Old FFXI Vet, Wants to Return Home...Follow

#1 Jul 23 2013 at 1:29 PM Rating: Good
Hi Guys,

I'm an old FFXI Vet, my name was Wolflord on Asura server. I had 75 BLM/BRD/THF/WAR/DRK and I think COR. I remember chain pulling Colibri’s in merit parties. It’s been awhile and COR might have been the most recent L75 job I leveled. I also had several other jobs 60+.

Players I considered my close friends were Kadaaj and Thunder. Kadaaj had multiple jobs but enjoyed SAM as his main, he then switched it to BLM by changing his CoP ring to the mage one. This was probably related to the BLM merit burn parties in ToAU where we killed jellies. Thunder was always a RNG lol. I think he tried leveling other jobs but always went back to RNG. I’m not sure if they even play anymore but if they happen to read this hit me up! I miss you guys!
Other friends are Bestovian, leader of a very successful Dynamis LS, Rhun, fellow Elvaan his main was PLD and Grummish, a galka played by a woman. These people have been very memorable over my years of play and I will never forget them.

I played FFXI since US launch on PC, then played almost exclusively on PS2 for 6 years. I stopped playing when Wings of the Goddess storyline was still being released. I'm not sure how many people are still around from those days but it was after the big ban wave that affected people who were duping drops in Salvage. Lots of my friends were affected, relic DRG and his wife and the leader of our Salvage group a warrior galka(sorry I forgot your guys names >< Dragonhaven seems to be the name that comes to mind for the DRG) and thankfully I dodged the bullet by never being a party leader during salvage.

I’m currently attempting to get my account back through Square-Enix support, but it’s looking grim. I don’t have my PlayOnline ID from back then and have gone through several credit cards(I read that this was one way to verify ownership of an account through billing information). I do have my original PS2 games with registration codes from FFXI/RotZ/CoP/ToAU/WotG so hopefully they can recover my account with those. I dual boxed and had a L65 RDM on my other account. Since I have two copies of each expansion the serial codes might be jumbled up but I hope SE can help me recover my main account or maybe even both accounts.

That aside I am asking the community if it’s worth going down this path attempting to get my account back or should I just start a new account and will I be able to get all my progress back from my 6 year tour of this game within a few months?

I never completed any Dynamis Relic weapons but I did have AF for all jobs except Dancer and Scholar. I had AF+1 gear for all my main jobs and AF2 and AF2+1 gear for my main jobs. I had Sandy rank 10, Bastok rank 10 and Windy rank 10 with all of RotZ/CoP/ToAU missions completed. I had Morganna Chest piece with 2/3 on the other gear slots for Morganna and Aeris. I had everything skilled to cap and fully merited main jobs along with fully merited base stats like 80mp and full STR stats. I had all +1 elemental staves and tons of +1 gear. I also had a full sky set or Kirin’s set, like Kirin’s Osode, Byakko Haidate, Genbu Kabuto etc. I’m not sure if all gear is upgradable but if I make a new game I will still grind out these old sets for nostalgia purposes and equip them to my mannequins.

Oh, I also had all the mannequins of the races and both genders iirc. I had a few of each ABJ piece also with the exception of the ABJ pieces that dropped from Odin. I might have one or two of those. I remember working on Salvage gear and I was working on completing a full Aeris and Morganna set. I had a few Skadi pieces and I can’t remember what the other gear set was, but I had a few of those pieces for my BRD. My THF was a TH4 THF if that even means anything anymore.

I know gear has changed and my top tier gear is garbage now. From what I’ve read the gear can be upgraded and scaled up. But if the time investment on obtaining this gear has diminished then and I can complete certain gear-sets easily I have no problem starting a new account.

The game seems way more accessible now and I just want to explore Vanna’diel and reminisce on old fond memories. Maybe get some friends back in Vanna’diel and run some duo or trio content. I miss exploring Sky, killing Virtues in Sea, I know I will prob not be able to get 64 people together to re-create the OG Dynamis feel but getting a relic in 3 months solo or sooner with a party sounds fun to me. Mythic weapons had just been fully released with their final forms put into the game. I know now there are Empyreal weapons and gear and that it’s supposedly the best weapons and gear in the game. I just want to know if my 6 years of play is worth fighting for or should I just reroll and get all those accomplishments back with a new account?

