RL, FFXI and a small but important requestFollow

Hello FFXI people.

First off, this isn't Shade, it is her husband. While I have played as Shade on occasion (and yes, I did have fun once I figured out all the F keys), she is the one that just absolutely loves this game and was the one behind the keyboard the vast majority of the time. She would sit there and research different enemies and areas, make notes then log on to test her efforts. She really had a mission. And she would sit here and talk with me of the good folks she met and played with just like they were friends up the street. She really loves FFXI. And you know the saying, if she's happy everyone's happy. I was more than willing to tolerate because God knows she put up with me.

She's in trouble right now and we're asking for help. Those of you that know her in the game have probably noticed that she hasn't been logged on for quite some time now. I can tell you she misses all of you and the camaraderie, but she has bigger problems right now.

She went in for what we thought was gall stones and our lives changed. After being taken by ambulance from here in the Florida keys to Baptist hospital in Miami and spending a week there, we found out that she has inoperable pancreatic cancer so advanced that her liver is also seriously affected. There's more stemming from this, but that's enough. Since then trips to oncologists and ER and resting between has been her routine. Her current prognosis is not good, so we are asking this of everyone we know, and that extends to you.

If you believe in God, (or a higher being of your choice), would you please include her in your prayers. If you do not, please think of her with positive thoughts. Her RL name is Cindy. We can surely use all the help we can get.

She also asked that each and everyone of you get an annual checkup irregardless of how you are feeling. She was the epitome of health at 56 years old(yes, we are both really old school gamers, we met back in the days where pinball was the game of choice). She ate right, fast walked 5 miles practically every morning, did her wii Fit and hasn't had even so much as a cold in 3-4 years. Literally she was in perfect health (other than being almost totally deaf) felt great and had not a clue of what was happening inside her. A delay of one of her checkups by several months resulted in this not being caught when there were still options for treatment. The doctors think she has had this for about a year.
Please don't let it happen to you, life is truly fragile and precious.
Thank you all.

PS, She wanted to say hi Mrs. Catwho

Oh no..right now I'm kinda in a family crisis myself. I haven't mentioned this other than asking for some funny anime on bg but..

My mom also might have colon cancer but the hospital has been giving us the runaround; if they recommend surgery today she's switching to another hospital. I'll add your wife to my prayers however.

Also for those that aren't religious, consider buying a cancer bracelet. or sending virtual hugs. I've been considering buying a cancer support bracelet (even tho I AM religious) since the doctors at Douglas General chose to scare the crap out of Mom and my brothers by saying, "It's cancer, and this is fatal" even tho they hadn't done the biopsy yet. Since I knit, I made her a cancer cap out of cotton yarn; the pattern's "Waves of Hope".

Let her know Laverda (Martyn in RL) is thinking of her.

Some of my best times in FFXI have been doing events with Shade. Her research, her knowledge, her ability to think on her feet, she's a member of that rare club of people who command absolute respect. An event with Shade along always goes well. She's a true delight to play with.

She's also one of the very few FFXI players who are older than I am -- but only barely. I just turned 55.

Give Shade my best regards and lots of hugs. I will keep her in my prayers.

Thank you for letting us know - Shade is beloved by many. I'll pass the word along to others in game.

Shade was one of those people that I used to log on for everyday. No event was truly an event until she logged on. Cancer is a terrible thing. My mom is currently recovering from breast cancer for the second time. Tell her that Kenny says hi.

My thoughts go out to you, her, and your family, as well as to you and your family Mary through these tough times.

:(

We don't know each other, but I used to see her post around the forums a lot. It's a tragic thought, even being from the same community.

I will be taking your advice to heart. My dad died a few years ago at the age of 52 from cancer, and my grandpa on my dads side also died from a similar type of cancer. I'll try not to be too paranoid once I hit 45+, but I will definitely get annual check-ups.

Best wishes to the both of you

Prayers and positive energy on the way. I don't know Shade but something like this transcends all other matters. Likewise for you Mary. On a positive note it strengthens my spirit to see the willingness of the community to honor this small but important request. Hopefully all those affected can find some comfort in that fact that so many people care about the outcome. Hopefully next time you post it will be to tell us some good news.

My oldest sister has been going through a cancer bout of her own. When it initially started causing problems, nobody could find anything wrong. It just happened to be a nurse that worked at her husband's mine looking over various results that the actual cause was pinned to a form of brain cancer. She's had a couple small operations and went through a round of chemo late last year, and we're basically in wait and see mode now. But basically the doctor who worked on her was surprised she'd survived and there are still a-hole docs here who won't see her whenever she has an issue, usually resulting in a 2 hour drive to Pittsburgh.

Stupid medical system is bad enough between costs and insurances, nevermind adding bad/lazy doctors to the mix.

I'm not a regular here in the forums and rarely post, but I'll lurk every few months or so.

However, ya couldn't stop me from posting my prayers on this thread to Cindy, who also shares my sister's name. I really hope you get better and I send all of my condolences and prayers to both you and Shade.

God bless.

I wish her and you all the best. Don't take that bad prognosis to heart, because they can certainly be proven wrong. I hope it will be and she'll be with you for a long time to come.

Not to sidetrack, but your post makes me wonder what sorts of things might be going on with all the folks I've known who've vanished from the game over the years. I'm sure they're probably all fine, but it does make me think.

I hope she's doing better not only physically but, mentally. Stress can take a toll on the heart and mind. So please take a breather, relax, spend time with those most important to you.

Get well soon!
