Balancing XI and XIVFollow

#1 Aug 23 2013 at 10:02 PM Rating: Good
I suppose this is a question more directed towards Catwho as she posted to a thread specifically stating her intentions to continue to play both games, as do I.

Who here is planning on playing both games? I'd like to continue to do so, but I'm curious how you guys plan on balancing that out? What do you plan to continue to do in XI? Are you going to take a short hiatus and return once you've experienced the content in XIV? How do you forsee this working?

I'm being hopeful in the endeavor that I'll continue to play XI equally as much as I play XIV -- I'm just having trouble determining what that will look like for ME specifically. I'm hoping hearing your ideas will contribute to what I'll end up doing myself.

XIV is considerably more casual friendly than XI is, which helps!

I'm down to 3 fairly loose "event nights" on FFXI. I plan on sticking with my Neo Nyzul Isle static (although that may have suddenly morphed into a Yorcea Skirmish static) and with my Abyssea/Meebles group. That leaves 3 nights to play on XIV (along with my 1 dedicated "no video games" night - Fridays.)

I still have things I want to do in XI.

It is totally impossible to play 2 mmos, you haven't learned this yet. You will. I told myself this so many times and it never works.

You start out fine alternating your playtime, as time goes on you start to favour one over the other and slowly you log on less and less to the less favoured one.

You simply cannot play 2 mmos in any meaningful way for more than a few months. One will always override the other, to the point you will stop logging onto the lesser.

You *can* play other MMOs with EVE with little consequence. Besides maybe having your POS swarmed by TEST while offline. My only concern is that your progression in FFXI and XIV (while playing both of them) would be somewhat anaemic.

I won't be playing both 11 and 14, but I can agree with what Preludes said.
I did try to balance online games in the past, but as s/he said; you will in the end stick with either A or B.

I happened when I played THPS4 (Tony Hawk 4) and FFXI. I eventually logged on to THPS4 one last time to say good bye to the people I had got to know (this is before myspace/facebook where we could have maybe stayed in touch).

It also happened with FFXI, twice.

ATM I play WoW, and as my thread over in 14's forums suggest...that game is looking and sounding better to me the more info I get.

Sure I could afford both, but it all comes down to time. If time is nothing to you, and you have all the time in the world, best of luck and it might work out. Someone who only has a few hours a night to play a game, if they choose to do so, it is very hard to juggle 2 games. You will just find yourself leaning towards one.

I'm in a similar boat with EVE, though I've written EVE off at this point -- I'm in a PvP corp that's going nowhere anytime fast and I've just lost interest in EVE over the last 8 or so years. It just doesn't have the same appeal that it did back then.

I do like Catwho's method and I may try that for a week or two to see how it goes. No harm can be done -- it's not like I'm paying $100 for a sub.

I'll agree you cannot play two MMOs at more than a casual level.

I played XI hardcore for many years. I had lots of fun and got a lot of goodies. I also had a lot of stress, drama, and ******** to deal with as a result. At this point, my XI character is fully fleshed out. I have a relic bard and a delve THF. I can log in, look for a shout I feel like doing, visit my mog garden and NPC all the crap I get, and log out feeling like I accomplished something. I'm capped on merits for 20 jobs. I've finished all four old expansions (except captain rank grrr) and the six mini expansions. At this point, I log on mostly to hang out with friends rather than to accomplish any big goal (other than Dharp 90, which I'll get eventually.)

I want to do the Adoulin expansion storyline, but I don't want a huge commitment to a big endgame shell ever again. XI lets me do that these days. I'm finally at the point in my life where spending $50/month on sub fees for a video game doesn't hurt my budget. (That's what getting a master's degree gets ya!) I will probably drop my second XI account one of these.... months, maybe.

One of these days I'll log out of XI for the last time. That won't be for many years, I suspect.

Easiest way to balance the two games is to drop XI and stick to XIV.

I suppose it depends on how serious you take playing those games. FFXI is my main game, but I also dabble in DCUO. However, DC is only once or twice a week and not for long periods of time. It is just something I do when I want a change or to ***** around on and am not worried about long term commitment to my characters. This could just be because its f2p but not finishing something in this game is no consequence.

