Gone a few years, coming back?Follow

Good morning!

Let me preface this post by my following statement:
I am coming back because I want to play summoner.

In all the mmos ive played (ffxiv included) ffxi summoner is still my favorite class/role/niche. For whatever reason, I love the class and I love the way its played in FFXI. DPS, healing, burst damage is all irrelevant to me. Why? Because predator claws.

Thats why.

Anyways, after being severely disappointed in the FFXIV summoner class Im taking a look at resubbing ffxi just to tinker around with summoner for a while. I came back a year or so ago and started fooling around in abyssea (reaching new level cap etc) and found that it was nearly impossible to get the missing atmas as I had missed out on the heyday (sp?) of abyssea. I would stand around in town for hours looking for shouts and didnt really get much accomplished. I of course (being the summoner I am) would go out to solo, but with the implementation of the limit/magic/melee skills needed to 'break' monsters or whatever it was called I couldn't get the drops I needed. Or I was watched by groups of JP's and /laughed at as I got solo roflstomped by the various NM's needed.

Two questions:

1. With the new xpac is it possible to make progress on these things as a solo summoner? Ive checked the ffxiah shout section every now and then and dont really see alot going on.

2. Did the new xpac just make all of Abbyssea irrelevant anyways?

Thanks in advance all! I am more than willing to transfer to a new world that seems active just so that I may glean a few last months of stomping things to death with my more than willing avatars!

Summoner is actually very strong in the new expansion. They're the preferred job for the big HNMs called Nakuuls, and a solo SMN can do very well in the low level content called reives. (Probably the only job that does better is BST since they can sic their pets while invisible.)

SE added a special RA item called the Dashavatara Sachet for summoner that allows avatars to be considered Level 113 in all areas of the world. They've also included pet attack and pet MAB augments on the new Skirmish mage gear. SMN does well in Skirmish, too! (Well, all jobs are welcome in skirmish.)

Abyssea is still the best place to go for leveling, and solo SMN with the Dasahvatar Sachet can do very well there.

I kinda hate to hijack this, but any other thread that's a bit closer to my situation would result in a necropost.

First, I'm new. Well, not really, since I did a 14-day trial of this in... 2008? I think. At any rate, I decided to actually spend some cash and subscribe for real.

I started (again) in May as a WHM, and I'm planning on my endgame being WHM. I have a friend on my server who was helping me with important things (limit break quests, AF gear, missions) when A Realm Reborn came out. And now, said friend has abandoned FFXI for... at least 3 months now. Strangely enough, he insists on doing the missions with me, and has even gone so far as to request that I pass on Delkfutt's Tower until we would be ready to tackle CoP. So I've played along with this for awhile now, but there's only so much I can do solo. Or so little, given my job choice.

Ignoring my questionable situation (yes, I am beginning to doubt my friend is going to return to help with missions) with my friend which has brought my mission progress to a halt, what could I potentially get help with?

I'm currently lvl 65, having done my limit break quest to continue to 70, and I suppose at this point I should take advantage of this free Abyssea event while it's on its last legs. The thing is, my absentee friend has really yet to explain anything about Abyssea, and any reading about it I have done has just confused me. I really don't want to just go in and get myself stuck not knowing what to do, but I have zero connections on my server (Phoenix) other than... guess who?

I'm a little concerned about lvling without much skill training, and I HAVE managed to bring my skills in almost all areas to at least 130 or so just from testing the waters of what I could or couldn't possibly solo. I'm particularly concerned when it comes to my upcoming limit break fight with Maat.

I've taken it on myself to attempt nearly every quest I could find just to pass the time, but I'm also somewhat stuck there as well as I'm stuck with quests now that are a) completely not worthwhile to take on, b) taking place primarily in expansion areas, c) beyond my capacity to solo at this lvl (and possibly any lvl as a WHM), or d) any combination of those.

I'm think I'm fairly up to my lvl cap spells-wise, although I'm a bit weaker on my current sub (BLM), so I guess I'm okay there. The lack of Aspir is kind of annoying for completionist mind to look at, though.

If you were on Cerberus we could help each other out. I played from 2002-2007 and recently came back myself - unfortunately on a brand new character (actually it may have been 2003 when I started). Basically, everything that came out after Wings of the Goddess is new to me as well, but I've done an absolute TON of research to get caught up as much as possible on what the latest content are all about. If I were you, I would definitely take full advantage of the Atma/Abyssea free stuff before that expires, as well as redeeming any Log-in Campaign points for nice items (I'd research what these items are first before making the exchange). I was able to nab a pair of Monster Gaiters for my upcoming BST as well as acquire 10 Ferine Body seals for my Empyrean piece through this campaign event.

Despite playing daily, I'm a casual player now (as opposed to my first tenure when I was playing non-stop hardcore), so my progress is slower than someone who is playing all day long, but like you I have a need to complete the older content again (in my case all of it).