Any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Starting a new character isn't too bad. I was in your shoes about 18+ months ago, having played from PC release and fondly looking back on the "good old days" of huge dynamis groups and being proud of an AF2 drop. I came back from scratch and it was extremely easy to get up to speed, reach the level cap, acquire new, relevant gear and get up to date. I quit again, after about 6-8 months though, and have only recently returned a couple of weeks ago (same account). I'm finding it a bit more difficult to get caught up this time around, as this new expansion seems to have really changed things quite a bit, but it's still just as easy to get leveled and acquire good, or better, gear for your new jobs. To tell the truth, I've been a bit lonely, not having anyone else "new" to team up with and tackle some of the older content while I get myself back up to speed and work on certain storylines and gear that I still need to complete. I'd love to become a part of a consistent duo/trio (or more) that tackles ALL of the content and not just the new stuff, but I haven't been able to find the right partners just yet.

Well if I don't here anything from SE by the end of this week, I'm for sure going to start a new account. I read that players that play FFXI now are more solo minded and some of the courtesy of players are lost now. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find groups still wanting to do old content. I know if I start a new character my first goal will be to rush a job to 99 and attempt to solo all the old content. I just think about all the time I invested into raising my choco, doing Dynamis, fighting Omega and Ultima weapon, doing Einherjar, Salvage, Camping Sky Gods before they were proc bosses, camping proc drops in sky, fighting sea virtues... just so much I've accomplished in the past and now I don't have any of my titles, chocobos, or gear to show for it.

All that aside I look forward to making new bonds with other players and exploring new content with the Add On stories, Abysea and the new expansion. I just remember what a joy it was each time a new expansion zone was visited for the first time. I know it sounds cheasy but I remember my first encounter with Chigoe's in Aht Urgan... it was a horrible horrible death and I didn't even see it coming.... they were hard to spot lol.... I remember going through a Cavernous Maw and seeing lady bugs and fairies! Of course I always felt bad murdering fairies... but what's an adventurer suppose to do when crossed with a new foe? Attack it and see if you can make it out alive! lol I remember rumors saying that killing fairies is bad luck... I realized later a fairy could rez you and buff you... so I never killed a fairy after I got a rez from one... I actually remember fighting NMs and kiting the NMs to a fairy so the fairy could cast Cure 3 on me while I was fighting the NMs...

Gosh I want to play this game so bad... I'm not sure how much longer I can wait on SE getting back to me... I might just make a new account anyway....

I hear you. I've tried to solo a lot of the old content and gotten pretty far but there are some missions that require more than one person, regardless of how much damage/survivability you have. I also run out of motivation to keep grinding out mission after mission solo because there's no one to talk to or enjoy the adventure with while you run around. But I'm sure I'll find a couple of like-minded individuals eventually to tackle the older content I'd like to do and in the meantime, I've been working on certain newer content that's still helpful to me.

Keep dreaming, bro. I hope your optimism works out for you...but I really would not count on it. I wouldn't start a new character in this game unless I knew I had friends with ample playtime to help me.

Hear my opinion as a 2002-2004,2007-2009 player, I quit as 75BST 75WHM. I just got back to the game exactly one week ago and the friendly community as we knew it before is long gone. People are self absorbed in their own little 99 worlds and no one wants to help each other. I asked my old linkshells who were still active after 4 years for tips and /gg /ignored. I then hopped on my 10rdm/bst in attempt to get a grasp with the game once again so I asked for a teleport-dem for 5k, no reply. I then offered 10k, no reply. My final offer was 15k and still no reply. (It seems people aren't interested in gil any more or 15k is nothing to them) I wasn't going to raise any higher than that. Another story which took place 3 days later was that I wanted to finish my SCH AF Hat quest which required slaying a decently challenging NM sch ULBRECHT? I first asked my ls for help, no reply...Keep in mind, I am still a 75whm 75bst and have no idea what to do in the game. I then went to shout in town for about half an hour and not one single invite. I tried one last time shouting and of course, no response.. I said "@#%^ it" and went whm/nin to solo the NM. The fight took 25ish mins and I walked away with a sch af hat. Enough said, if you don't have reliable friends/ls who can help you in this game, the enjoyment you had back in the days will never be the same. This is my first month playing ff11 in 4 years and it is more than likely going to be my last month when ff14 is released

Most of the old content is easily soloed at 99 on BST. I didn't get any help at all when I did the entire TOAU storyline, so I went on RDM and soloed it without too much problem.

Which is pretty much what I do on the game these days! Solo all the content while the content I want to do I can't join because of I lack Delve weapons!

I can't say if that community has changed much from what it once was. I remember shouting for hours upon hours in early 2005 asking for help with my Whm AF2 Boots. I needed a Yagudo Holy Water. The community was alive with 5k+ people on Diabolos but people would rather ignore my shouts and sit in Lower Jeuno than answer my calls for help. Eventually someone messaged me saying they had watched me shout for awhile now and offered their help.

