Question About Buying FFXIFollow

I'm buying the digital download tonight for the new ultimate edition but i'm unsure wether to buy it on Steam or the Square Enix online store.

If I pay and download from SquareEnix and end up having to format my computer, or want to install it on a 2nd machine or something like that, will I be able to download it again for free and just login with my character? Or would I be screwed and have to rebuy the game just to download it again?

If I buy it on Steam I think I can download the game as many times as I want but this message on the official Steam page for FFXI states;
Quote:
Important announcement to owners of FINAL FANTASY XI on Steam

Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, the Seekers of Adoulin standalone expansion pack will not be available for purchase on Steam. However, we're pleased to announce that our fans who have previously purchased a version of FFXI on Steam will be able to purchase the FINAL FANTASY XI: Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition through Steam at a special discounted rate.

So, for those people who had FFXI on Steam, does this mean they had to give up their characters etc if they wanted to play the new content? 'Cos it sure sounds like it..

Any help/insight appreciated.

Your account isn't locked to steam. You can buy the game anywhere login to your Square Enix account and add the codes to your current FFXI game to unlock the new stuff. So buy it someplace you can re-download it in case of emergencies. Or use torrents next time.

Just save the installer on a backup drive if you're worried about it. Otherwise all that matters is that the codes are registered to your account. You can use a torrent or whatever to redownload the installer if you need it. Though really, just burn it on a cd or put it on a flash drive or better yet, set up a backup harddrive

Personally, I bought mine on Amazon. You can always download purchases from their site.
