Maybe I'm missing something, maybe I just suck, I don't know, but I cannot figure out these skill up charts for skilling up.

I have been using this one: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Skill_Ups:_A_Guide_by_Kyrial

Overall, I just really don't know what the **** I'm doing. I'm a level 99 BST trying to skill up Axe which is at level 295. Right now I'm in Abyssea - Misearuex fighting Gashers, and I'm not sure if it's the mob I should be fighting. I have skill up food but I don't want to waste it if I am fighting the wrong mobs seeing as how they are so expensive. I was originally told Boyhoda Tree until about 300 before moving to Abyssea, but I assumed I was close enough and went to fighting Gashers. I mean, I'm getting skill ups, but painfully slow.

I'm really lost and confused here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

When it comes to skilling up weapons there's only a few things you need to do:

1. Look at what skill you have in the weapon you want to skill up (295 Axe in your case)
2. Check what job level your skill is currently at. You have 295 skill on BST which means your skill is equivalent to you being an 80 BST with capped Axe.
3. Since your skill is capped for 80 BST you want to fiight mobs around 3-5ish levels above you (83-85ish).

When you get 300+ skill you should be eating Montagna, before that, Elshena. Skill ups in Abyssea have always been slow for me until you get to like 85-90 capped skill. I don't know why... maybe it's because the more you kill mobs, the higher level they become, and therefore move out of your skill range? I'm never sure if that's a factor solo since you don't kill very fast and I think you have to in order for their level to rise. Use haste gear/atma if you have it and just whack away. God, I need to do some skill ups myself... ugh.

I know how that is. I've had to work on skillups myself at times when I skipped bad camps on a job.

Anyway, here's some tips:

1. Do you HAVE to skill in aby? No! Grounds of Valor and crabs that are not in aby are also good options. Personally, I tend to stay the 'foo away from aby for skillups, there's other things you can do in there..and it saves stones for those other things.

2. How's your acc? You aren't going to skill it if you can't hit the broadside of a barn; skillups will be a lot slower if you can't hit it in my experience. Make sure you got decent accuracy on gear, if you do you can just use the skillup fewds. That is in cap order(low to high that is): Saltena, Elshena, Montanga, and Maringna.

3. Consider going after the melee skillup ring. I swear, doing that is a good way to skillup in itself, which is prolly Square's little joke there.

I hope that helps. ^^

If you're trying to cap for 99 in Abyssea, the crabs in Grauberg are better because they can level up higher (since it's a Heroes zone)

An Abyssea exp party is actually better than solo in Abyssea for skillups. The mobs are going to stay pretty low level if you're soloing.

Try to join a Colibri or brown bird party in Abyssea Misareax instead. You'll get your merits and no one will mind too much if you're a bit under skilled at first.

Alright, thanks a lot for all the info. I'll try some other crabs outside of Abyssea and I'll keep my eyes open for an EXP party that goes and try that as well.

I have had a very frustrating history with the **** skillup ring in Zeruhn Mines. I want it, as well as the earring, but sometimes I just have Vietnam flashback of that mine shaft and lose it. On two separate occasions I went in on SAM and got 30 merits down in the mines and never saw a ring.

Needless to say it still makes me cry. Haven't even tried for the earring yet.

I capped my blue mage sword, parrying and evasion on detectors in Ugly Range [A], I assume you can the final points of pretty much any combat skill from them, and I know I plan to hit them for shield skill ups on paladin when I'm closer to 400.

I ended up there because I was working on a magian trial, and capping just happened on its own. If I have any piece of advice to give, it's to go that way for skill ups: get them while working on something else at the same time.

