Can not play on Windows 8 ?Follow

#1 Aug 21 2013 at 2:41 PM Rating: Decent
Recently I installed windows 8 and now I can not play FFXI. Every time I try to open POL Viewer, I get the following message;

Error Code = 20008003
Play Online Viewer could not run under current operating system.

The thing that really sucks is, it worked fine on Vista, but for college, I needed to install Office and it didn't work with Vista. So I had to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 for it(MS Office 360) to work on my PC. So thinking it wouldn't matter, I picked 8 cause it's newer. Now I am stuck. Any suggestions of how to fix this? Or is it looking like I will need to downgrade to Windows 7 ? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Windows 8 is an abomination. You should upgrade to Window 7.

I ran FFXI on Windows 8 fine. Have you downloaded the POL viewer for Windows 7?

I hate to say it, but FFXI will work on Windows 8, 32 and 64-bit versions. You MUST download the Windows 7 version of PlayOnline from playonline.com and use it instead of ANY OTHER INSTALL for it to work. You can install the game and expansion packs normally.

Thanks a lot all who replied, I will try getting the Windows 7 viewer from the site and see what happens. Will post results afterwards.

Make sure you turn off smart screen while playing in windowed mode. That stuff crashes the client when it pops up.

Nice, the 7 viewer works just fine. It's currently updating to the newest version. Not looking forward to redoing all those macros, lol, but at least I can play again. Thanks again. Also, thanks for the heads up about smart screen, just disabled it.

Glad to see it worked.

The #1 thing to remember about the abomination known as Windows 8 is that the Windows key exists on all IBM keyboards, just like the open apple/command key does on Mac keyboards, and on Win8 it controls the universe. Use it to toggle from Metro back to desktop instantly. Also, just start typing in any program name you want while on the Metro/Start screen, and it will appear. You can still pin your most used stuff to the taskbar on desktop (I have XI pinned there, and soon XIV) and between the search menu and the task bar, you never have to click a tile.

You mean like Windows 7 already did, right? ;D

Right. You knew that and I knew that, but 90% of new Windows 8 years stare blankly at you when you tell them that's what they need to do, because no one ever really used that feature that much in WIn 7.

Absolutely. Plus, there's that whole thing where nobody can post anything in any topic on Alla without Raelix posting some snarky, belittling, insulting reply to try to make himself seem superior to anyone and everyone else. Such a sad little guy. He really needs a hug.

None of that Willy. It's like you're just asking to start something by calling him out like that. *shakes his head*

He could at least keep up with the fact that Cat and I had a humorously similar discussion just three days prior.

I have run both FF games on WIN 8 (64-bit) with no trouble. However, the first time I ran it Win 8 gave a popup that said something called Direct Play needed to be installed. Still. Either download the Vista version of POL and manually install the game and expansions or buy a copy of FFXI Ultimate edition which will work with Viata and later without any special installation
.
