If you do upgrade to Windows 8.1 Turn on Direct Play under Legacy Features before starting up FFXI.

Perg; I know. I don't use that travesty of a op system either.

But for those that are stuck with it, I think it's good advice.

The first time I ran FFXI under Win 8 I got a popup window saying the game needs Direct Play to continue. Fortunately I could install it from the popup window.

INSTALLING FINAL FANTASY XI ON WINDOWS 8.1 ENTERPRISE x64

*edit* the exhaustive guide I wrote for this is now obsolete lol. live tiles no longer break when ffxi is installed, and .net 3.5 and directplay are automatically prompted for install by windows now. same thing with windows 10 by the way. all good. :)

directplay and .net 3.5 had to be installed before any updates whatsoever on a fresh OS install. for a long winded guide on how to do so please scroll down. mad props to you thinktank for helping my solve my crashing tiles problem. and yes, windows 8.1 is an upgrade. a lovely one at that. my desktop and laptop are running better than ever. just has a few kinks like every new OS. or Obamacare lol.

*edit* this is no longer the case. any thing can be installed at any time and nothing breaks anymore.

DirectPlay is a built-in Windows feature. If you're running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you can right-click the Windows icon, select "Programs and Features", select "Turn Windows Features On or Off" from the left navigation pane, then expand the tree beside "Legacy Components", and check the box for DirectPlay.

NOTE: I've run into a slight problem with FFXI Config Tool on a Windows 10 VM (parallels) where it does not allow me to change the resolution. Clicking on the resolution/display tab freezes the tool. So you're stuck playing it in PS2 view (for lack of a better description). But the game DOES work on Windows 10.

Haven't had any problems with latest (10130) build. I did have a problem with an earlier build with the configuration program not being available from the menu. Had to run it from inside the playonline folder.