The main principles in skilling up weapons are:

* Level first, then skill up. The bigger the gap between your current skill and the cap, the faster you skill up.
* Always try to use the best job for the skill to make the gap as big as pos
* If you can't hit it, you can't skill up on it. Don't start on something too high, you have to go up in steps.
* When you get close to the cap (either from your level, or the mob's level), they slow down. Last year's changes mean that the "mob's level" has a bit more headroom, and that you can now still get 0.4 and 0.5 near cap.
* When in Abyssea, get all the usual buffs, and regen atma. This will let you fight EM/T (for a good gap) without having to pay a lot of attention, so you can watch TV and not be bored.
* Don't gear up for uber damage. The longer you can beat on the same mob, the less often you have to find a new one.
* If you have PDT gear (twilight torque, augmented dark rings, etc.), wear it.
* If you're trying to skill up defensive skills, you need to take hate. The easiest way to do that is to go solo. Don't use blink/utsusemi. Mandies are a good opponent, especially the ones by Flux 5 in Attohwa.
* If it's a 1-hand weapon and you can dual wield, it'll go faster.
* If it's a 2-hand weapon, expect it to take a while. Go for a low delay weapon if you can.

I've been skilling up weapons lately without using the special foods, but by picking the right level mobs. (I also strictly solo, no duct tape 2box white mage crap.)

* When starting out from zero, just about anything goes. I like the orcs out in East Altepa for level 50-ish range.
* Up to about 250-275 in tree, page 5 I think. Crabs and flies.
* Up to about 325-350, Pachypodiums in Tahrongi, they don't link or aggro.
* After that, Bluffalo in Ulgyrange, they go to level 99-100, which is about as high as you can find in aby. You need to have some way to remove virus/paralyze.

Also, I've noticed that there seems to be a "sweet spot" for skill-ups, where below it, even if you can hit reliably, they are slow, then they speed up as you get higher, then they slow down again as you near the cap.

And if you're trying to level shield, you have my sympathy. I just started working on it again (my last non-magic skill still below 300), and I found some notes I put in the wiki talk page on shield skill-ups... four years ago. I got it from 265 to 278 tonight.

Shield? Hah! No sympathy from me! Smiley: tongue

I'm working on Parry (DNC), and dreading the eventual Guard (PUP) skillup process. I may just quietly ignore Guard...

Seriously, though, any specific hints on skilling Parry?

Parry (and guard, shield etc.) just aim for mandies. Chain up as many as you're comfortable with and just chill.

Once it's in the abyssea range, go altepa with -dt / -pdt gear, regen atmas and repeat. Easy peasy. Oh, if you have, sub rdm for phalanx.

If the altepa camp is taken by FC'ers or if more than a few mandies are just hitting you too hard, you can cap skills on the mandies in aby mis coast. They first spawn ep but after you kill a few they start popping dc, and you can pull a lot more of them at the lower level than you can in altepa. I capped shield & parry this way.

If you have WAR, skill up on WAR using retaliation and defender. On mandies you swing a 2-handed weapon like it was a one handed weapon.

I'm also a bst and I agree with the mandies road in abyssea. If you are playing bst then I recommend DNC sub instead of mage sub because you will want dual wielding. Stack yourself with regen and double attack atma. I used mounted champion, stronghold and aoa. Next, stack as much defense and physical damage reduction as you can manage. Finally you can head out to one of the zone.

320 and below, tahrongi abyssea. Pull 2-3 mandies and fight facing them. Use low DMG axes if you have them. Adjust the number of man dies on you such that you won't need to do anything but swing away. You can leave your character there and go watch a movie or something. If your axe DMG is low then it will take awhile. Eat accuracy food if you can not land any hits but I landed most of my hits at skill lv270 so you should be fine. Eat skill up food if you want but I am cheap so in used defense food so I don't have to watch over my character. NOTE: iratham tends to wander around the area so watch out for him.

320 and up. I did mine while doing magian axe. Go to M.Coast Abby with the same setup. I'd only pull 1 or 2 mobs at once as these can hurt more. I did crabs but mandies or appkalu will do also. Skill up food will help a lot here as I got a lot of slow down compare to the previous levels. Also you will miss a bit if you have less than 300 skill.

380+ I think you can now just join the abyssea alliance and get more exp.

Guard is easy after the patch a few months ago. I stopped at 300 on Hannequets in Attowha after about 4-6 hours in aby because it was going so fast and I'm trying to get everything I can to at least 300.

Parry is easy after that patch too. Just try skilling up a weapon that qualifies for it (Sword, Dagger, Club, many others), especially a 2H. I capped it after doing Katana then got GK to 380.

Before you level Guard, don't bother levelling Guard. Most useless, least proccing skill in the **** game. Seriously... do something else. Anything else.
