There is a game just like FFXI. It's called FFXI. You can always come back.

XIV is going to be good, but different.

Hard to say but unfortunetely I don't have a crystal ball. ><
People who tend to have a lot of time invested in FFXI just don't want to put it down for anything else.
Those who get bored easily tend to leave and come back whenever they have withdrawl symptoms.

XI was the last of it's kind in that sort of MMO.

Most signs point to yes, but considering how narrow the market is for MMOs I wouldn't buy playtime in bulk.

its been over 3 years since I called it a day but ill try and answer your questions

1 will there ever be another game like FFXI.... the answer is no FFXI was for people like you or me or is for everyone else a unique in many ways for starters un-like most MMORPG I have played to date the servers are more open and diverse we have people from Japan playing along side folks from Europe and America where as in others you have the servers regionally locked so only Americans play with Americans and the Europeans are playing with Europeans

then you have to richness of Job classes as I said iv been away for 3 years back then we did not have Rune Fencers or Geomancers and I have no idea what the hell thay are but we have loads of different ways of doing things and thats not all we can chop and change our jobs if we feel like it so you could change tactics for fighting mobs

and the quests were for the most part fun to do but it could be at times a royal pain in the backside

2 its hard to say how it will turn out but when it was first launched 3 years ago it was something short of a disaster but with the re-launch a month away... well it too soon to say anything but its no FFXI we should remember FFXIV are not the same yes the races share somethings but both are different in more ways and we must remember no Final Fantasy game follows on from another (unless you include FFX-2 and the spin offs if you could call em that of FFXIII)

but in closing when I logged out for the last time on the 15th of January 2010 I feared that FFXI was in its final days, 3 years on this old horse is still getting flogged
now I don't want to hurt other peoples feelings but I feel that FFXI has run its course and there is nothing for me to go back to a lot can happen in 3 years

FFXI will never be remade, just like WoW, CoH, EQ... none of them will ever have a true clone done because the original is still there and still available for comparison. But FFXI, the game itself, is not perfect. It's full of flaws and issues. The only reason it felt different was the fact that we had to overcome them as a group, not as individuals. Other games, the challenge starts when you hit cap. FFXI forced difficulty on you from the outset. Just gaining levels was a struggle, and required others to help.

The problem is that the market for that kind of game, with punishing difficulty, is now not the norm for MMOs. Those games exist, like Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, but they are targeted for one-time buyers, not a subscription model, because FFXI failed in the way that it did. The game launched before WoW, and on two platforms, with a very highly recognizable brand that was still very huge at the time. Yet, WoW stomped on it, hard. WoW broke all the ideas surrounding the market at that time, and opened the flood gates to the casual crowd to join in the MMO craze.

Now the issue is, everyone wants to repeat WoW. And WoW is the least hardcore, brutal difficulty curve game out there. It focuses primarily on soloing ability except for the dungeons and raids, both of which you can fairly well skip if you have no interest in them. Even a lot of hardcore players are starting to burn out and just want to play games, not live in them.

FFXI is the last of its breed, and I'm not really sorry to see it happening that way.

FFXI is still alive and kicking, sad that a lot is dead content, but it is very much a playable game.

FF14 is beautiful, sounds great, and is fun to play (combat is actually way more involved than XI and is very fun). The changes from 14 1.0 are staggering (if you were in the Beta you know how sh*t it was, or if you read any of the post release reviews) and I think it will be a very strong game. It combines some of the best stuff from XI, and WoW, and some of the bad stuff too. But I think 14 has a bright future, doubtful it will last as long as XI did, but it will have a strong following for some time to come.

XI I think will end up free to play over the next couple years, which is probably a good thing as it will increase community size, but I don't see SE killing it any time soon, essentially like most MMO's as long as there is a community, there is a game.

i would suggest ffxiv , its gorgeous, somewhat caters to all playstyles (more so the 11 ever did whcih is great)

11 is stagnant, ppl come and go and some never left.
it has not grown nor will, due to the oldschool mindset of content design so thats sad cause it had alot of potential years ago to keep growing

in all honesty 14 will give you oodles of more fun and they are at least somewhat capable of thinking in the present.
very high hopes for what they have done already, they have done a great job imo.

I would also suggest FF14, its where I will be.

I also look back fondly on my 7(?) years of FFXI, but that game is gone. The FFXI of today is a very different game, and I only really suggest coming back if you want to perhaps do things like finish quests, missions, AF quests for lore purposes or to level a few jobs for fun. Even better if you can find 2-3 people or RL friends and you can do all that together.
If you're thinking you want to come back and do hardcore endgame, I'd strongly discourage that thought. All your old gear is worthless. All the strategy and skills you remember are different. You will need tons of help and probably a few months to even start to catch up. Even Abyssea, which everyone claims to be easy, is only easy after spending some time there. You will be hopelessly lost until you study the wiki like its a college course to understand the lights, abyssites, atmas, and the like. And Abyssea is just scratching the surface...you pretty much need to nearly finish the 3 expansions and have the gear, +2s, and an Empy or two to begin on Voidwatch, NNI, Salvage, and Einherjar. Good luck finding groups for those. Then you've got to go back to Dynamis for at least a month or two and farm yourself a relic (solo probably on BST, sounds like tons of fun right? lol). Then you've got to upgrade the relic to 99. Now you're ready to head to SoA, but guess what? All that gear you just killed yourself getting is worthless again. No one wants you for any SoA endgame because you need the weapons and gear that drops from the fights you want to do, which you can't do until you get the drops so unless you can somehow magically convince your spinning moogle to hack the game for you, thats what you're coming back to...a spinning moogle and that ever-calming Mog House music. I can't unhear it after afking overnight for so many years lol.

Say what? I can't see how you can say FFXI "failed" when S-E announced it is the most profitable game in the FF series. And it's STILL going with paid subscriptions over a decade after launch. Just because it wasn't as huge as WoW doesn't make it a failure. If you're talking "most successful MMOs ever", FFXI has to be up there near the top even if it's not #1. Maybe you could argue that FFXI could have been even MORE successful, but that's just degrees of success.

I play as tank or healer in other MMORGPs, but play as DD on FFXI as healing is incredibly annoying due to UI limitations and gearing up a tank takes too much effort. I would say if you want to play as a tank you probably should look for another game. Most of the content you just chuck DDs at and when you do need a tank you will most likely need Aegis or Ochain.

The game requires a lot of your time to just to put simple events together because nobody wants to do them and it could take hours before you get enough people to do something you want. The difference between a lol player and a really good one is so mind boggling huge because of all the prerequisites you have to do before you can even get anything useful.

The game has its strengths in you probably don't have to play any other game for the next decade. You basically just grow and grow and grow in strength until everything becomes quick and easy to do, then you can do it on every 22 jobs out there. Getting to the part where you are useful in events takes a very long time though.

HELM activities would be so much better if you could see the points where you can harvest at instead of trying to target possible locations. Most of the time I just harvest useless stuff that don't stack and crafting is too expensive.

I don't know if I was just misunderstanding your post, but City of Heroes, sadly, is no longer around for comparison.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The mentality that it has to be the best game out there or it "failed" is exactly why everyone is making WoW clones now and ends up competing for the same demographic.

The beauty of FFXI is that it catered to a market that was slightly off-center and had no game to call their own. FFXI is for a slightly more mature crowd than WoW, a crowd that actually works together for the best interest of people other than just themselves, a crowd that isn't interested in being rewarded just for showing up but prefers being rewarded for good teamwork and intense play. That's why FFXI has been so successful. Over a decade later, not a single game has been released that targets our demographic.
