Hi all,

I recently came back to the game after a many year break. A lot has changed some good some bad (at least for me). One of the things I am interested in, is soloing NM's. I am leveling a few jobs from scratch, mainly DNC, BLU and BST. Out of these three which has the ability to solo the best with minimal gear? Thanks for your input!

You've chosen three of the best solo jobs in the game, so it's a little difficult to immediately narrow it down to one. I'd say Beastmaster is the cheapest/easiest of the lot to gear up, but you'll always have to suffer the expense of jug pets, and pet food.

Dancer would probably be a good middle of the road soloer, it would likely outlast either BST or Blue Mage in intense one-on-one combat with NMs and can survive being attacked by multiple targets with virtually uninterruptible heals and general evasiveness. It will take a little more effort to gear, and having a variety of subjobs available makes DNC more versatile, so that's more time invested.

BLU almost certainly takes the most time, effort, and gil to gear up, but it can also accomplish some things that neither of the other mentioned jobs can. Massive burst damage, the ability to practically stun-lock most monsters, and the variety of job traits through Blue Magic make BLU very appealing for many applications. Unfortunately, even getting just the bare minimum to function spells is a time consuming task. You'll also need equipment for melee TP and WS, spellcasting for damage, MACC gear for some spells, and stat boosting gear for others. While clearly the more challenging to set up properly, BLU is very rewarding in many events, solo and small group alike.

Regardless of which job you choose, make sure you're having fun while soloing! The grind can get pretty monotonous, and enjoying the stuff you accomplish is crucial to that long-term satisfaction. Aim to get many small improvements to your character. Don't forget to merit, and educate yourself as thoroughly on the job that you choose as you can; you'll be far more effective if you read anything you can on the job boards here and on the other sites. The forums have slowed down, but all of the knowledge is still there.

I would say DNC, but my Blu is level 20, so discounting it is a bit premature on my part. Like the previous post mentioned, DNC has high evasion (nearly that of THF and NIN), and its ability to cure itself is pretty much restricted to the recast timer. It's not very powerful in terms of landing blows, though. It lands its fair share of criticals, but not like THF. Essentially, a DNC's fights may last longer, but they can survive with nearly all their HPs in tact. Try to look for gear with double, triple, or quad attack, and you'll be fine.

Also, DNC's don't especially fare well against undead NMs as I found out when fighting a NM Fomor. I did have a bit of lag and my SJ was THF, so I'm going to retry with no lag and SJ NIN. The reason I say they don't fare especially well against them is because Drain Samba is rendered useless.

Yeah they are all good at different things. Bst is the easiest to get to a useable state, so you can use it to get stuff for your other jobs. BLU is a fantastic job for filling a little space of time where you don't want to do anything to complicated but you want to achieve something - go spell farming! But yeah don't imagine you can rush it to cap and be useful with it. Spells will laugh at you.

Thanks for the advice all. I have been leveling all three a bit to see what one is going to be my main. They all have their good points. I would pick dancer in a second if it could kill things faster, granted it is only lvl 56 right now. Does the kill speed pick up some once you get Dancing Edge?

speed of dnc solo kills doesn't really "pick up" until abyssea gear comes into play, even then it's not the fastest unless you are killing things where your evasion easily avoids incoming damage. If you are constantly getting hit, dnc will not kill fast.

Of the jobs listed, BLU is the most versatile and "wanted" in groups. So while you want to solo now, later on you will probably also want or need to group for equipment. BLU is also the one that can generally kill the fastest as it can adjust to enemy weakness quite easily, and doesn't sacrifice damage dealing capability through exhaustion of TP for survival. That being said, I believe DNC to be the easiest to "survive" on solo, as long as you don't mind long fights. Go BLU/DNC if you really want the best of both worlds for solo capability.

Something to be warned about with BLU in regard to NMs is that many of them are packing increasing stun resistance. You can keep a vanilla mob almost perpetually locked down with Sudden Lunge (with the caveat of needing to wait for stun to wear off before you can stun it again), but try doing that on most relevant NMs nowadays and that stun will have stopped working after about a couple minutes.

The same sort of thing goes with DNC and Violent Flourish, but their survival doesn't depend as much on stuns.

Yes. And then it gets kind of silly when you're able to do solo darkness on basically every mob.
