Thinking about starting over from scratch.Follow

#1 Apr 21 2013 at 12:30 PM Rating: Decent
Hey!

Well as the topic said I'm thinking about starting over from scratch on FFXI. I've played it a bit casually for a few years before (leveling addict, no raids) but that ended somewhere mid-Aht Urghan expansion. Did play my SMN & WHM mostly during that time at 75 (once a healer always a healer...), but had every other class up at around 40+ so probably can play most of them with some refreshment. Went over to WoW as a lot of other peps, and pretty much have grown tired of it.

Have a lot of questions but I can put a few main points up here (so it won't become a wall of text):

Would it be hard for anyone to start from scratch (lvl 1, no sub jobs, no money etc)? My old account is since long gone to a friend so thinking about a digital copy of the whole thing.

Is there any recommended servers/high pop servers for european players? From sweden here so GMT+1 timezone, but I have however played with a lot of US/JP players before.

Is it hard to get into the FFXI Community nowdays? Mostly thinking; do peps have a generaly negative attitude to new players as there is in WoW? The playerbase there is horrible on that point. This as well; most of the peps I know that played quit the game a while back, so is it a good idea to find any LS through these forums first?

Has there been any large changes on the leveling department since Aht Urghan? Now thinking as a DD player (mostly BLU, SMN & COR/RNG.) Has the solo leveling improved anything, or is it the usual "<insert class> looking for party" for a couple of hours? :P

It's quite a lot to read so apologise to start with, and thank you for any answers!

Its not so much the leveling and low level jobs you'll be dealing with, but the fame building, inventory establishment and lack of transportation at teh start that will be the bigger problem. if your willing to build your fame up again then i guess thats more power too you.

Ive been on Odin since i started playing and there is a still a good amount of people there. As for other servers idk if some have a higher pop for certain things.

You can try finding a linkshell via the forums at =10 but i would also recommend on your 1st trip to jeuno just shouting that your a new player looking for a linkshell. If you dont already have one you'll find one that way.

Leveling has been destroyed from what you used to know. 2 New innovations have changed the leveling dept.
1st. Fields of Valor / Grounds of Valor - these are training regimes that you can undergo in mostly any zone. Kill X of monster A and Y of monster B and get a EXP/Gil/Tabs(FoV currency) reward. Repeat... for a monster to qualify it simply needs to yeild some EXP. even 1 EXP is enough so people Alliance this **** over and over again.
Note: with Grounds of Valor everytime you complete a Regime the EXP Reward Bonus will increase to a point where eventually it will double the initial reward.

2nd. Abyssea - With one of the "newer" addons, exp rewards increase per kill if the same monster is killed successively. And the EXP is rewarded directly to the player without getting cut from additional party members. meaning when the EXP gets capped (around 600 per kill) with 18 people killing monsters you can get up to 300-350k exp an hour in a traditional abyssea group. There is also a position of Key Person. While in abyssea (similar to old dynamis) your time ticks down the longer you remain (can start with a max of 120 minutes). Opening Blue chests can yeild 10 more minutes of time. This can be done as much as you want as long as the chests you get have TE's in them. so a few level 30 people will be running around attempting to open all the blue chests. Minimum level to enter abyssea is 30.

Thank you for the reply Tarqs :)

The fame building/inventory things is not to bad I guess. Always up for a challange, and pretty decent on the social end of the spectrum so shouldn't be much of a problem there :) Will try to find a LS as soon as I hit either Juno or look around before that a bit as well.
Also used to be good on the healing department, but I'll see what kind of jobs I'll be taking up (mostly aiming towards a DD job for a change) I did however love BLU, DRG, PUP and BRD. Are those sought after nowdays?

Was earlier on the Pandemonium server here, but heard that it merged to Asura, so that might be something to look up. Might come running to Odin otherwise hehe x)

The leveling changes sounds interesting, but I haven't really decided if I like them or not (looked them up quickly after your reply). I did enjoy playing jobs from scratch in the dunes/jungles etc. but atm I have a limited time with playing due to work/studies and GF (3-4hours, ~3days a week.) The old grind is one of the things that put me off last time I got the urge to start playing again thou, same thing there due to limited time. Feels like it could either be awsome for leveling lots of jobs quickly, or disasterous for ruining the time spent leveling and learning to play the jobs right.

On another note regarding jobs/leveling: are the sub job quests still around? Or have they been nerfed/removed? Is it the same with the Genkai quests? They where slightly annoying to do by my own, so any help from future LS/friends would be nice I suppose :P

Edit: Is most of the gear you need/get crafted and accessed through the auction house still? Or have they added more like rewards from quests/events etc?

BLU is a great job, though one of the slowest to start - it is in fairly high demand across content. It is probably the hardest job to burn up in the game and still be effective though. But if you're starting new there is a lot to recommend it. Spells are time consuming, but free, it is an effective abyssea farmer, it is useful as a proccer so you can be useful in some events even if you don't already have higher tier gear...

I'm a big blu fan. That said, I'd start with WHM then take up blu so you can farm and stuff (BLU can set TH1 now)

I am about to do the same thing, well not fully start over, I will keep my same character but I need many jobs leveled and I love the old content cause I missed alot of it ;] If you join Lakshmi I will help you with all the process of starting over long as you got teamspeak.

That's some good news on BLU at least, thanks for the info Olorinu. I enjoyed the BLU class back when I played, mainly due to the large amount of fun spells and customisation with them. Took some time to gather them all but hey, it was worth it =)

Thanks for the offer Breadn, I'll think about it :) got lots going on at uni the next coming weeks/month so wont do it yet thou. I'll think about it for a little while longer ^^

Thanks for the replies!

