New graphic card, graphical issues with FFXI.Follow

For the record, I've tried:

...Rolling back the drivers to older version.
...Reinstalling FFXI (it's going though update hell right now.)

I think people know I got a new pc built recently. The only trouble is..

I've been having some artifacts on certain chara models and some gear. With the chara models, it's the close cropped spikeyish hair taru and the long white haired elvaan. Gear, it's MOSTLY newer gear I get the flickering/garbage on. It is also MUCH worse in aby/desert areas. Here's what I mean; this was done right after the driver revert. Here's my speccy readout; done before I did driver revert but should give you guys the right info.. I'm running the 326.41 driver right now. (On the advice of a Nivida tech)

Is there any remedy to this mess? I'd like to be able to play without getting annoyed by excessive artifacts. ^^ Well, if the reinstall doesn't work..

I've seen similar on an old friend's PC, though it usually involved certain terrain elements.

Basic rundown aside from rollback and reinstall:
- File check? (Though a clean install may as well be the same)
- Manually installed older DirectX versions? Windows likes to assume what you have is good enough. Think XI needs DX8 if I remember right.
- Did you do any manual registry editing? If so, you might've borked something.
- Proper POL version for your OS?
- Problem exist without Windower (official or otherwise)? From what I've heard, the "new" Windower has a nasty habit of wanting to "optimize" things for you that may cause performance issues.
- Configure the Nvidia Control Panel to let the game handle graphics instead of by default?
- Punt the offending taru? You can never punt enough taru.

Edit: Do you remember which retro-driver version you used? I'll try to do a bit of digging to see if I can find the version people used to cure other issues, but another part of me fears compatibility with such a newer card.

Edit2: Older post I see mentions driver 8.5.0.2696 solving their issues, but I'm still digging to find the specific Nvidia bundle that'd correlate to. Might simply be 269.6x version, but seriously don't take my assumption on that. I'd try things from 2009 or so if you're gonna start cherrypicking random packs.

Okay, running a beta driver atm on the advice of the Nivida tech btw, Here's the screen of that.

And I use official windowed mode; I pretty much play plain vanilla FFXI. I'm planning on actually helping Nivida if this doesn't work. Haven't done any reg hacks tho I have been sorely tempted seeing THAT.

And I'll see about having the game handle everything once the update finishes. ^^

And yeah..I usually don't kick taru(I got taru friends) but that particular taru model, yes I wanna punt it!

[Edit] Oh and I didn't install POL from the disks I have since this is windows 7. D/led the windows 7 version from Square's site, THEN installed FFXI and all expansions. ^^
[Second edit] I went ahead and installed the rollup when I first installed Windows, I'll do it again to be sure. Also I'm trying to be careful with drivers; I like playing newer games too!

Did we ever figure out what the "Graphics Stabilization" check box is in the FFXI Config?

I heard that is for older systems.

Anyway still having taru head flicker (That's where I can see it without going into aby, btw; in one aby zone it was on ALL the npcs that give you time/cru buffs/atma) but hopefully this can be run down or I can help Nivida fix it!

Pretty sure you have it backwards. FFXI runs better on old systems. Especially with a video card that does dx8.

true but I guess it's for some cards. Anyway I've managed to reduce the flicker; it might of been a bad install after all. It's not so bad now so I can proly stand it; I was using that paticular taru for a fair test so I know if I'm going to see it elsewhere. ^^

[Edit] Talking to tech now, if we can fix it I'll post solution here.

Ahah! Okay. First off, if you're having issues and have my card..Or newer, for heaven's sake..

Install these beta drivers. My bad these are the latest drivers. THEN..

Bring up the Nivida Control Panel, then change this ONLY for playonline games. This will stop the flickering for the most part. it's still there but it's well, barely there and isn't so aggravating.

I did tell the tech that I'm wiling to help test so we can get this working without any tweaks to settings. ^^

Make sure you have checked the Graphics Stabilization box. This was added awhile back to help new graphics cards.

You need to make some changes in the Nvidia Control panel. The settings there are overriding the POL settings. Open up your Nvidia Control Panel from the Windows Control Panel. On the left, click on the 'Manage 3D Settings'. If you haven't already, add a Program Settings for 'All Play-On-Line Games'.

You'll want to make sure that Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration is set to Single Display performance mode (not SLI or multi-display). I have most of the other settings set to either 'Off' or '3D application controlled'.

Thank you! did both. Hopefully that'll stop it for now. I'm going to send Nivida a bug report after dinner so maybe they can run this down. The chat techs were really helpful and I hope one day we actually have a Nivida profile or something for FFXI that makes it look nice and spiffy on newer cards Smiley: smile

I figure 5 more years, and the game won't run on newer hardware. Always love that, new super pc...can't run a game from 15 years ago cause it'll explode.

Downside of tech evolution and methods employed. Basically think of it why the PS4 can't outright play PS1-3 game discs even though the PS4 is a mechanically superior system to probably all 3 combined. :(

Sadly yes on tech evolution; I hate to think one day we'll have to have a PC just for FFXI. I think they are working on it b/c I figured, I'm not the only one with this problem as well as how they responded to the problem when I asked. I had to downgrade drivers due to the beta drivers crashed my PC; but since it helped, I think next driver update we will have some improvement. ^^

I suggest if you're having this problem; join me in pestering Nivida for a driver fix. Take a fraps vid of the problem (Paid fraps if you can and I hope you didn't pirate it), make sure ya convert it with Handbrake. Then go to http://nvidia-submit.custhelp.com/app/answers/list and tell them the problem, it has a place to upload the video.

The more people that complain, the faster they'll get a fix in.

I remember I ran the game on Pentium 4 with Radeon 9800 Pro in 2004. Considering that people are litterally tossing away hardware like that and thinking it's garbage you could probably get a PC powerful enough to run FFXI for free.

Solo; True. My old pc played it fine tho it did have some artifacts that I could not get rid of. (Jueno, the pole thing in the gateway to the mh) The trouble is and I think a lot of us can say this; I only have room for 1 desktop.

That means I have to play FFXI on this, so I hope there's a driver fix soon, otherwise I'm just going to have to live with it...

Nvidia had a similar issue with drivers and FFXI 2 years ago. It took Nvidia roughly a year to get it corrected and that was with a full thread on their support forums dedicated to the problem. I want to say it hit 60+ pages with an Nvidia rep responding regularly. I had just built this rig to play FF14 at that time, running GTX460s in SLi. I'm still using the same rig and haven't had issues since they fixed the drivers.

I didn't see which card you are using. If it's a semi-older card, I'm leaning toward Nvidia control panel settings. If it's a new card, I'd lean toward driver issues. To be honest, I've never used beta drivers...seems like those break more things than fix. If you want, I can post my Nvidia settings to see if that helps.

Nvidia has also abandoned anymore work on FFXI after that happened, and have said basically to nag SE to update their MMO because they can no longer be bothered to worry about a decade old game working on newer tech. Since SE has taken the same stance despite everyone else taking the time to give their ten year old MMOs facelifts... well....

I hate to say it, but as long as they play FFXI on their archaic PS2's in Japan, there is little motivation for SE care about PC players.

One of these days Sony is going to tell them to GTFO and cut off the PS2 routing servers. I suspect that will probably happen soon after the PS4 comes out, if it is considered a success.

Kind of like how Microsoft has given everyone on XP until April 2014 to upgrade or lose support. Yeah, Windows 8 sucks for some folks (I'm okay with it), but Windows 7 is a damn good operating system and there's no excuse any more. Any application that won't run on Windows 7 is probably old enough to be retired.
