Returning player, what do I need? Follow

I just returned to FFXI after a few year hiatus. I used to play 4 jobs on each race, mainly to avoid having to store all that gear on one character. I've decided to condense and focus on one character this time around, and need to be selective in what I grab from my other characters before I retire them for good. Obviously my SH, nice weapons and such.. but ammo, other stuff.. not worth it? I don't want to cramp my inventory and end up wishing I hadn't made this decision. Any thoughts or advice?

Depends on how long a few years equals. If it been a while, would prob say is not all.. about maybe 90% of the gear you have isn't what it used to be and is situational at best. With the addition of abyssea, void watch, lv99 cap and the gear you can get from there among other events... as I mentioned all depends on how long you been away. You can always use the gear as you lv up other characters but then again with the speed of lvn up you will be past it in a flash.

I would recommend just jumping right into the game with a job you know you will enjoy.

I say this because the game has changed dramatically. The changes are not just gameplay or levels though, there has been radical changes in gear and storage systems. As mentioned, most of your old gear will be near useless post lv78. The second point is that a huge portion of gear can be stored with NPCs (similar to old gear storage NPCs). This means having a bunch of high level jobs is not nearly as painful on the inventory it once was.

Before putting too much thought into all of this though, definitely find a linkshell and try out the game, it is a very different experience now.

Thank you guys. I've been reading up on changes. I left about mid-wings of the goddess. I will definitely look into storage systems now. Even if I don't need the gear I used to use, I'm sure some things are at least worth selling. I appreciate the replies! Thank you again.

I'd sell most of it/as much as possible and keep a few key items... but other than r/ex stuff it almost isn't worth keeping anything that won't be immediately useful on the first job/sub jobs you plan on taking up. You can always grab it on the AH later or in a pinch, just use whatever you can scrounge up.
