I am in Canada, and also new to final fantasy. Would I be best to go to JP server or NA server? Or would it be basically the same lag anywhere I go?

There are no "JP" or "NA" servers. All of the servers are located in Japan so it will be the same lag whichever server you choose.

They aren't segregated by region either. All servers have multiple nationalities (and languages) playing on them simultaneously. It could be argued that some servers have more of one than the other, but for the most part, they all have NA's, JPs, EU's, Australians, Chinese, etc.
