Hi, everyone! Just started playing recently, RDM with BLM support Job on the Odin server. So far I've managed to get the support Job quest done, get a Chocobo license, and grind my main job to level 30 at Gusgen Mines. I'm currently working on getting my support Job to a reasonable level and I'm not sure what to do past that.
The logical thing to do would appear to be doing my starting city's (Windurst) missions to get the airship pass, but I've been having some issues. I've tried grinding for the crystals I need to do the missions, but the weakest enemies I can fight that will drop crystals in the Buburimu Peninsula take ages to defeat and very rarely drop anything. I was hoping that by getting my BLM Job up it will make the process faster without making me strong enough for them to stop dropping crystals at all. So, any input on that would be appreciated. Even just confirmation that I'm doing the right thing.
I've also had issues making money, and even if I'm not at the point where I should be making lots of it, I just really don't know how to go about doing it. I'd at least like to have enough cash flow to buy any items, at all, and not have to save every little bit for new equipment. Just selling the few item drops I get from killing monsters isn't really cutting it.
So, yeah, I'm sure I look like the hugest newbie in the entire world, and I absolutely am, so if anyone could help me out or link me to any tutorials it would be greatly appreciated!

RDM isn't exactly a speed killer, you might have a better time with a damage dealing job as far as speed killing goes.
Selling crystals is a perfectly acceptable way to make money at your level. If you can stand it, fishing moat carps is another way to make money. Beehive chips are another staple that sell quick.
What server are you on? Have you found a linkshell?

One easy way to make some cash early on is to just level a few jobs solo, to collect a decent amount of crystals, which looks like something you would like for mission purposes anyway. Check the auction house for what crystals are selling for a decent amount and at a decent rate (fire, wind and dark are often good) and then target mobs for exp that drop those crystals, making sure you have signet on. Mob species that can be good are orcs (fire), birds (fire), fungaur (dark), and bees can also be an ok target for crystals and beehive chips.
If you are staying near windy, crawlers are also good for silk thread, but are not easily available in large quantities. Also, if you are staying with Windy, you can kill dhalmel in the Canyon or Bubu, and sell their hides and giant femurs at the outpost in Bubu (assuming Windy controls the region) for some decent gil. If you go to the Highlands with either a supply of wind crystals or dark crystals, distilled water, and tea leaves, you can slaughter sheep and synth their skins (check that leathercrafting recipies).
None of these processes are going to make you rich quickly, but they will provide some decent cash at low levels. Whatever course you take when farming, try to focus on items that stack, as you will be able to collect more before heading back to town to either sell on the AH or to an NPC. In addition, since you have limited slots to sell on the AH, if you want cash faster, it is good to target something that sells at a decent rate to NPCs.

Another way is if you've leveled a couple jobs to at least 10-15 outside of gusgen with a signet on you'll have some conquest points. Speak to the npc near the town gates and buy some voiddust with your points. You can maybe get two of them, I'd guess (2k points each). These sell for 25k+ each on my sever and sell fast. It'd be an easy 50k which may seem like a lot to a brand new player.
As for money over time methods that can relied upon, try crafting. Get some fire crystals and snag some copper ores from the Goldsmithing guild and start turning them into ingots, easy profit there. What server are you on? On mine it's easy profit, even if you're paying gil for all the fire crystals to do so (obv. more profit if you willing to farm the crystals).

As I said, I'm on the Odin server. I haven't found a Linkshell yet.
Thanks for all the input so far! I've also been looking at some of the tutorials on the forum and I think I'm starting to get a better understanding of the game.

Looks like on Odin voiddusts sell quickly for 24k average each. Stacks of copper ingots are going for 25-30k each on your server too, and they sell well.
A stack of fire crystals on odin right now is only costing 4k.
Say you need 18 crystals to make a stack of ingots (1 crystal, 4x copper ore each). I accounted for failed synths with some lost materials.
That's 6k for the crystals, and the cost of copper ore from the Goldsmith guild is almost negligible. Assume you spent 7k to make the stack. Selling for 25k on the low end, that's 18k profit per stack you sell.
These can be made well with 0 Goldsmithing skill.
Also, look up any unfamiliar items you find on here: http://www.ffxiah.com

Having finished leveling both of my jobs to 30, I put a few Voiddusts up for sale at the auction house, then made my way to Bastok and started synthesizing stacks of Copper ore, which I put up as well.
If all goes well I should be making a good chunk of money, which would also solve my crystal grinding issue because if I'm not wanting for gil then I can just go to the auction house and buy as many as I need.

While simply buying them will be faster in the short term, if you ever want to target a specific crystal type, then knowing where weather frequently spawns for that element will help. Only exceptions here are Light, Fire, and to a lesser degree, Dark. Can use this site in conjunction with the in-game time to know the date and forecasts for a given region: http://ff11info.com/bazaar/en/weather.php

I think that aside from making money and getting your sub job higher, the best thing you can do (better than missions even) is level up more. It will help with everything including money and missions.

A level 99 even with skills of a level 30 will still farm and get around better than a level 30.

Sounds like a good idea. I was kind of worried that doing too much grinding would eliminate some of the challenge, but I'm sort of a novice to MMOs and I guess considering that this was a game intended to be played with other people (and I've been having trouble finding people that just happen to be on the same mission that I'm on to help me out) that it'd probably work out fine.
I just sold off all of my copper and Voiddust and now I'm sitting on a reasonable chunk of money. I used some of it to buy better gear, and now I'm trying to figure out where to go from here. You should consider leveling Thief to 15 for Treasure Hunter I, while it is not a party sub, it is useful for farming purposes
I wouldn't really dig deep into crafting unless you just wanna continue churning stuff out like ingots. Low level gear isn't going to be much profit, and likely with HQs only.
Only real snag with the rush to leveling will be 70, and depending on your job, Maat could be hell. It'll also likely require 70-appropriate gear with pertinent skills maxed or very close. So, just keep saving, but don't feel compelled to buy some super expensive lowbie item.

Eh, Maat on BST is easy as long as you let your pet take the beating... it is almost worth leveling BST first because it probably has an easier time with all limit breaks than any other job (sub whm for sneak invis where needed)
Also, when you're low skilled, it's the one time the master/pet split in damage is actually super useful - because your pets will always have capped skills - so a good chunk of your damage is operating at full potential.
