Windows XP Support Information

We regret to inform you that Final Fantasy XI / PlayOnline will no longer support Windows XP in accordance with the following schedule.

Due to the fact that Microsoft(R) has already completed the support life cycle of this product, we have found that continuing support for this OS is a difficult proposition.

At the time support for this product ceases, the software you are currently using will continue to function and games will still be playable. We will also continue to perform regular updates of existing software. However, after the date when we discontinue support, we will as a general rule no longer be able to provide support for problems arising as a result of the operating system.

Furthermore, customer support for members utilizing this operating system will still be available through the Square Enix Support Center.

[Support End Date]
March 26th, 2013

[Affected Operating Systems]
Windows XP

To be fair, PS2 is only a year and a half older than Windows XP, and Windows XP was only out for six months before FFXI was first beta'd.

I don't see this as a problem for most serious PC gamers (as they're probably multi booting anyway). But I do see this as a problem with the people with old PCs. If they were to upgrade, they'd probably check out some of the newer games and let their FFXI subs run out, if/when the XP problems get too serious.

I hope this means they'll at least try and fix the performance issues with newest gpu drivers and CPU models available.

So an -old- game, that almost -requires- an old OS to even be able to play on it properly is now having it's support discontinued for it...

They better have a good backup plan for making it operate as smoothly on 7/8 as it does on XP >.>

The only reason my computer is still running on XP is FFXI. Only reason.

Wow I've had like 4 pc's in the last 9 yrs of playing FFXI.
What's your secret to making them last? I really enjoyed playing on XP and was sad when I went on to vista.
(I am on windows 7 now and it works very well.)

If you're not having problems with running the game on XP then you're probably fine.

They're not cutting off the XP users, they're just going to stop troubleshooting XP issues.

Have a decade old PC sitting in the other room that's basically been on 24/7 since I got it, only being off with power outages, occasionally moving it, and giving it a good air dusting on occasion. If there's any one secret I can bestow, it'd be to simply not download stupid sh*t like anything some random FB app wants. Laptop owners should probably up it a notch and add, "Don't spill stupid sh*t on it!" to the agenda. Though, I've seen people spill things on towers they keep on the floor, too.

While the above PC is generally used by my family now, I still do frequent checks on it to knock down useless programs they download, annoying toolbars, the usual spy/adware, and heaven forbid a virus. They love grumbling at me about it being slow, but running on 768mb RDRAM in this day and age is just asking for sluggishness on HD videos and the like. So, yeah, lay off the ****, don't click that link in a strange email, and know some deals are really just too good to be true. If you're running through PCs every 2.25 years for reasons not tech upgrades related to work or obsessive gaming, I've really gotta ask what you've been doing.

Exactly. People make it sound like they won't be able to play on XP anymore. They're just going to quit supporting it, which they never really did much of in the first place.

I'm sure anybody who wishes to could play FFXI on XP until the last server is taken down.

Yeah..that's the impression I got when I called Square when I saw no xp on Seekers. They're still supporting it if you got it installed as in it'll work. This just shows they won't support problems.

I'm still working on getting my old computer rebuilt but that's 2-3 months down the pike.

This is the year I finally stopped coding websites for I.E.6 and was able to truly enjoy the beauty of PNG files, as much as I loved XP as an OS, I have to agree that it's a move in the right direction.

Now... what to do about all these win 2003 servers...

I upgraded to 7 the second it was released and have never had an issue with XI. Vista, yea that didn't go so great, but there's no reason you can't run the game on 7.

All that dropping support means is if you can't get the game to run, they aren't going to sit there and troubleshoot with you. This is a pretty common practice. I generally recommend everyone upgrading from XP anyway. If you have an app that won't run on it, you can always use the Windows XP mode that is free with the pro version.

I haven't run FFXI on Windows XP since I (stupidly) installed Vista. I had a few problems with Vista, but that was only because it was an unfinished piece of excrement, and I now run it perfectly on Windows 7. Unless I'm running a magical version of Windows 7 which is different from everyone else's I'd say FFXI works pretty damn well on it. A lot of problems are actually caused by newer graphics cards rather than W7.

It runs it without issues 99% of the time.

I get the occasional "Playonline has stopped working" but I got that with 7 too, and it's less than once every two weeks.

I wonder how this will play out three days after the expansion is released and they need to to start patching all the errors and glitch's that'll come with it.

'Required OS'

What is this rubbish? I play XI on XP and Win7 64-bit and see no difference at all, what isn't working "properly" here?

In my job we have fully moved to Windows 7, almost 1000 PCs and laptops - although all new equipment came with W7 since its release.

Pain but it has to be done, Microsoft are fully cutting off XP support next year and more companies are jumping ship.

The only problem I ever had with Vista was that it hates the unofficial windower with a passion that burns hotter then the sun.
