Missing Sound Effects in Larger PTsFollow

#1 May 01 2013 at 10:55 AM Rating: Decent
Hey guys,

I've played this game since its launch and ever since I've owned it. 100% of my sound effects don't go through.

I've tried asking others if this is just a game engine thing or just me. None of them seem to comprehend the problem, so below i'm going to provide a few different playing scenarios to show you guys what I mean.

Solo Play/ Alone grinding - 100% of my sounds work and come through as long as I'm not playing a class where I can cast multiple things quickly.

Party of 5 Grinding - 70-85% of my sounds work and come through, but often enough I notice the bard singing his song, or the corsair doing his roll, etc with no sound effects at all while I hear the other 70-80% just fine.

Alliance Grinding - 25-40% of my sounds work and come through. Because of the sheer number of people casting all their different abilities, it's a really lucky day for me if I don't miss half the sounds coming from their abilities.

If any of you have any tips/workarounds/regedits/3rd party programs to get this specific issue to work please let me know.

I'm running:
Core i5 3.3ghz x 4 3.8turbo
Nvidia 560Ti SC 1GB
128GB Force 3 SSD
8GB DDR3 RAM
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Series
Asus Motherboard.

I was having this problem in a book-burn in Gusgen the other day. I wouldn't say I was missing half of them, but I leveled 7 times and never once saw my lvl up flash or hear the music. Used a few WS's or abilities that didn't register any sound also.

Oh ya:

Intel Core i5-3570K
EVGA GeForce 660ti
1TB Samsung HDD
8GB DDR3 G. Skill RAM
ASRock z77 MOBO

You don't get the Level Up! and music when you level because of an exp bonus from the book, only from regular mobs.

As for the sound effects, FFXI can handle 12 sounds at once max, if I remember right, and in a very large party you're likely to have more than 12 sounds going at once.

It could simply be some partial lag which drops the sound effects. There's also a limit to how many sounds can play simultaneously, I think, hence the 'Max Sounds' setting in windower and FFXIs config menu (outside the game, not in). Try upping that to max in FFXIs config if you don't use windower, and if you do, set max sounds to... 32? 36? I forget what the actual supported max is.

Edit: Beaten to it D: but as FFXIs default config menu has max sounds @ 20 I'd say it can handle more than 12. Windower forums suggest it can go slightly above 30 but I don't really care enough to slog through links to find out the real number >.>

It's listed as 20 (hex) in the registry, which is 32.

I'm guessing there's a new bug that is messing up the sound. I was in a group the other day where almost NO sounds other than the BGM played. It was actually kind of creepy.

Then later I took the warp taru from Al Zahbi and landed in Rolanberry. There was some kind of buzzing sound around me. It must have been a corrupted environmental sound because it was only in a small area. Maybe some kind of buffer overflow or stale pointer is causing memory corruption.

I think it depends on your PC, actually. I have onboard sound and I'm capped at 12 in FFXI Config. Someone with a dedicated sound card may have more.

Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if SE broke something.

I've had 'lost sound' in XI since I started playing in '05, on numerous PCs over those 8 years, every one has suffered in spite of their having different audio systems.

After some time playing I'll notice the initial sound on a spell cast won't sound, but then the ending will .. ie. the sound that plays while the spell is being 'prepared' won't sound any more but the sound that the actual cast moment triggers does .. but then eventually all casting sound effects cease. Not until I exit and re-start do they come back. Other audio events will stop randomly. I've always assumed it's down to crappy software design and that audio channels simply get dropped due to lack of resources, or somesuch: I know little of audio programming on a PC so no idea what happens under the hood, but the effect is like that even if the reality is entirely different,

I've always found it hugely annoying since I use audio cues a lot, especially when WHMing and having to spam spells, while I focus on looking at health bars etc.

For Elwyn: Consider reinstalling that audio driver or doing a file check on your software. That sounds more like something corrupted or, worst case, a physical issue on the soundcard.

For the rest of the thread: FFXI has a cap of sound effects based on your hardware's capabilities. For example, my old PC had a dedicated soundcard, and pretty much every sound up to about 20-30 was heard, and this actually a configurable option in the software. On my notebook, lacking a decent driver until more recently (I mean, it couldn't even record output sound until that driver without physically wiring itself together from a headset jack to the input jack...) I was always missing sounds when stuff got hectic.

Now, you have to understand, they've added and worse reused a lot of sound effects. When you get into a major combat, you hit that sound effect overload cap pretty quickly. Couple that with the animation glitches that occur with macro changes and usage of instants like Curing Waltzes, and weird stuff happens.

Example: I was soloing on PUP/DNC and the following four actions happened near simultaneously:

- Using Curing Waltz
- Using Asuran Fists immediately after
- Haste from puppet
- Yawn from Apkallu

Of these things, the Curing Waltz showed and sounded, Haste showed, no sound, the Asuran Fists didn't have any visual or audio effects on me or the mob, and Yawn's sound effect went but no visuals.

It would have been weird had I not played DNC for so long. It was about that time when I really noticed the effects/sounds started getting crushed up regularly. Prior to that, maybe I just hadn't seen the issues because I really had not melee'd that much on a job that had so many abilities. However, I regularly lost sound on steps, cures, sambas. Animations glitched out or vanished. It's all a part of the spaghetti code that SE has. Where other games compensate for it, this game just can't.

So, long story short: No, your experience is far from abnormal.