Starting over from scratch is what I did... I think it might have been my biggest mistake. And only for one reason really... Limit Break quests. They have kept me from playing the game for the past 2 weeks. im stuck on LB3 and I cant do it myself obviously.

My biggest hate about this game is that LB quests are not soloable. Back in the day this game was all about partying and not soloing. I think they need to update these quests real quick.

Ah that sucks DjinnRB :/ Could've figured that they would still be there thou >< Can't get anyone to help you from your LS? Or shout out in jeuno and see if anyone have time?

I suppose that the challenge here would be to get into a decent LS and make some new friends that might be able to help out with such things. But I'm always up for a challenge as stated =)

What part are you stuck on? I would think LB3 to be one of the easier ones. You can do it all with sneak & invisible.

I'm guessing that getting through the brass door in Castle O., right before the High Priest's room, could cause trouble for some people, especially if they're trying to do the quest solo. Unless someone has recently swept one of the torch rooms clean, lighting a torch without attracting the attention of multiple angry Yags is a delicate operation, not to mention the mad dash to get through the door before it closes. I'm not saying it can't be done... but there are a lot of things that can go wrong.

Is that really the spot? The yags aggro sight. Stand around until they face different directions then drop invis. Click the torch then put invis back up and run for the door. SE made the door stay open long enough to do solo years ago.

I think about going back all the time... Seems better for me to wait for XIV. I quit with a few jobs at 75, not sure I want to go through more LB quests for the 99 cap. If you do decide to start over, good luck.

The genkai after Maat are all easy. Trade merits and kindred crest, which are common drops in any party, one has you find an item which I haven't heard anyone in my LS say was difficult to get and then gk10. Not too difficult, from what I heard it was made easier not long ago.

Started up the free 14 day trial thingie (due to new account, e-mail etc) just to look around the game a bit now. I must say I like the FoV/GoV addition (from a casual Point of view that is), and also trying out a mithra RDM to start up. Ended up on Asura server after all (I think....) :P

Just a few small questions more if someone has time/wants to answer :)

1. Gear wise, is the AH the way to go like it was back when I played? (thinking like wax sword+1 for starter weap etc etc) Don't have access to it on the trial, but if this keeps going I'll probably purshase the whole game hehe.

2. Related to the other question; money making was a little bit more tedious on the trial verision due to the lack of AH. Is it still the major income to gather and sell stuff there or have SE added some "magic way" to grind gil? :P Gotten a bit of Money from the FoV, but hardly only covers the cost for spells (at lvl 10 atm, ran around in lvl 1 gear all the way here xD )

3. Just hit lvl 10 last night. Any idea if there's still exp partys in valkurm running around? I'll probably grind a bit more FoV to at least 15 if that's the case, but would be nice to get a party thou, since that's what I loved with the game before (good exp parties that is hehe).

Thanks for all the replies so far peps, been a great help!

1. You can or buy from NPC for sometime a lower price. With GoV Alliance, even though you'd look better with, you don't need to be geared perfectly like before. Personnaly, I try to keep up with some different decent gear here and there until I hit AF and Scorpion Harness/Vermillion/Whatever. Then you can level with 50/60 gear until you hit 78 and switch for Abyssea almost-free-gear. In short : just gear decently here and there, but don't waste a fortune on gearing until the 70s, unless that piece of gear will still be part of your gear swap at 70+.

2. Crystals will give you a ton of money while leveling. The things that used to be good for farming back then are still in demand nowadays. I have a sweet spot for Wild Onions in Horu. Ruins while leveling from 5-15. Good starting money in my opinion.

3. GoV alliances starts at around 13-14 in Gusgen Mines. If you wanna level up quickly, I'd hit Gusgen at around those levels. It also gives you the opportunity to get Magicked Skull for your subjob item. If you're more of a soloer, I tend to do :

West Saru. : lvl 1-5
Inner Horu. Ruins : 5-15 (meaby able to push to 20 with different GoVs)
Dagruf Wadi (if you have the courage to get there) : 15-18(20 again probably)
Maze of Shakrami : 20+

Afterward, for GoV alliances, it's mostly Crawler's Nest (32-56) and Bostauniaux Oubliette (56-75 with Aby and 99 whitout).

Here's a good guide for FoV and GoV leveling :

That was a very informative post MisterRandy, hats off to you :)
Currently leveled in sarutabaruta so that makes sense to follow the path to horutoto ruins (sp?) and continue there.

Kinda figured that the gil things would be bound to AH as before thou, saved up silk threads, crafting mats that I've found on the way so hopefully can make some money from there :)

I'll try to follow that gear thing as well, thou pretty annoying since I was one of those "Oh a lvl 15 tunic+1, must have it!" peps hehe xD But if it's not needed to the same extent as before there should be less need for it then :)

The nice thing about Inner Horu. Ruins is that while you get Wild Onion and Fire Crystal, they are also part of a GoV, meaning it's a win for any new character.

I'd say that you need to judge or not if the gear you have will be at the very least decent for leveling. There's plenty of people in Gusgen, and even in Crawler's Nest sometimes, who are geared with lvl 1-10 stuff. People who will be reading this might not like what I about to say, but the gear doesn't really matter if you're hitting things decently/cures/nuke/support and you're not leeching in the back of a dark corner (or inside a martello (people doing Abyssea know what I mean)). Just get the important pieces that you think is worth your gil since you'll be leveling very fast anyway (like SH which is 50k and meaby less nowadays and is still useful until lvl 78).

Having a social Linkshell also opens a lot of leveling and gearing opportunities.

It might be early, but I'd bookmark for later (a few weeks or months, depending on your playtime) that "what to do when you're 99 for endgame" that FUJILIVES described in a recent post. It will come in handy when you get there (though not really in your situation) :