At that time as a mere 52whm I couldn't brave Castle Oztroja on my own for the monsters were much higher level than me. I could spend a couple weeks grinding out levels at 4k hour until I was high enough to solo the mighty Yagudo Abbot. Back then it was acceptable to see a challenge and pull your peers together to ask for help.

The community now see's many challenges as something you should do yourself before you ask for help. Back then 52-53 if you were lucky or made your own groups could be done in a day. It took me 2 years to level whm 1-75. Back then the thought of out leveling content to make it easier was unheard of. Why should I spend weeks/months leveling when I can ask someone to help?

Times have changed. 1-99 is a week, two if you take your time. The only road block you hit is at 70 for your maat fight. Getting mad because no one will help you? Help yourself first and do it by leveling. At 95/99 most jobs can solo all the old content. Want to quest your Rdm AF out of nostalgia? You can do all 5 pieces in an evening.

The only thing that community has gotten is independent. People do what they need to do to get things done on their own. You have to learn not to be dependent on others like you were in the old days. Depend on yourself.

I would also like to add that there have been many times that I have helped someone, or gotten help from someone, when I have been in the correct zone for the mission/NM/whatever. If you send me a tell from the zone I am in, "could you please help me for five minutes so I can get my rdm AF?" I will say easy, I'm right here. This goes for almost any older content. Team up for seals? I only need red Mage paper, so sure. Duo missions? Ok. Party for FoV pages? (Yes, please.). Try to be in a position that makes it easier for others to help.

Edit: Wow, eight and a half years of reading and occasionally posting on this forum and I got to the magic 69 post count. Time to count down now.

I actually took a few months break and restarted a character on my home server, the one I played and grew in long ago. In two months or so of casual playing, I am close to Maat fight and enjoying every bit of it.

I recently joined a LS that is actually doing "old school partying", one of the leader actually help people learning about pulling, skillchaining, etc. Though I mostly solo level my way up (due to trying to avoid as much as possible "book and abyssea burning"), I do enjoy those kind of LS event as it builds the bonds with new/returning players, as well as being a real FFXI school. The LS also does the mission and is very helpful to anyone joining their ranks (we did all the Promyvions last week and doing it again in a few days). It's a lot of fun and for once, the whole LS isn't centered on endgame, but more of the LS as a whole. That kind of LS is the kind I'd suggest for any vets coming back, not that I want to advertise whichever LS I am in, but to show that it is indeed possible to have a group of people that isn't in "their own little 99 world".

I am pretty casual and that kind of LS helps. I have redoing the mission and I am having a blast reading the storylines that I have long since done. CoP had me hooked again, and can't wait to do Zilart.

I'd suggest anyone who'd be playing a new character, casually, to just do it and enjoy it again. Don't mind the side quests (for example, LBs are mostly soloable except for one thing), I'd say redoing the storyline is worth all of it (but that's me).

But yeah, the real thing for returning players ins to have a community to bond to, and it's pretty hard to find it in FFXI nowadays. Just don't give up on the community, like I discover, they are still people that think of player before the "99 world".

the last time I played I was working on the quest where you have to find all the inscriptions for the mayor of Selbina. If I logged back in, it would be to do that, mostly just because I am finding most group stuff really tiring at the moment. People are too keyed up on perfection.

I dunno some of the most fun I've had in the last couple years was things like doing dynamis wins with my linkshell... where we might all wipe but we laughed about it and it was actually fun. I totally understand a lot of people are just wanting to do things quickly and perfectly so they can do them again, but I can't get into that.

I cant say what others do but when I'm in Jueno just siting around I'm usually busy in RL or just burnt out and don't feel like doing anything. Otherwise if I am active I'm usually off doing something. I also agree with being more likely to get help from someone if your in the same zone or area you need help in. The biggest thing you can do is to do as much as you can on your own, including reading up on stuff. I helped someone with limit break 1 this week only to find out its now entirely soloable by clicking some ???s in each zone.

Hi there,

We have an old school linkshell that might interest you. At the moment, we are going through CoP missions as we level up. We are planning to tackle other content as well, like story from RotZ, ToAU, WotG etc. We also do dynamis runs about once a week.

But, as i said, we are an old school LS and therefor we ask our members not to level in Gusgen or CN or abyssea pre-75. It's not a very big LS, as not many people are into the old school stuff anymore. But we have a core group of players who are online alot.

If you are interested in it, check out our website:

We are on Lakshmi by the way.
