Meatballsub Returns (Yet Another FFXI Returning Thread)Follow

Hello!

I just thought i'd drop in and say "hi". I've had an on and off relationship with FFXI over the years, but I'm hoping to be here again for a long time. I just purchased the game on Steam, and am very excited about starting it up again!

For those that don't remember me, I played FFXI at launch and had a 60 DRG on Diabolos, and then quit around the time vanilla WoW came out. I've come back several times over the years to experience some of the new stuff added to the game. My goal is to finally have a character reach the level cap in at least one job, and I will be starting completely from scratch.

I am also responsible for writing a couple of mining guides for FFXI on this site, though I'm guessing these are probably terribly outdated at this point. Perhaps I will update these in the future though.

I finally shook the "WoW" bug a little over a year ago and have no intentions of ever returning. I also played FFXIV through my trial period but found myself not wanting to log in after that. Part of me wonders if that is because my heart has always been with FFXI, as it was the first real MMO that I ever really got into (besides Diablo II, but that's a different story). I know that the game as a whole has seen better days and that the community is much smaller than before, but I'm still confident that I will have a fun time here once again.

I've always played on Diabolos, but I heard that it was merged with another server. Because of that and the fact that I'm starting fresh, I believe I will give a new server a try. I'm thinking about trying Odin, as the Steam community seems to have a strong presence there, but I'm open to other suggestions.

If you haven't played the game since level 60, you'll at least have a very good time with the missions and getting known with people on FFXI is easier than on other MMOs (never really made any friends in other MMOs when I think about it).

Thanks for the replies! I'm having a blast so far, but I'm always amazed at the sheer amount of content added each time I revisit the game. It is a bit overwhelming, honestly, but I'm looking forward to experiencing it all.

I have noticed that mining doesn't seem to be a real money maker anymore. I've heard about the ability to gather from a private area in Adoulin, is this correct? Is this the reason for a drastic decrease in ore/log prices?

Also, what level should I be trying to do some of the new expansion stuff? I'm assuming most of it is for high/capped characters? I appreciate the help.

Thanks, that does make sense. I see that many ores still sell quite frequently, just not for near as much as they used to. I'm guessing this is partially due to lack of demand as well as other ways to obtain them, maybe? On Odin you generally see dozens of high end ores up for grabs, and they sell quick, but they only go for a 1-2k gil these days.

Mining has still been good to me with my newly made character, so I'm not complaining too much. I guess I just hoped that sneak mining was still a viable way to make money later on in the game. It might be, but it doesn't look that way at this point.