For people like Catwho who've accomplished a lot in XI and don't need to join a delve/skirmish/Aby/Dyna/etc run every night, then I think you can play both games just fine.

Right now, FFXIV is new and exciting. There is a lot to do, so you'll be spending most of your free time exploring Eorzea. And during this time you'll probably spend very little time as your XI avatar. But it won't be long before you'll have finished every quest, beaten every dungeon, and are waiting for new content to come out in XIV that you'll be bored, yes bored. Never mind the server outages and constant emergency maintenance we're experiencing now, and will for many more weeks-months to come I expect. But there you are, bored, what to do? Why jump back into XI of course. Get caught up on the latest content SE has added. Grab the latest gear upgrades, catch up with old friends, get busy exploring Vana'diel again. The more you play XI, the less you'll love XIV.

Then you'll either get all caught up with XI or SE will have come out with new content for XIV and off you go to the other game again! You'll flip-flop back and forth every few months. And you'll be happy. I know, it's what I did during XIV 1.0 through 2.0 beta. Having another game to fall back on when your (current) main game is unavailable is very beneficial.

Yes you don't have time to play both full time, I agree, but not everyone needs to play both full time. Some of us ol' timers are happy with our progress in XI, but not ready to quit yet. There are still a few things on the To Do list we need to cross off first, but are in no rush to do so. So like Catwho, and others, you'll see us in both games I'm sure.

And another option, for those of you with a decent PC like I have, you can actually have both games running at the same time. No more need to choose, just play both.

If you have no job, no school, no visitors, and very few responsibilities, I could see juggling two MMO's, but I can say from experience that if you have any of those things, it's not worth your time, effort, or expense to do so. For the first couple months it will be fun, but eventually one game will float to the top and become your focus (probably ff14) and you'll end up doing one heavily for a couple months, then maybe revisiting the other for a couple months, but both at the same time (as in alternating days) just gets tedious.

It can be done, so don't get me wrong, it's possible, it's just most likely not your best option.

I recommend instead only subscribing to one at a time and then going back and forth as desired (for me this was every few months or so).

Now, a NON-MMO and an MMO can be juggled very easily and is quite reasonable. For example, I played Tribes 2 heavily when I first started FFXI and played them both at the same time. Later it was substituted with other FPS games and they really did a nice job of breaking up the "MMO grind".

Balancing the two games will be extremely easy. Every time you try to log in to FFXIV you will get an error stating that your "world is full, please try again later". Then you can go log in to XI and actually play a game. Repeat as necessary.

The real trick will be figuring out how to pay both subscription fees while only being able to play one game. That one will take practice. Luckily, they aren't charging a sub fee for XIV for the first few weeks so you won't have to begin paying to not play that game for a while while you adjust.

I can and do play both games, although I favor FFXIV at the moment because it is so shiny and new. I have a character on FFXI that I have been playing since the NA release and I once said she would be a part of me until the servers went down for good, that hasn't changed.

Hey, me too! Technically 0 hours a week for FFXI and 0 hours a week for FFXIV is a perfect balance!

I feel a lot more balanced - and my bank account is more balanced.

Wouldn't that depend on what you replace MMOs with? It's a very inexpensive hobby.

Been playing Faster than Light which I got in a humble bundle for 5 bucks (with many other games, of course!)

And Rogue Legacy, which I got for around 10ish. So, it's not a tremendous savings (basically saved like $13 bucks) but unlike the MMO - I get to keep those games forever. Really though, if I never bought another video game I probably own enough of them to stay busy for the rest of my life if I needed... and I it wasn't like I stopped buying them when playing the MMO/s - so it's arguably not even a cost... since I buy Humble Bundles pretty religiously these days.

I also have been reading more library books (free!) - and if I really felt hard up I could maybe actually use the crunchy roll sub I am paying for - or netflix (which I almost never have time to watch).

I agree though, a pay to play MMO is arguably one of the best "bang for your buck" spends of entertainment dollars, and the sub isn't really a factor for me in real life. It's more like the time I don't have combined with the lack of desire to play (lack of friends in XI - lack of interest generally in XIV)
