%, so you would then only need 10 more points in equipment to cap out, and even without that's 4/5 shots that you take which won't consume ammo. The current ammo to use at 99 is the Adlivun arrow which you can purchase for delve points at an exchange rate of 99 arrows for 5K plasm (50 plasm per arrow) after you defeat either the T4 or T5 Delve NMs in Foret De Hennetiel (the oboron is way easier than the crab), or the high quality Achiyalabopa arrow which you have to defeat Duakuwaqa to purchase and will cost 300 plasm per arrow. The relic cap gives a 25% recycle rate boost by itself, and once you get the +2 version and finish the dynamis experience trial it enhances recycle by adding a static 1 tp per merit to each shot you get (this is independent of store tp; it's a direct increase), so 5 recycle merits plus the relic cap increases your tp return by 5 for every shot recycle activates on (9 out of 10). I have 5 recycle merits and I use the cap to create a tp build that can hit 100% tp in 3 shots 80% of the time given my recycle rate and the save tp trait ranger also gets by default (25% activation rate plus the light belt I weaponskill in is a total of 33% save tp). Additionally, a lot of rangers prefer to melee to build tp rather than shoot on most things, so they'll be using a dagger build to get tp as well.

Long story short, ranger isn't dead. It's just very ammo independant at 99, and plays completely differently from it does during the level up phase in which it is very ammo intensive.

Riky, just buy whatever cheap ammo you can find from an npc, get your trust NPCs and then go to town. The trust NPCs will help you finish stuff off so you don't need to worry about having particularly good ammo - just shoot for skill ups and let the NPCs do the main part of the killing.

I feel for you on the delve ammo though as no one at all does delve NQ bosses anymore as far as I've seen. I still don't have orobon/crab and I've never seen a shout for one.

There are some options for non-hardcore Rangers at the moment. 1st priority is to stack up on Recycle Merit and Scout hat+2 with recycle enhancement. This will put you into the range of 90% activation rate and gives you 5TP every time recycle activates and you only spend 10 ammo for every 100 shots. You can't reach 100% recycle since you will lose an arrow every now and then. This is esp true for multiple shots WS. 2nd, you can stack on Scavenge merit to get back the ammo you failed to recover using Recycle. You can get about 50% of the ammo you used in an area with every time you use Scavenge. With Artifact+1 you can reach 81% recovery rate. Combined these then you spend roughly 3 ammo per 100 shots. All together, you can expect a single stack of ammo will last a couple thousand shots before you need another stack.

For ammo, you need to beat the T4 or T5 Delve NM in Foret De Henneteil. These NMs require a solid party or alliance but they aren't very hard even when your whole party only have eminent equipments. It costs 50 plasm per ammo. There are 4 ways to earn plasm. #1 method is to fight in fractures with your friends. You can get 70k+ plasm per hour with a very good linkshell. #2 method is to farm the Yggrete Shards by killing the mobs that drop them. Each will give you about 100~150 plasm. #3 method is to farm the outside delve NMs. Some NMs are easier to beat than others and a small party can effectively farm a single NM over and over. You get about 500 plasm per NM. #4 method is to do the timed challenges record of eminence every time it pops up. You can do about 2-3 of them per day depending on your play time and each will give you 1 copper voucher which can be traded for 1,000 plasm.

For non-rare/ex ammo options, you will need multiple crafting mules unless you can contract some high level crafters. For arrow, you will need clothcraft, Bonecraft and Woodworking. Most materials can be farmed with a Thf. For bullets, you will need blacksmithing and alchemy. However, materials are harder to come by as you will need to do some mining for the ores. Having Synergy will triple your products given the same amount of materials.

Thanks for the replys, thats really great info. Ive never reached end game or higher levels in my experiences but I think maybe this time especially with how things have changed. I sure have alot to learn. Would be nice with how things are and how things have changed to make things like ammo crafting alot more practical but there we go.
I dont think realistically with what time I have to play that ill be able to craft what I need but i think I will buy what I can where I can and make the best of it.
Ive just unlocked RNG so ill look forward to get started.
Thanks all
