Best job for soloing/low manning pre-Abyssea content Follow

Hi, I'm on spring vacation so I decided I'd try going back to this while I wait for XIV, if it ever gets off the ground.

My main motivation for coming back is nostalgia and wanting to go back and finish my nation, Zilart, CoP, Aht Urhgan and WoTG missions that I never managed to when I played in the past due to difficulty in finding parties for them due to my time zone back then. Now the level cap is 99 I'm hoping I can hopefully hit it and solo/duo most of the old missions, but when I left my only level 75 job was WHM, so I'm thinking of levelling a new job from scratch to 99 for this purpose (on the same character).

Since I'm not sure what jobs are like at 99, could anyone suggest which job I level to solo as many of the old missions as possible?

(PS. I'm on Phoenix server if anyone wants to join)

BST would make most things a joke. Jugs shred through lower level mobs like wood through a wood chipper.

Hmm, maybe I'll try BST then. What about typical melee DD like DRK? I guess probably anything with reasonable DD output would be good..

BST dominates most 75-cap content due to the way level correction works for mobs (i.e. skewed heavily in the lv99 pet's favor), so yeah, that's probably the best way to go. Pet also has far better survivability than we do; for the most part players are still fragile to a lot of things. Like, it wouldn't surprise me if most old mission-related BLM mobs such as the orc in the house at the center of Davoi will probably still be able to knock out 1/3-1/2 of a player's HP with a single nuke, but a lv99 BST pet will probably not even take 3-digit damage from it.

BST it is then. You can use jug pets in instanced fights too, right?

Oh god, 12 hour update... despite being on a 74Mbps connection. It's like I'm back in 2004.

That doesn't work if you're in a 10 minute time limit BC like the 95 cap fight.

If you haven't beaten him in 5 minutes of fighting it's probably because you wiped anyway

OK, I just got my BST to 20 solo. From here do I keep soloing or go to Gusgen and look for a GoV group/alliance? If the latter, what is my role in groups (including Abyssea ones) as a BST? (Sorry this is the first time I've played this job...)

Right now I'm running as BST/WHM for the cures while soloing which seems to work for now. I heard /DNC is best later though?

Can join the book burn to level faster, obviously. I personally had more fun, and an easier time, soloing on my Bst after 75. As for a role its easy, if you don't heal, nuke or support (brd) then deal damage. In Aby same, deal damage and have your pet deal damage/tank. Bst is not invited to events much, so you will solo or low man things with friends.

/Dnc is nice. You lose some things from /whm but at higher levels your pet should be tanking and at times(99%) soloing.

The BST method relies on having the BST tank him while you whittle him down before using the tail, if you only have one tail.

Before the tail was implemented, a multi BST strategy relied on people sacrificing pets and using CB for a fresh tank midway. That's how everyone in my LS got through since we didn't have four people with MNK and a spare Alex SMN (but we had five BSTs!)

Anyway, most BSTs learned the hard way to not waste a jug outside of the BC since it's money down the drain.

Am I understanding it right that charm isn't really used in groups, just jug pets?

Hmm, soloing after 75... does that mean it takes a long time to get to 99 compared to levelling in alliances? Or is Abyssea XP great even when you solo?

Correct. The jug pets available at 99 are very good, and there often isn't anything comparable to charm. Jug pets will never turn on you like a charmed pet will, and they can have special job attributes (high evasion, high defense, treasure hunter, water resistance, etc) that make certain ones well suited for specific content.

I'm not even a BST main and yet I have a stack of Lucky Broths (Faithful Falcorr) in my inventory.... just in case.

Charm can be used but better off having a jug pet imo. When sync is removed or reset, it happens in CN if you are there long enough, then a charmed pet wont stay and you may not be able to re-charm if your level is now to low. I had that issue in Gusgen charming the funguar.

I solo'd alot after 75, did a few Bost. parties. With pages you will get experience faster with a group. Little exp per mob but the page makes up for that. Abyssea exp is great when you build the right lights. Golden, Azure, Pearl and another I can't remember right now tend to be what people want built up.

Personally I like Pup and I have soloed most of the content I have completed. Pup is easy once you get the hang of it but the downside to starting from scratch is the price tag of some of the attachments. At 99 I solo a lot of Abby content. To me it's more fun to be able to switch automatons and customize them. Bst is good but so is Pup. Pup is not really used by a lot of the general population so there are a lot of misconceptions on what it can do. I still get people that are surprised to see me soloing some of the Abby NM's. I just wanted to throw that out there.

Darth is right. Pup is another great job. Plays on the same server and is absolutely right. I was one of the people going wtf as he solo'd a zone boss.

There is only one place you might use charm: Gusgen Mines when your group is sync'ed at or above the level of the Funguars and you can grab one. They aren't very effective though and are more a liability when they uncharm.

By the time you're leveling BST you should be well enough established to Abyssea it up. You're leveling BST because you want to be a competent and efficient player by doing your own content, there is no excuse to be limping along in a Nest GoV party and other such nonsense. Once you're 99 there is no content that could plausibly offer a charmable pet, and charmed pets don't let you use Snarl either, which is a major mechanic in BST being so strong these days.

I would actually suggest soloing until crawler's nest, since you can't use jugs at most levels in gusgen and charming the funguars is crap. Also, unlike a lot of jobs, soloing on BST won't slow you down a terrific amount. Getting to 35 solo is easy as pie.

Duoing is even better. I duoed my bst before GoV got really rolling and it was obviously slower than alliance leveling, but it still went pretty quick.

I say "Why go to CN when you could go straight to Abyssea?"

Will people invite me at this level?

I'm not sure how to look for an alliance... I just started the Abyssea quest for now.

You can go to Abyssea @ 30... but you'll have to pay 500k - 1 mil to leech exp from an alliance. It's not really an option for many any more since, in the old days, you got your gil back through Cruor, but that's no longer the case.

Edit: Cruor is currency obtained in Abyssea, btw. You used to be able to use it to buy items called Chocobo Blinkers and sell them to NPCs for a lot of gil; SE nerfed it.
