Hey, folks,

I was reminded about the change in payment requirements that SE made a few years ago. So, before I get all excited about coming back I need to make sure I can pay for it without headaches. As I was creating my SE account I noticed information about Crysta. Now I've read up about what it is as an alternative form of payment (here on the forums), but I'm not positive I read whether you can use a regular visa/mastercard debit card to purchase Crysta, or if it still has to be that secure Verified by Visa thing.

By the way, is the purchase of Crysta even necessary? Did they reinstate allowing regular credit cards again? I don't recall if I read the answer to that anywhere. I can use Paypal if need be for Crysta, but I thought I'd ask.

Thank you

It's not necessary but Crysta;

* Lets you prepay for a few months if you wish
* Is basically a form of prepaid debit card, but it's a currency.
* If you want to help a friend, you can buy a Ultimate Card and give it to them so they can use it to pay for FFXI/XIV via using that to buy crysta (I ASSUME XIV too since it's the same system)

That's what it's for. ^^ Oh and you can buy with a debit/credit card. NP with that. You may not want to (and go with direct pay) since you have to remember to add crysta but there you go.

Hey there, maryadavies,

Thank you for responding! After reading through all the secure card situation it seems things got rather complicated a few years ago for payment. It's nice to see the paying experience is back to normal (hopefully!).

SE's way of processing credit card's directly often causes headaches for all. When you first enter a credit card their processor will do a $.01 charge on your card, most card companies now will block those and send of a flag for fraud. So SE will deny the card, and will prevent you from adding or changing cards for about a day, if not longer. Also even you do get an account activated with a credit card, their processor can still ***** up and the subscription can be canceled for lack of payment. Also good luck getting through to SE's customer service over the matter. Best advice, buy crysta via paypal, then you don't have to put up with any of the above issues (or volumes, since it is SE.)

UltimatePay also lets you purchase Crysta via PayPal, e.g. right out of your checking account, which also bypasses the whole Secured card mess.

No problem! And yeah, it got to be a real mess for a while. I'm glad direct pay is back. (tho I went to crysta via UltimatePay a while back b/c of some RL stuff I'd rather not go into that didn't work out but I'm not mad, so I know how crysta works)

At least it's simple now. ^^ I'm also one of the few that had np with their new credit card system and I got LUCKY with ClickAndCry tho my brother got a international charge with them (we changed over to direct pay once it was avail since we had to change the credit card anyway).

Also everyone else is right; You can use paypal with ultimatepay to buy crysta too tho I just use my debit card though UltimatePay. Strangely there's no secured card mess on UltimatePay at all, I don't know why. ^^ (Note, my "bank" is actually a credit union; It has been for a while now since Wells Fargo threatened to charge for debit cards..I heard a rumor that they were forcing free checking customers from Wachovia to go to their paid checking, yuck..I'm glad I'm no longer with them)

What Wells Fargo did was start charging you a $5 a month fee if you didn't have direct deposits of at least $500 a month. The two months I was in between jobs I got hit with the fee and it was annoying since I had a good bit more than that still in the checking account, but now I avoid the fee and I'm back to 100% free checking.

Same with the savings account. As long as you maintain at least $300 in it, they charge you nothing (and it accrues interest instead.) Drop below $300 for a single day in a month and bam, $5 fee.

Cat; since my income is seriously irregular (don't ask) I'm glad I'm not with Wells Fargo anymore. I would of been hit with that fee all the time since I don't have a direct deposit; I go and deposit checks from what odd jobs I can get. There's no direct deposit with that; so I'd have to pay the fee.

I'm luvvin' the credit union I found tho; no surprise fees and they're a lot friendlier. The only downside is they are associated with Georgia State and we're Georgia Tech fans. /laugh. That's minor though and I just won't donate to GA State when they run that donation drive. I also get interest on my checking account with that credit union; it's not much but it's something. ^^

I'd have problems with both of those being a UGA fan. Smiley: lol

I totally understand that a credit union is a better fit for many people. Just that the dire predictions of massive fees from Wells Fargo never materialized. Thankfully my new job pays a lot more than the last one did (and doesn't seem to mind my ZAM addiction) so I avoid the fee several times over from a single direct deposit.

