Free-2-play question Follow

#1 May 31 2013 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent

The game is free to play now and I am wondering if that might have changed anything with the community.
Have more people jumped on since the change?

This is the only relevant question. I had more, but the sticky answered most of those questions.

How would a player starting from scratch fare in the game today?

Very well. The window on that will start to shut as most people get their other jobs, mules and what not to the various level caps. But even after, the game is now able to be solo'd to 99. Slower than alliance book burns or Abyssea exp alliances, but still very realistic.

Is the community robust for the lower levels?

Not the way you are thinking, no. Gone are the days of the 6-man party. Now you solo up high enough to join the alliance in Gusgen, then go to Crawler's Nest, the Bostineaux Oubliette and either stay there or go to Abyssea at 75.

Could I find a party quickly for the desert (level's 15-25)? (Sorry, I don't remember the name of the desert. It's been so long)

Valkurm Dunes is now a deserted desert. Soloers and a few small groups still drop in there, but mostly you do exp alliances. I'm not giving a lot of info becaaaaauuuussse...

I've attempted to jump back in in the past, but the community was completely dead. Now the game is free to play and I am wondering if that might have changed anything. I'm very familiar with the game. I started playing it the day it came out up until 2005 where my life no longer had time to play FFXI.
Game ain't free to play.

This and WoW are two of the few with a monthly fee still. So if that doesn't dissuade you, I'm sure we can give you the path to take.

I think you might have this confused with another game; FFXI isn't free to play.

edit: beaten to the punch.

Feel like they're confusing it with Rift's pending F2P adjustment, or maybe Tera as the other most recent conversion. Naturally, you'll have subscribers from either claiming end of days, a flood of bile spewing xbox kiddies, the rise of pay-to-win, or whatever, but it's usually just sensationalist bull or selective ignorance of their community's current ills. People are going to have to get over this phobia, but at the same time, devs do need to be cautious about nickel-and-diming on otherwise required features.

Thanks for your reply's everyone. I attempted to narrow down my post to the question that wasn't answered in the sticky. Sorry to have wasted your time with *all* the questions.

I will have to recheck my emails. I received an email from playonline that FFXI is now a Free to play game. Must be a scam or something.

Welp, maybe see you guys in game. It's hard though since the community is what got me addicted to the game in the first place. It sounds like a lonely world on those servers now. =(

It's actually not lonely at all. In my last Abyssea alliance, I made at least three new friends just by joking around with people. I guess your mileage varies by server, but really there's still a lot of life, and new people to meet on the servers we currently have.

Yeah, the servers are very much alive.

Oh and the only free to play for this game is though Swagbucks atm; Swagbucks offers ultimate game cards that you can earn. I don't do that (Well, I use swagbucks but it's for Amazon gift cards, which is a better use of my time) but there IS that option. But then again..it's not really free, is it?
