Question about the PS4 Follow

I know the PlayStation 4 won't be backwards compatable, however I'm hearing at some point it'll have some kind of cloud access to the previous game libraries. If that's so, will it be able to access and/or play a DL form of FFXI (if made available), or does this only extend to existing software titles that are currently available as DLs on the PSN? The only rumor I read was about Matsui Sukueni toying with the idea of using the PS4 as a server and Vita as a client or somthing back in march..

Has there been any real talk about what exactly Sony migt do as a work-around with its past titles?

I don't think you'll ever be able to play XI on the PS4.
I don't know about this cloud thing you're talking about, but I presume it concerns PS3 titles. XI is a PS2 title and an online one to boot, so I'd say it's not gonna happen. Keep also in mind that backward compatible PS3 were on the market for a really short period of time and never came back so yea..

This really brings up an issue that I wanted to ask before. Is it theoretically possible to play FFXI from a cloud? I think that would do much good.

Would it be possible in theory? Yes. All you'd need is a cloud based server with virtualized PS2 emulators running in parallel and doling out pre-rendered video and graphics to any device with a Web browser.

Would it be possible as a practical solution? Maybe in Google cities where the broadband has the capacity to handle it. For users on regular cable and DSL, the amount of data throughput would be choking, and the lag would be horrendous. The XI client/server works as it does today because only descriptions of data are sent over the pipes and all the rendering is done on the local machine.

I thought they said previous Playstation titles for all systems would be available in some sort of downloadable form, and that you'd be able to stream your PS4 to your Vita over a local network. But who knows what the reality will be.

Or you could just skip the emulators and run the PC version with a tenth the overhead.

Wait, what? Has Google finally decided to just start taking over the world?

But then it wouldn't be "cloud based" now would it? Besides, the PC version is just a PS2 emulator.

Sort of.

I would expect that if they did any kind of cloud emulation it would most likely be a limited number of titles or require a subscription to offset the costs to provide such a service. Emulation isn't exactly efficient to begin with, not to mention the need for a good business case to provide such a service. Honestly, if you HAVE to have XI on a console, there's always xbox. You could of course just save yourself the trouble, waiting and speculation and just play it on pc.

Gaikai is the cloud-streaming service that Sony is going to be offering with the PS4, and so far it's pretty much all speculation, no one's 100% sure exactly how it will work.

It's pretty unlikely that FFXI will work through it, but they did say that the library of streamable games would span PS1, PS2, and PS3 systems, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. Although even if it can, I can't imagine it really being practical. A game running off of SE's servers, to Gaikai's servers emulating the client, streaming through your PS4, streaming back your input, to the client running on Gaikai, back to SE. I can't imagine that working at capable speeds.