You wouldn't have teh minor quibble that I have with that credit union actually, Cat. When I say GA State, I mean UGA. (And they run a donation drive for UGA every year since before they opened it to all GA residents; it used to be just for the profs there. That, I ignore. ^^ GA State is a older name for UGA.) Oh and I'm not going to do the usual GA Tech warcry here; You like the Bulldogs, I like the GA Tech Yellowjackets, let's not argue over sports teams Smiley: lol

I'm glad Wells Fargo didn't get that bad but, because of my situation; I'd rather stick with my credit union, thanks. Smiley: smile

Georgia State is actually an entirely separate university - UGA in Athens has always been UGA, but Georgia State is in ATL like GA Tech.

Funny, they're all part of The University System of GA, which is separate from the Technical College System of GA (despite GA tech being Ga tech.)

To further add confusion there is now the University of North Georgia.

Georgia Southern is at least distinctive. Is there a university of east Georgia?

Last I heard there was a 2 year school called East Georgia College (I think, I'd have to check my transcript since I went there for a while); I don't know if they did what they did to West Georgia and made it a four year school.

Oh and if you're curious why I'm a Yellowjackets fan; I had 2 brothers gradutate from there; I couldn't help but get it; not to mention West GA isn't really a sports school. ^^

Hey guys,

Quick question:

My game arrived today and I'm picking up my new Xbox later as well. Since the game (presumably) comes with a free 30-day trial period, will I be required to go through the payment setup process as well during the registration process? I plan on using Paypal, but the funds I've transferred wont be deposited into my account until tomorrow. I was hoping to get online tonight (with the free trial) if the downloads (updates, etc) don't take too long. It wont kill me to have to wait until tomorrow at which time I will properly set up my Paypal financing.

Thanks!

You should be able to set it up to use PayPal without the funds being there. I think. Just like a credit card you'll need to enter the information ahead of time, but you can wait until you get the email notice from SE that the bill is coming due to actually convert the money to Crysta.

Hey Catwho,

Thanks for the info. I'll certainly give it a go and see what happens. :)

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm looking at the business end of 20,000 files to download. I guess I wont be playing tonight after all, lol.

Hey guys,

Is there a particular reason why Ultimate Pay is saying they can't process my Paypal transaction at this time? I have a verified and confirmed Paypal account and the fund are there. I'm wondering if there's a transaction fee associated with using the Ultimate Pay service. I've already set up my FFXI/PlayOnline registration with a card (for now) so I can play the game, but I was wanting to use Paypal once the 30-day trial period is over.

Thanks for any info.
#21 Sep 27 2013 at 11:06 AM Rating: Good
I never paid any transaction fees when using Ultimate Pay via PayPal.

I'd get in touch with UltimatePay - SE has set the customer service bar so low you'll probably get much more help simply by contacting UP directly. Smiley: rolleyes

No, there should be no fees either way (I don't get any using my credit card, and I don't think paypal's any different)

You MIGHT want to see if you got a credit card around and try that to get your crysta, or RUN to the store and pick you up a Ultimate Card. Both will work. But yeah, This has the ultimate pay number on it; they REALLY don't want you to call them.. I recently had to contact them b/c I lost my debit card Smiley: bah so had to change my information everywhere. Ultimate Pay doesn't let you change the CC on file on their site, Smiley: bah, so had to contact'em. The rest of the info in that thread does not pertain to FFXI, but the phone number does. Once you get a live person, tell them "I need to talk to someone from Playspan or Ultimate Pay" and you'll get to the right person.

They were really helpful; they pulled the card off my account; I can't buy crysta without buying a Ultimate Card for 2 weeks, but since I got another month's worth of crysta on the account right now, that's no handicap. I'll proly be buying more near the end of October. ^^

Thank you for the helpful info, guys. Yeah, it's puzzling but I probably wont bother with Ultimate Pay via Paypal. I'll either use a card for Crysta or just keep things the way they are (normal CC use).

Much appreciated!
