I'm guessing one of the editors must play.

It's still live as of this post, but here's a screenshot.

Could potentially attribute some traffic to yesterday's announcement of Rift going F2P come June 12th. Amidst the usual doom and gloom one might expect of such an announcement, it came up in the ginormous thread about which MMOs are still sub-only these days, and in blanket characterization, superior simply because. The list basically included WoW, FFXI, XIV when it's re-released, and Eve. You might have some other niche ones here and there, but those were basically the biggies.

Whether or not that translates to any kind of blessing for XI, I dunno. Both games are plagued by a crowd that thinks they're more important than they really are, but I'd also say Rift is a touch more accessible than XI for the casual player. Some may draw similarities in the job/subjob to the soul system, but both have their cookie cutter quirks. The endgames are also different with XI rarely having any kind of dungeon setting culminating in a boss or five. Both games have their pros and cons, but I'd say anyone who jumps ship because "Trion sold out!" or some rubbish was ultimately looking for a reason to quit, anyway.

Should XIV prove stable, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if XI shifted to a F2P model eventually, as well.
