HI, guys,
I'm hoping somebody could please help me out with an issue i have got while try to play FFXI on windows 8. I used to play FFXI on my old laptop that i don't have any more (that was windows 7) and i have brought a new laptop that is windows 8 and has got all the system requirements needed to play FFXI. So i downloaded steam because this is where i purchased FFXI from, i then dowloaded and installed all the content. Next i opened FFXI through the icon i have created on the desktop screen, then entered my correct and logged into play online and started to load the game, the game then went to full screen and was working ok until i get to the select character screen i select my character and then the program stops working, and the message box comes up saying play online viewer has stopped working. Every time i try to load it up after this happens i get the same result, also i have tried running the troubleshoot compatibility program and have had no luck with that either.
I would really appreciate any help that may help me out with this issue as i am really eager to getting back to playing this game
and sorry if my spelling or punctuation is bad im not used to writing stuff like this out but hope i made sense .
Thank You

FFXI doesn't like being forced out of full screen mode and from what I've read it is easy to accidentally do that in Windows 8. Your best bet is to go to the FFXI config and turn on Windowed mode.

OK thanks for the post, do i have to download the windower program to get FFXI to go into windowed mode or is there another way to do so. I had a play around and read some reviews and i thought the only way to get windowed mode was to get windower?

Something like:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ffxi\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\either ToolsEU or ToolsUS, depending where you are from\FFXIConfig

Close POL, open up the config tool, check the windowed option, save it and restart POL.

Ironically enough, FFXI windowed mode runs better on Windows 8 than Windower does. (The latter requires a bit of massaging and launching as admin and hates short cuts in Windows 8....)

awesome guys this is great help thanks, ill try this out as soon as play online has stopped updating.
i messed up and was playing around with the properties on the FFXI icon on steam and clicked verify integrity of game cache and now i have had to reinstall FFXI from the beginning because every time i tried to start FFXI after this there was an error saying product key not found and another error saying FFXI was not installed correctly.
Thanks a lot guys as soon as i know if using windowed mode has worked ill post on here thanks again :-)

Likely culprit is your video card drivers. May have to rollback when playing the game. I don't remember what specific version people have been using for Nvidia offhand, but if you're ATI, I have no idea there, either.

Pretty sure it's a confirmed bug in the latest Intel 4000 drivers, and a roll back to a previous version resolves the issue.

Yea I had the "invisible characters" problem too. Just keep installing older drivers one by one (going from newest to older ones) until you find one that works. Takes a while, but that'll fix the problem for you.

One thing I wanted to add, Windows 8 does NOT come preloaded with the latest DirectX updates; whether store bought or freshly installed. You can get updated to the latest DirectX here: Microsoft DirectX Web Installer

But yes, I would also try and update your graphics drivers as well which should be available through the website of the company that manufactured your laptop. Normally these are the stable drivers that were around when your laptop was made.

If you have NVidia/AMD chipset then you'd go to their websites. After all of this, you should be good to go. You could also do a 'Check Files' through the POL client if the above doesn't work.

Hopefully it works now though :) I hope to be rejoining FFXI before FFXIV release to finish off some old content/missions when the new expansion comes out later this month.

ok guys i thanks for all the help for anybody who reads this and gets the invisible character problem this is how i solved it.
i went to the control panel, opened hardware and sound folder, opened device manager fond my graphic driver right clicked on it and selected properties, clicked the driver tab clicked update driver, then selected browse for computer for river software, then then i selected the let me pick from a list of device my computer option and clicked Intel(4000)HD graphics family (Microsoft corporation - WDDM1.2) clicked next and installed the driver, restarted my computer and tried FFXI and it worked fine.

I got this information from another forum i have searched through and thought it would be a good idea to post it on here and hope it helps others like it helped me.
The only problem i have got now is with windower i can get it to open fine, i can log in to play online and get to the FFXI front page i click play then get to the the other menu and click play again then it loads up checking FFXI password and all that stuff then the window re-sises and i get the play online viewer has stopped working message like i was getting with the original FFXI game any help towards resolving this issue would be great thanks

Thanks again for everyone who has posted you've all been very helpful
